I just read a story about Blockbuster, they still have around 80 stores left. Mainly Alaska and a couple of others. Places where streaming services are still not good enough or have an older customer base.
Also, I've found to ALWAYS keep my expectations low. I always want to be entertained and hopefully it will be a good movie, but that's easier said than done with the way Hollywood is in it only for the cash grab and in the process destroys the material it's based on, not to mention the way they believe they have the right to change things around just because they fund the production. I've taken to watch a lot of older 80's and 90's movies I missed or haven't seen in YEARS but as you say you have to have fun with them because let's face it, we have WAY better CG and production value in general nowadays (almost always, but not every single time) and if you go into these older movies with today's production values in mind you most certainly will be disappointed and maybe even turn away from a movie that you otherwise would've liked.
despite what many might think, movies like this are not good choices for drinking games as livers unless upgraded to industrial strength are not capable of withstanding such recreational punishment and will explode before the third act...
I watched it on New Years Eve with my 4 year old son, and he was so hyped to stay up til midnight to watch it. It was the best time ever. Then, I took my sister to see it at Rifftrax Live. Great times!
You're awesome ! I'm having so much fun watching your reviews of these bad movies. I feel like I'm watching them without wasting my time. Plus the background info you give for each movie is just great. Good job!!!
Thanks! Sharktopus was Roger Corman's group, which is kind of funny to see them getting in on the Asylum's action since the Asylum is sort of a modern Corman. I think if you gave The Asylum 250 million they would make 250 movies. Red Planet is great! Definitely doing it at some point.
Borrowing lines from Twisted and Sharknado: Person1: we have sharks! Person2: we have another shark! Person1: Actually I think that might have been the same one.
I loved this movie. Every time I thoroughly enjoy a movie like this, I think how silly it is that the big production companies don't start small, independent studios to focus on making these kind of movies (and using their contractual obligations to get bigger name stars to at least do a cameo in them - yes they'd have to pay them more than the entire budget, in some cases, but with the right up and coming star, they'd get enough extra viewers for the name alone to make it worth while). But then I realize studios like this one thrive precisely because they aren't tied to a major studio. The rot that is eating the big studios from the inside out is precisely why they're failing and going bankrupt all the time, and studios like this (and Full Moon before them) thrive so well and don't fail until they actually start trying to be something they're not - namely, the big budget studios.
This really was so bad it was good. Believe the hype. This movie is so bad on so many levels: bad acting, scene chewing, bad CGI, impractical situations, it's a logic and physics free movie, and fails as a movie on all accounts. But somehow, it worked, to make a pretty damn entertaining film. This is the new The Room.
I would argue that most of the movie is bad because it's boring. There's about 90 seconds of genuinely good stuff in that movie. On an unrelated note, most trailers are 90 seconds long. Go figure.
Oh yeah bad movies exist, I just like to focus on movies I enjoy. Some examples of movies I hate are Juno, The Hangover, Transformers 2, Battlefield Earth, Epic Movie, The Hillz, and the Total Recall remake. Its hard to give it a rating since it is something like Birdemic where it is just funny/bad. I wouldn't recommend it like I would, say, the original Oldboy which is brilliant. Essentially, it comes down more to if you like this sort of film (intentionally bad) then you will like it.
I can't stop watching your reviews! Hell of an ability to do a 5 min resume of a 80+ min movie! Way to put in a joke in a blooper and i still don't think you're insulting the movie. Can't wait to see your take on Maximun Overdrive. One of my all time favorites with a awesome AC/DC soundtrack. Keep up the good work!
