Due to the amount of requests I’ve gotten for this ring I may consider redesigning it for more structural rigidity and reselling it in the future, KIT w/ my channel and I’ll announce it when I decide.
@@randysmithfabrications2731 if you ever are in need of quality moose base for rings it is solid and great for rings. I have lots of it to sell. Lfabich@gmail.com
Two thoughts. 1. Seems like it would help to cover your ring mandrel with some plastic wrap to keep it from getting glue and/or rock dust covered. 2. Since the ring is already spinning on the mandrel couldn’t you just use sandpaper as opposed to the sanding drum on the rotary tool…cheaper. Nice video. Thanks.
I’ve since began using electrical tape on my mandrels. I use the dremel because I can get very rough grits and the rotation of the drum doubles it’s effectiveness turning against the rotation of my lathe without cranking up the speed. I usually only do this to knock down the larger clumps and then finish by hand.
I have, but depending on what part of the antler you use you won’t see the matrix if it’s crushed. I’ve also used copper filings instead of wire so you don’t have a seam and it works great.
Unfortunately, the antler is not strong enough to hold up on its own and even this ring with a 1 mm thick silver band eventually bent and broke. Now I make them with much stronger inner silver bands, so that they survive and last a long time. Yes I’ve used many different kinds of sawdust with CA glue, they make for a great insert.
Thank you, I appreciate your comments! I am currently in the process of moving... and building a new workshop... and doing landscaping... there’s a lot going on! So much I wish I was taping it, but I’m not. And I definitely don’t have any time to do bespoke work at this time but I thank you deeply and sincerely for your interest!
Do you have any friends that hunt? I don’t hunt but I have a friend who hikes and collects shed antlers, and the tools you can get any number of places.
brian potter The lathe is a 7 x 12 from Harbor freight, I get most of my tools off Amazon. Machine shop specific tools I get from The Little Machine Shop and jewelry specific tools from Rio Grande.
rik3gs I go back and forth between Bob Smith Industries and Locktight glues, I like both. The activator is also BSi but is not necessary, but it is a nice convenience.
rik3gs not with the sanding. It was overheating too much I suspect with the carbide bit, but I had better control over heat related issues that may have been causing the failures when sanding.
Very nice. I'm happy to say that I just picked up a lathe just like your 😀 I have some questions for you but I can't seem to find your email address. If you have the time can you send me an email.
I appreciate the interest but I’m not doing any bespoke work right now. I’m currently in transition between a few things and I will get back to this channel hopefully soon.
Great instructional and the voice over is perfect.
I am going to go back and try to find out how to get the silver inside the antler. 👍
Great video, Voice over is great.

Great video, got a lot of new and great ideas for my shop. ? Have you ever crushed antler to do inlay. Just to use uptrend small left overs ?
I have, but depending on what part of the antler you use you won’t see the matrix if it’s crushed. I’ve also used copper filings instead of wire so you don’t have a seam and it works great.
Beautiful!
Really cool
Aulabaugh Photography thank you
I would just use the antler and not the silver insert
Beautiful ring. Have you ever used walnut or cherry saw dust with the ca glue?

That looks good
Don't forget Azurite from Bisbee!
Thank you for reminding me, that’s a great idea 🙏👍
Awesome! Could you put links to the epoxy and activator you use? Thanks!
Angela K. Sams I used LokTite CA glue and Bob Smith CA Accelerator.
Great job with the ring. How much do you charge for a ring? Where are you located near? Thanks for sharing your video.
Thomas Tommy I live in the southwestern US, price all depends on what you want.
How amazing!!! What do these run? Do you have a website? These are so unique and cool!

How do you go about deciding what to price your rings at?
How can I purchase rings from you, Sir. Love your work!
This ring is not for sale anymore. 😔🤷♂️ sorry.
Awesome work, can i know the price for one?
Sorry I no longer make this ring.
How much u charge for something like this?
where does one get all the tool sand "ingredients" to do this

Can you do the same thing with real gold as you do with peridot?
Villmarkens niese you could yes
What guage copper are you using?
I don’t remember exactly but shortly after this I began using copper powder to avoid dealing with the seam in the wire and achieved the same results.
Where did you get your lathe and your tools at

What did you use on the copper so it wouldn't leave a stain on peoples fingers
Russ Pack Nothing, the copper was covered in multiple layers of CA glue so there would never be any exposure to the skin
@@randysmithfabrications2731 thank you
Witch glue do you use? Is the activator necessary?

what type of glue did u use?
Bob J I like to use Bob Smith CA glues but if I can’t get that then Locktite CA glue works well too and you can get that anywhere.
Would you be interested in making something similar for me? Do you have a website or anything?
