    On the issue of adding dual pane glazing on the front doors it’s not really just making a small noise change as measured by Tesla Bjorn but he did notice when parked and sleeping overnight in -24’C temps the front glass was still clean and ice free on the inside but the rear door glass and roof was heavily iced. He thinks it helps massively with energy loss therefore using less heating from the heat pump

    Sandy, I like the idea of the glovebox secured Sentry Mode memory storage, but the execution has something to be desired. USB's are not optimal for high read/write frequencies and as located could easily get broken by items stuffed in the glovebox.

      I have a mini usb->microsd converter in mine with a microsd card optimized for dashcam footage. About as tiny as a Bluetooth dongle, but quite expensive. I think a run-of-the-mill thumb drive here is perfect. It's cheap, it works, and if anyone wants to upgrade, they can.

    • @tanner5265
      @tanner5265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can get USBs that only stick out a few millimeters now. They're much less likely to get broken, and UBS are cheap enough that you don't really need to worry about wearing them out from high read writes. Just buy a new one in a few years for another 10-20$ and you're good to go.
      I'd much rather have easily removable and replaceable storage, for a very reasonable price, than have a built in/soldered on unit.

    Thanks for the insights. Great to see Tesla constantly improve things. Haters latch onto the fact that improvements are required and fail to acknowledge that all car manufacturers have gone through the same improvement process, just over a much longer period of time. Tesla’s rate of improvement suggests that by the time they start catering to the truly mass market they will not only beat the competition on specs, innovation and price, but also on quality.

    Re 3:00, Honeycomb structure in the panel adds rigidity meaning the modes of the panel are different which makes the damping material redundant, more likely a part-specific vibration fix rather than elsewhere, if the problem was elsewhere on the car then on the original panel the whole panel would have been made heavier to improve transmission loss (sound like water finds the path of least resistance), instead, they added damping material to damped the mode shape of the panel. Just my opinion.

    On one Munro episodes the steering wheel from a Model 3 was cut up and there are segmented metal bars in the wheel, you didn’t know why. I think I’ve figured it out. I’ve noticed the wheel only heats up where your hands are touching. That’s right, when you turn on the wheel heating it doesn’t simply heat the entire wheel like other manufacturers. So the segments are working as capacitive sensors and heating elements. This saves energy. When you reposition your hands in the winter you notice the new spot is cold but quickly heats up.

    Having bought multiple Model 3s and Ys I do wish that Tesla would just add a HUD already along with REAL blindspot monitoring and cross traffic alert. Those two missing features are extremely annoying when they are standard equipment on vehicles costing 1/3 as much. I also would like a legitimate 360° camera or at least a wide-angle camera at the front and rear so I can see what’s coming perpendicular to my car if there is a wall, tall car, blind junction, etc. obstructing my view to the left and/or right. Most other luxury cars (especially BMW, Audi and Mercedes) have much better camera systems when their driver assistance packs are optioned. It’s a bit frustrating even paying for the $10,000 FSD package you get no additional sensors, cameras, radars, etc.

A Corolla and Civic and Accord and Camry, 3-series, A4, C-Class, Giulia, S60, etc. ALL have legitimate radar based BSM and cross traffic alert. The lack of the side firing radar units will definitely pose a major problem for these cars ever becoming capable of full self driving. They can’t see what is coming perpendicular if there’s any wall, tall car, bushes, trees, low light, condensation, etc. on the camera lenses. That’s why every other car uses RADARS for blind spot detection. It works in any weather condition and can see through objects.

    I'd like Sandy to do a video on the Mustang Mach E. Tesla has pin to drive as an extra security feature, Mach E has pin on the door so you don't need your keys.
    I think the 'Stang can receive the pin to drive feature via software update and be the first car to drive with a key/phone/card/fob/whatever.

    Tesla reinventing every wheel can be a problem. For example they put foam damping material in the tires to try and reduce tire noise but it's only marginally effective and makes replacing and patching tires harder. Legacy auto just applies damping material inside the wheel liner, which costs a bit more but works way better and keeps tires cheap.

  • @updlate4756
    @updlate4756 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bjorn tested the noise levels and saw no significant decrease in decibels between the single pane and double pane windows. Maybe there was a frequency change? My guess is that Tesla added the double pane glass for heat retention to make the heating system more efficient, or even to make the front passengers feel more comfortable, rather than to reduce cabin noise. Wouldn't be surprised if it's also to improve the sound of closing the door.
    As to the interior panel change... isn't it also possible that Tesla tested the interior noise levels and found that foam insulation had little to no impact on cabin noise, so they simply removed it? Isn't it a reasonable explanation that in their rush to model 3 production going, they didn't have the time to thoroughly test every single panel, and with noise being a clear issue, they started slapping noise insulation around the car without ever testing each individual panel's efficacy? A real test would be to drive a 2018 model with the foam in place and with it removed to see if it actually makes any difference.
    Regarding the wrapping the carpet over the panel, Tesla is once again getting high marks for doing something that other automakers already figured out awhile ago. What do these changes save them, $4 for the driver and passenger panels? Except unlike other OEMs who have been selling 4+ million cars per year, a $4 savings on every car sold is a $16 million improvement in margins. With Tesla only selling 500k cars per year, soon to be 1 million, that $4 bucks per car is really only increasing margins by $2-$4 million per year. Except, I imagine the addition of the double pane glass lead to an increase in costs of more than $4 per car.

    Sandy I believe they have ordered a state of the art paint shop for Berlin.

    • @airheart1
      @airheart1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah.. the issue with paint coming out of Freemont is it wasn't good from the get go.. they bought an old run down factory.. the paint shop was not the best, and they probably didn't have the money back then to rip it all out and go all new.. and to shut it down now and retool the whole thing to be state of the art would probably take a month or more of 0 cars built.. it would be a small disaster for them. And there is not enough room in the Freemont factory to just build a new additional paint shop and then tear down the old one.. they are just stuck with it at that factory. On the upside, all the new factories will certainly have better paint shops. And one day they'll have enough factories going where they can shut down Freemont for a month and fix the things they've been putting off for a few years

  • @PhillProbst
    @PhillProbst 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, so what we're learning here is that Tesla is making progress but is still learning the "building the car" part of building their cars. They've got a lot of balls in the air, what with building multiple factories, rolling out multiple models, iterating the design of things like the batteries & battery pack, etc. The model 3 you got is a transitional vehicle. When they start production in Texas with 4680 structural battery packs & one-piece front and rear underbody castings I think you'll see a much more mature design.
