Khim is a Thai stringed musical instrument. It was actually called a “Yangqin”, in the original Chinese with a Chinese character “洋 , pronounced as “Yang”, stringed instrument. Khim is also a borrowed word from the Chinese Fujian dialect or 琴 pronounced as "Qín" in Mandarin. When Qin was brought to Thailand, the sound of “Qin” was transmitted orally from one generation to the next until it was distorted into ‘Khim’ (I’m not certain on this point.) Khim is known among European countries as a “hammered dulcimer or Cimbalom” and in India as a “Santur”. Though Khim was originated from Chinese orchestra, its sound is not similar to Yangqin since Khim’s tuning system has been adapted to the sound of Khui Peang-Or (the name of a traditional Thai flute) in order to produce bight pleasing sounds to Thai people’s ears.
