I actually really like Ursula just wanting to rule the ocean cause she wants to. I wasn’t left ‘scratching my head’. The backstory is interesting, but I don’t think it feels like anything is missing from the film. Similar to Maleficent in the original Sleeping Beauty, I enjoy how this villain’s motive is just being evil because they like it.
The fact is in my opinion when a villain has a motivation for ruling something something whenever telling their backstory can be interesting but when comes to storytelling in entertainment media is up to the executive producer and director’s decision and it can be considered to be a long movie to watch like Avengers: Infinity War. Besides, we need the battle of good and evil to go on and sometimes the good kills the evil that makes them no better than they were unless their too evil to rule then better might as well do it.
I once had the theory that the powerful and dangerous Sorceress, whose Triton has sealed in the cave, is the mother of Ursula and there also is an ongoing war in the Sargasso Sea between the Merpeople and Octopans. But since so many Ariel fans have told me so many times that the TV-series and second movie aren't in the canon (or they aren't exist), so my old theory could possibly be wrong and dated.
Ursula belonged to a separate group of Mer-people that had squid tentacles instead of fish tails. She is the daughter of Poseidon and rules over the squid people. Her Freudian love or lustful desire for her brother Triton turned to jealousy when she attended Tritons wedding and discovered that Ariels mother was even more beautiful than she. Ursula grew angry and tried to start a war against her brother, defying Poseidon in the process and being condemned to live without a voice to sing with. Ursula than began studying and practicing dark magic under her uncle Hades making a deal with him to send all sacrifices to him in exchange for power. She than brought her sisters together and planned a coup to take over the Golden City and overthrow Triton. When Poseidon learned of what was going on he wiped out the Seven Sea Witches with the exception of Morgana and Ursula. The last two sisters went their separate ways and Ursula began to brood over her hatred for Triton and Poseidon.
Cool, I never thought of an ORIGIN story for Ursula. But that would be pretty cool to have a movie made about her like how we got Maleficent. Are they making one?

Or Triton may be the victim and Ursula is jealous of his throne because in the extended poor unfornate souls song, Ariel tells Ursula that Ursula tried to overthone Triton. So I'm thinking Triton did invite Ursula to live in his kingdom, but years later she was jealous of Triton ruling everything in the sea that Ursula wanted the job. It's very similar to how GOD banished Lucifer from Heaven because he plotted to overthone GOD.

I wonder what she did lol 😂 because in the second movie triton was surprised to see Morgana like “what the hell you’re still alive?” I mean he was shocked to see her and he’s like man hand over that baby or so so help me???? Obviously triton cared for Morgana and knew she was crazy lol 😂 I think a part of him felt bad for his “crazy sister” makes sense to me! 😂 seems Morgana didn’t really want to rule the ocean or over rule triton she just wanted to outshine Ursula haha and why did Morgana get nothing if Ursula and triton got objects of their own?