I think it was Tara Reid going around shortly before the film came out saying she was going to have to be more choosy in her scripts. (basically bad mouthing the movie) After the film was a big hit they told her to hit the bricks. I'm sure everyone else will be happy to collect that nice paycheck.
Dozerfleet Studios I'm going to guess and say that you don't like "The Walking Dead" since you didn't mention it. And it's like the number 1 show about zombies.
I still have to see Sharknado II and the sequels. This first one is great though. It's intentially BAD and it shows, and yet you just have to laugh at it. Everything is so silly, so over-the-top, so ridiculous and yet the fans can't get enough =) Must be awesome to star in a movie like this. Acting? Nah, just looks somewhat bad-ass with a chainsaw and you're good to go ;)
2012 zombie apocalypse is actually quite good. If they had more money for the effects it would have been a much better known zombie film. 2 headed shark attack was a lot of fun. A silly story and a decent amount of gratuitous nudity. Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid were lots of fun. Their version of Sherlock Holmes is a blast.
You can't deny the audience for it. If no one watched these then they wouldn't get made. There is something for an intentionally bad film. Although, they have a fine line to skirt. Sometimes they go for intentionally bad and end up being unintentionally horrible.
Hate it or Love it... it lead to Piranhas tornadoes in telephone network commercials and even "Zomnados" in Z-Nation... one of the best scenes in the whole series. "Anythingnados" are here to stay and there is something just fun and cool about bad movies... ask the Killer Tomato fans.
I saw both the Asylum and the "real" versions of Sherlock Holmes and I honestly agree that the Asylum version is better: neither come close to doing the source material justice, but at least it was made interesting and fun by the addition of robot dinosaurs.
It wasn't so much that I was ignoring 1941, I was just going for the joke about how people complained that in Prometheus, they could have ran left or right instead of straight and getting crushed.
The dude that gets crushed by the Hollywood sign is the voice of Michelangelo in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies!!!!! I think he was on the Brady Bunch too...
Especially when studios are doing real misleading stuff, like making trailers that completely misrepresent what the movie is. That is flat out lying to the audience but it is ok because they are the ones with all the money.
Blowing up tornado's was already featured in Yoko Tsuno (a Belgian-French comic that features aliens and fringe science). They blow up a tornado with both some sort of thermobaric bomb and a nuke.
Hell, all of the sharknado and lavalantula movies are just plain campy fun. These flix are the textbook definition of "amusement" - don't think, just watch and laugh.
I may not enjoy everything the asylum puts out, but I am glad you brought up that very important point.... Big name studios copy each other all the time!!! Why give the asylum crap when their doing the same thing... I still can't tell the difference between all those volcano movies, Dantes peak etc.
I love how in the middle of so much absurdity, the director look at the helicopter scene and goes like "Nah guys, it's 8 people, there's no way the heli would be able to fly" I swear that this whole script based on "What are the things that absolutely could not happen?" I love it! ps; Poor John Heard man, but ncanootow i can't wait to watch Kevin being Home Alone and Orphan now
5:08 Use Boll said she was a miscast for his action horror film: Alone In The Dark. He also said he did like her in comedic roles. Asylum Pictures used her in their Princess of Mars they made after Avatar and before John Carter
The crash-course on The Asylum was excellent. I have often wished their silly movies had better special effects. Now I understand why they don't. There's no profit in it. Fair enough!
I totally must watch that Asylum Sherlock Holmes. It really looks promising. Sharknado may not be artistic, but it's most likely the best movie night flick ever. It's much more fun than any comedy. Or make it a "A shark ate someone" drinking game. But do that on your own risk.

