I built big 78" long ladder bars for me 57 Chevy and want them two tone, blue and yellow. I see in your video you do the orange over the chrome and it looks great. • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The goal of the partial cure is to allow the next coating to adhere. I think I did about a 50% cure on that orange cant remember for sure. Then we did the full cure schedule on the clear. Clear is tricky as too much and it browns, not enough it can crack.

    I’m doing 20 inch chrome rims that are bubbling and a few places. What is the best way to get the chrome off. I’m a small shop and only have a harbor freight 40lbs pressure pot and 40gallons of rim (chem) strip. I’m never had to take chrome off so not sure how hard or easy to be able to give an estimate on price. How do you deal with chrome rims that have bad chrome?

    • @livinthe5thsun79
      @livinthe5thsun79 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta sandblast. Usually on chrome you would just want a surface blast so powder can bite on to n not go past nickle plating which is under the chrome plating. Sandblast all the way down can take some time, but if u wana save those rims its worth it. I had a set once that I hot flocked a ton of primer on the problem areas n sanded, feathered until high edges were flush applied an extra pass or two n rims came out sweet. Powder coating is all trial and error. At the end science will always win in powder coating. The orange peel u see in this chrome is all just the science part if coating. Sometimes no matter how good you are situations will rise thst we coaters have no control over.

    • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a fine line in my opinion. I like to coat to about 80 to 90 percent on chrome and polished alum. Leaving that last 20 ish percent allows the clear to still bond to the under coat.

    I have a very important question that needs to be answered. @9:34 when you say you'll do a partial bake on the orange, which is part of the 2 tone, why do you jot fully cure it and do so for every tone you apply? What is the purpose of "partial cure" do you mean you only cure the part for 25-50% of the cure duration after flow out? I need to understand this, no powder coater will explain this when they say to do it, including you, Dan! Thanks you for all you do, Dan. I would really appreciate an answer, this information has been missing. If i do a 3 tone rim in the future, I need to know if you should full cure or "partial cure" (plus how partial, 25, 50, or 75% of full cure) for every stage: the primer, 1st tone, 2nd tone, 3rd tone and the clear coat. (Well, i know you fully cure the clear coat but the problem is i don't know the answer to that concern for all the rest of the layers + the primer too.
    Thank you!!

      You need to read the data sheet on the powder.....like chrome has to be a full cure before clear. The reason you do partial cure is to make sure the layers on top of it bond to it. If you do full cure then the next layer will not fully bond and could delaminate. But as said chrome has to be fully cured or it will react and get wavy and pull apart....yes it could delaminate also down the road....but its the fun game we play as powder coaters.

      @@RightNowPowderCoating Hey Dan, thank you and that makes sense. I also apologize, i read my question and it was very confusingly worded🙄 so my bad on that. But otherwise, i also found an article or two that explained precisely what you just said, how the powder needs to partially cure before its topcoat. And infact, you need to partially cure each layer prior to the fully cured final topcoat (with the exception of chrome which always needs a full cure).

    If the roughness of the wheels were an issue for the owner - how would you deal with it?

    • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its more about setting up the expectation before coating it. Usually if you say hey this is rough, its going to translate in a orange peel look they will either say thats fine or not do it...then its not on you.

      Casting in the wheel, only way to get rid ofnit would be to sand them down

    Do you ever run into the chrome looking more like polished aluminum after clear coat applied and baked ? I'm currently experiencing that with using Chroma Chrome . Or should I try a different manufacturer ?

      Nope, no need to try others, it's always going to ruin the look. Powder technology is just not there yet.

      @@RightNowPowderCoating Thanks good to know. So far I've only used powder from Columbia coatings and was wondering if it was just theirs or not. Reason for using their powder is because they have free shipping for over $50 which as you know is very easy to do. I'm not quite there yet to need 55 pound bulk lol

    Looks amazing, the vaccum thing was really smart instead of using this god damn tape that can withstand the heat but wont stick at all.
    How much did you charge for these? Im a powder coater myself and I dont see any kind of profit in this. judging by time. I just did 3 pairs of wheels today and alot of other industrial stuff. (Flex)
    Where I work we have these rails in the roof with metal bars (which we call carts) with wheels on them, hanging in these rails. So I hang 4 wheels in a row, kind of a squeeze with 20 inch wheels but whatever. so once I'm done painting I just use a bent rebar to push the the cart inside the oven. and start putting up more stuff that needs some powder. we have 3 rails next to eachother so I cant fit 12 wheels at the same time in the oven if I wanted. And the rails goes all the way through the oven aswell. so they come out the other side once their done. so once the oven is full of stuff you just go around and start packaging the stuff that now has cooled down.
    Godd work again!

      @@RightNowPowderCoating Then I guess you made a few bucks :D Im from sweden and Im 20 years of age. I've worked with powder 1,5 years ish now. We usually do 300 for 4 wheels. but then again, we do so much more than just wheels which is why I love what I do.
      last week for example, I painted the basked from a skylift, It was a bit tricky I might say.
      We paint trucks, cars and any kind of industrial work you could imagine. so space is limited. Then they throw shit at me and say "coat this" xD
      sometimes I get to powder coat 1 thing for the day, some kind of super thick metal shit that we just put in the oven for the day to make sure it gets hot all the way through the material.
      Found you youtube when searching for like different techniques for coating, really loving the content
