I was in 3/5 Lima. I had several squad leaders and platoon sgts who served under Chontosh. My peers and I came up hearing about the tales like it was a Greek legend. Marines like Chontosh and Abbate are the definition of no better friend, no worse enemy.

This story has special meaning for me. I served as a radio operator with the mortar section, Weapons Company, 3/5 from 1977-78. The 5th Marine Regiment is one of the more famous in Marine history. Battle streamers include Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Chosin Reservoir, Hue City to name a few. Major Chontosh typifies mettle and caliber of all the officers of 3rd Battalion. Get Some Dark Horse! Semper Fi. You make me proud to be a Marine..

This one hits home. This man is a GWOT legend, and he just articulated what so many of us needed to hear. When stuggle become normal, we don't see it as stuggle...just normal. I've had too many that I served with take their own lives. It's always the ones that you'd never think would, everyone struggles. Thank you for showing that. S/F 2/7 E.

I like it when people can look back at their parents [or anyone] correcting them and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
No "I'm the victim". Just I was an F-up, and I was rightly punished.

When I served under tosh, fox 2/5, it was his leadership that reignited my love for the corps. Chill but tough when he had to be. I think it'll do him some good knowing that even though his marines saw him as larger than life; some of us remember him for his honesty and willingness to lift others up, not tear them down

I am so glad these stories are getting out for people to hear. The history is important to remember for sure, but how the service member moves on from the moment in time is even more important. That we all can be successfully humans after horrific things might happened while we served. I appreciate the guts to go on camera and tell the story and the whole production team that put this together. Thank you!

Best BRCC video I've ever watched. Pulled me in and kept me there, breathless. I'm left with an understanding I've been approaching since I moved to the Middle East in 1983: firefights are exciting. The noise and smells of firefights pick you up and carry you along on the crest of a wave. And you don't notice, maybe for years, how your spirit is being chipped away and worn down, bit by bit.
Yeah, not sure how to express what I want to say. Just that this video captures and describes my experience, not in the descriptive details, but in its essence.

I’m an Aussie and these stories make me feel proud of these men. I hope our govts learn to treat them better. Less and less guys are joining up and hopefully the govt hears these stories and understand the support they need to give and that it will never equal what these men gave. There needs to be incentive and reward. Active duty should mean these guys never need to pay tax again. More money needs to be given to the aftercare as well. It should be a descent % of the annual budget spent on arms. It should be run by veterans and professionals of their choosing so the only politics involved are their own.

I have never met Major Chontosh, but I have met a couple of the Marines who served with him. To this day, they'd walk into fire with this guy. They'd do it again just to have his back. I don't think I can really express the love, and respect, and admiration that he has from his Marines. At least, according to the ones with whom I have spoken. For me, as a "peacetime Marine," I appreciate his perspective on the dehumanization of warfare. We Marines, we can be monsters; and, at the end of the day, I think we each hope we were some of the good ones.