That hippie bus driver that got killed by the Hollywood sign is played by Robbie Rist, who is best remembered for playing cousin Oliver in the final six episodes of The Brady Bunch. Robbie Rist also wrote every song that appeared in the movie.
Just discovered your channel thanks to Reddit and I love it. I love your positive spin on a few terrible movies and ones that I may have just wanted to more about. But I wanted to point out here that having worked for 2 rental companies in the past you wouldn't be surprised how many people thought Sherlock Holmes was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and how many times I had to direct them in the right direction. But also how many associates also put the movie in the wrong location. It was as if they couldn't read the disc and tell the difference between the writing on the disc always drove me nuts as a video associate. But again great channel I have been watching like crazy.
+TheGirlWithTheMonsterMovieTattoos Thanks! Oh I believe it. I think I mentioned it in my Jack Frost video where people were renting the horror version thinking it was the Micheal Keaton family one. Audiences aren't always the brightest and that's why The Asylum has been able to flourish. Glad you are enjoying the videos! Reddit has been a mixed blessing. I get a lot of traffic from them but also a lot of people telling me I have no idea what I'm talking about lol
So far only one of your reviews I went... ehhhh nope.... lol but I love your point and history on movies and it makes me feel less of outcast about movies most would say are terrible.
+TheGirlWithTheMonsterMovieTattoos some of my older stuff is...not my best because I was still figuring things out back then. Been doing this for about 5 years now but really only got serious with it about 2 years ago. The old stuff is still worth watching but there are some I admit are meh.
i thought a mention of rifftrax would've been appropiate. the guys doing mystery science theater 3000 had a lot of fun with this one. even made a live version. Freaking Hilarious!!!
While I don't agree with you on all of your reviews, I really do appreciate your stance on bad movies. I feel like you really know your stuff and make an educated opinion on the movies you watch. Keep it up!
For some reason I remember there being a buzz for this movie just because of how bad it was, and people were kinda hyped to see just how ridiculous it was. I even remember there being a countdown timer when it aired on the SyFy channel.
You should totally review their version of Sherlock Holmes. To me, it's up there with The Asylum's best, alongside Battle of Los Angeles and of course Sharknado. Can't go wrong with Sherlock Holmes in a hot air balloon fighting a fire-breathing mechanical dragon being driven by his brother, Iron Man, while Watson goes to stop Iron Man's android assistant from blowing up Buckingham Palace. That right there, is cinematic gold. :D Great review as always, Cecil!
Technically if a bombs is powerful enough it can disrupt the air flow and in a sense take out the tornado however the helicopter would have trouble getting that close and the bomb may only have an affect depending on its strength an the tornado's
My son loves sharks… I was tired of spongebob.. we watched sharknado… I loved it. Very fun. Just what I’ve been looking for. I love that John Heard RIP my mom met him when she was younger. She said it was the nicest guy. She was with a bunch of friends and he told them. He gave them some fatherly advice.. You knew that was cousin Oliver
I personally found myself playing it more for the quirky sarcasm filled british humor more than the gameplay, because it could've been better than just an MDK-like game. But if there is one game that needs a sequel so they can improve upon and get it the respect that it deserves, it's Armed & Dangerous.
Yeah I never understood why critics that new they already hated a film would watch it 2 review it that's pointless to rate a film you know you're going to give a badd raiting to it even if you like it!
I have seen ALL of the Sharknado Films and think they are all alot of fun, break out the Beer and Pretzels, sit back and enjoy the ride!!! We also came up with a good drinking game ....every time a shark eats someone ---- Take a drink.
I thought that the story behind the whole Blockbuster/Asylum thing was actually that Blockbuster corporate was ordering movies and mistook "War of the Worlds" for "H.G.Wells War of the Worlds" and after they received the shipment only then realized they had made a mistake? But that it was simply a mistake in the order? That's the info I heard in another YT video, forgot the channel.
I loved all 4 Sharknado movies. I love all the crazy Syfy killer doubleheaded creature fight flicks, too. The whole point is to check your brain at the door and just laugh :)
Yor commentary is very interesting on this one. Especially where you talk about how there are now "knock off" movies for every "big" budget blockbuster movie. And how producers use the alphabet to name titles based on how people search for movies...
Since I'm not a movie critic and I don't take any movies seriously, I take them for entertainment value, as all movies are just fantasy, ("lights, Camera, Action) and I watch flicks to escape reality, I sometimes prefer movies like this that don't take flicks seriously either, Rock on Asylum
Fun review as always Cecil a few people at my job told good things about this silly little flick I'll give it a shot. BTW I'm sure if you know that ''The New Arsenio Hall Show'' did a tiny skit of ''Sharknado''with Tara Raid making a cameo did you see it? The only from Asylum I really enjoyed was ''I Am Omega'' only because I really enjoyed Mark Dacascos performance in it did you ever catch that one?
I do not know why people keep hiring Tara Reid. There is ample evidence she cannot act and is mildly stupid. There is also zero evidence she draws crowds, so she doesn't qualify as eye-candy or boost sales.
Sure man, whatever your preference is. I was thinking more along the lines of making a video asking what questions everyone has for you, they can submit them in the comment section or your emails by a certain date. Then make a video response to all of the best or most requested. You could even include stills if you want.
You know the funniest thing is, This isn't the first time the Actor who played Fin dealt with Weird oddities of Nature, Since he used to be the Adoptive Father of a Radioactive Mutant Fire-Breathing Iguana in the Godzilla the Series from the 90s
Opening's CGI is better than Sharknado's actual, legit CGI.
Mister Spazzles hehe it probably took longer too
GoodBadFlicks - makes every movie look good
Also 17:08 When burned, apply water.
Thrano :)
The weird thing is that Blockbuster has almost disappeared but The Asylum keeps on being successful.
"Almost"?
Not really. It's much easier for a low budget production company to switch to smartTV than it is for a large brick and mortar rental business.
I just read a story about Blockbuster, they still have around 80 stores left. Mainly Alaska and a couple of others. Places where streaming services are still not good enough or have an older customer base.
@ Brian the ironic part being that those stores were probably the lowest on Blockbusters priorites list 10-15 years ago.
the funny part is, Alaska is the rape capital of the USA.
I've found that if you don't take movies like this seriously, you enjoy them more.
have you also found water to be wet?... or is that still a discovery to be made yet?
Also, I've found to ALWAYS keep my expectations low. I always want to be entertained and hopefully it will be a good movie, but that's easier said than done with the way Hollywood is in it only for the cash grab and in the process destroys the material it's based on, not to mention the way they believe they have the right to change things around just because they fund the production. I don't take any movie seriously... because, you know, they're movies.
despite what many might think, movies like this are not good choices for drinking games as livers unless upgraded to industrial strength are not capable of withstanding such recreational punishment and will explode before the third act...
Possibly. I don't want to do too many Asylum movies too close together
could you possibly do FINAL EXAM, SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, STEPFATHER 2 or 3...love your videos btw :)
"I think she hangs up pictures of herself so she knows she's in the right house."
F@cking love it.

brycepunk1 Ha! Yeah, cracked at that.
Possibly a desperate attempt to convince the audience that she really lives there…

I'm surprised they haven't done an X-men mockbuster yet.
Thanks! I had lots of fun on the shows.
That pool scene...Michael Bay would be so proud.
*needed to be both in slow motion and in bullet time perspective*
Had some problems with it so I'm delaying it for now. I'm looking at a November window for it.

This is actually better than watching the movie! Takes less time and is just as entertaining :D
lol thanks!
Sharkcano with lava sharks sounds awesome!
They already made Sharknado part of a shared universe. Ever hear of Lavalantula? And the sequel: 2 Lava 2 Lantula!
And it's also part of the same universe as the TV show "Z-Nation".
Now I have to watch that. I enjoy iZombie.
Dozerfleet Studios I'm going to guess and say that you don't like "The Walking Dead" since you didn't mention it. And it's like the number 1 show about zombies.
Clayton Luce : I've only seen one season of it so far.
I still have to see Sharknado II and the sequels. This first one is great though. It's intentially BAD and it shows, and yet you just have to laugh at it. Very true. People complain a lot about SyFy but honestly they're doing a great job keeping us entertained.
Well I'm glad some of you are happy with syfy
I really need to do more Larry Cohen. Q just was released on Blu...

Ghost Shark looked hilarious. I have it Tivo'd, I haven't seen it yet. (just a few clips)
"Still more believable than Twister"
Ow. I saw that movie four times in the theater.
We really need a Sharknado 3 review. The final act is amazing.
I saw both the Asylum and the "real" versions of Sherlock Holmes and I honestly agree that the Asylum version is better: neither come close to doing the source material justice, but at least it was made interesting and fun by the addition of robot dinosaurs.
I would very much like to see a serious Sherlock Holmes movie.
You had me at "fire-breathing pterodactyl" :|
Same holds true for Battleship and its mockbuster. The Asylum one is better, overall, despite the much lower production values.
Man i love the originality of your show and how you you inform me and keep me rolling on the floor at the same time.very few can pull that off.
While I like some of the Asylum movies, Troma is on a whole other level. I like some Asylum flicks but I love Troma.
Thanks!
Their Sherlock was quite good. One of their best. I'll probably do it next year. (the rest of this year is just about locked)
It wasn't so much that I was ignoring 1941, I was just going for the joke about how people complained that in Prometheus, they could have ran left or right instead of straight and getting crushed.

They actually do address it and call them water spouts...however, Sharkspout just doesn't have the same ring

this:
I love bad movies. I hate The Asylum and movies like Sharknado. Why?
Because I'm not stupid. What makes a bad movie a good bad movie is that
while watching it, you realize that someone tried to make a genuinely
good movie or thought he had a good idea, and seeing it fail miserably
at that on the screen. It's simply fun to see people fail miserably
while trying their best. Because of that, bad movies that are actually
good bad movies always have unintentionally hilarous scenes. What the
Asylum does is making intentionally bad movies. They are tailored to be
bad, and there' nothing genuine about them. They are as sleazy as a
perfectly marketed big-budget movie with no substance. I'm not here to

I'm just watching all of it but it seems like you really found your footing!
this video is the reason I found and loved goodbadflicks, no one else on yt seems to want to egmit they like b movies, gotta respect that
i thought a mention of rifftrax would've been appropiate. the guys doing mystery science theater 3000 had a lot of fun with this one. even made a live version. Freaking Hilarious!!!
I love Rifftrax but this video was made a year before they did the Sharknado live show.
its fun and a good movie to just kick back with some friends and laugh
Best movie ever, best commentary ever, best industry business analysis ever
I will get to the others but I want to space out the Asylum stuff
While I don't agree with you on all of your reviews, I really do appreciate your stance on bad movies. I feel like you really know your stuff and make an educated opinion on the movies you watch. Keep it up!
Yes it is!
Fun fact mr. Touchey feeley around 1:50 was a fairly important role towards the first season of the sopranos. Wonder how he got here.
Sharks has no hands or feet but accurate af dammit 🦈
The worst thing about this film is that tara reid survives.
When i first seen this i shut my brain off for 2 hours and just enjoyed it, not thinking about anything and just laughing at the ridiculousness of it.
You still need a SAG card. If you live in CA you probably have a good shot at being an extra or something.
Thanks! I just saw Battledogs pop on Netflix instant, I'll have to put it on the queue
I loved all 4 Sharknado movies. I love all the crazy Syfy killer doubleheaded creature fight flicks, too. The whole point is to check your brain at the door and just laugh :)
Oh they understand a lot of people get the movies just to mock them, thats all part of the fun!
Thanks! lol
I wish that game sold better it was so good
Yor commentary is very interesting on this one.
Thanks!
“The group decides they’re going to make a stand and fight the sharknados.” This was the moment I decided that desperately need to see this movie.
