I’m a member of this course and the Wednesday scramble regularly! We have right at 40 members. It’s a 9 hole course but there are 18 tee boxes so there is a “front” and a “back”. The school did buy the course and a very large bond was passed to redesign and add necessary infrastructure. I can answer any other questions you may have, Josh, though I am not the course spokesperson.
Any grass still alive at that course should be cultivated on a sod farm and sold for its high performance drought tolerance. I'm guessing it has to be some variety of Bermuda greens and tees?
@@dyounger3021 there’s quite a bit still alive. Tee boxes are watered the most though the greens should be. I don’t know what type of grass it is. The way we play, to protect our clubs is, if you land in the “fairway” you can tee up so that you’re not hitting off of rocks. We do currently have some grass in fairways here and there but it’s tough to keep it alive in this heat with the limited water. Going forward, when the new course gets built and designed, I believe they’re bringing in sand and soil for anything that’s supposed to be green.
This video made me smile as I grew up in Texas playing on 9 hole courses like this one. I even lost balls in deep cracks in the ground on supposed fairways. $1.25 got me golf all day plus 2 RC colas and a snickers (a long time ago). So much fun. Thanks for the video!
For $5 I would be out there until sunset. Love little gems like this. Glad to hear the school bought the course and is hopefully making it a little more playable.
And if you're worried about clubs, go to the thrift store and buy an old set. It's all about the practice and technique. For $40 a month, I'd be there a couple times a week.
seriously, the one employee they did have was chill. should be a 5. also not sure why customer service is even a thing in reviewing a course, like it almost never comes into play. you say hi and then play golf, unless they have a beer girl which while cool should not have such a heavy factor in reviews imo.
Has no one thought of the little portable hitting mats, usually used for protecting nice courses? With those and some bright red balls you could have a legitimate time out there
I was thinking same. Also synthetic grass tee box and greens. And take your aircon car as your buggy, leave boot open strap bag into boot sticking out 👍
That would be fantastic. And we need more facilities like this... not less. The amount of water and resources saved while giving people a chance to get outside and play inexpensively is definitely what we need more of.
Can't wait to see what the course turns into. Hopefully you do a follow up after it's renovated! That would be such a cool agriculture class to take as a student to work on turf.
You should play the course on Dauphin Island, AL, it is right on the water, it is partially abandoned and has basically an honor system for fee to play as well. Really interesting place to visit!
Dauphin Island was always the first course my team played during spring break in the late 90's. Would start there, then Springhill GC, then play on the RTJ Trail before heading home. Good times
As someone who plays what i call "cowboy golf" or "sagebrush golf" i love these abandoned course videos, its the closest thing to the kimd of golf i have played so far lol. I loterally just go out in an open field with sagebrush, cheatgrass, and a few juniper trees if im lucky. We set out an ATV flag at each hole which we dig with a garden trowel. Its honestly so fun, and its basically free.
Yo, carrying... and even just walking.. in the heat is tough. It's a workout and if you aren't keeping yourself hydrated when it's over 90 out, there can be some serious health concerns. Remember this experience! Amazing how well ya scored despite the conditions... dang.
My grandfather used to drop us off and we would play that course all day long then go to the pool. They just tore it all up to put in a new course. Glad you were able to get this video!
I love it. Great find. I rode my motorcycle to Alaska to play the farthest north PGA golf course. Condition was similar, only greener and permafrost heaves made putting a true experience.
Josh, you guys never cease to amaze me! You’re life is a great adventure most of the time; would love to play golf with you guys! Keep up the great content pal!
I am subscribing to this channel simply because this is awesome. I would definitely take a little turf mat to hit off of. I would have given a 10 for hospitality because that one guy was cool and otherwise, there was nobody there to give you a hard time and ruin the atmosphere, which happens when people are around. I would also give a 10 for the price: no way to beat 5 bucks!
This is the kind of track that exists outside of ranking systems like yours. Sure it's a dirt field for the most part, but it's unique, and the pay system is charming. It's hard to quantify as a score.
Having lived in and played golf in Texas my whole life, I felt every bit of that bent over, hands on knees after every shot. I know what time you were out there because it was that time of day when everything even looks hot. Once I hit a certain age, I just couldn't play in the middle of the day anymore.
Big fan. Been watching you since the beginning of the breaking par series. I live about 100 miles from Rankin and didn’t even know they had a course there. That place looks terrible. Lol
I grew up in west tx in Monahans and Kermit. Both of the courses have had some bad times but this one takes the cake. But I’ve definitely played on rough greens like you were putting on. 105 walking props to you. Glad the humidity is low.
I was feeling your exhaustion but I figured if you could make it all the way through I could finish the video with you. This was cool man. Reminds me of some Tin Cup stuff being in west Texas
Craziest thing is.... I played a course last year in Virginia. The greens were legit worse than this. They were 75% hard dirt and burnt grass. A month before they were in okay condition but it went to hell.
New sub here - you just appeared in my feed for the first time today. I think you are really on to something with the niche of the 'worst' rated courses. Keep up the good work, I'll be watching, right after I binge all of your older content first. (BTW, I also use the LAB Link 1, best putter out now IMO).
It has potential, I would love to see the students turn this into a case study for golf course management. Over the next 30 years alot of southwestern golf courses are going to be looking like this when faced with inevitable water scarcity. By incorporating course design features like swales, dry creek beds, large shade trees, and heavy mulching; the landscape can be designed to hold water for longer periods. Great opportunity for community engagement, education and philanthropy at work.
Try the Camp Crook course. 9 holes, no sprinkler or clubhouse. Located in a county pasture and maintained by a few volunteers. Located in NW South Dakota.
This reminds me of playing the base course at MCB 29 PALMS California 112 - 114 there was no one else out there so I just took my time they all thought I was crazy but being originally from Needles Ca i was use to the heat and it never bothered me !
Brother. I’m a former Army medic and I was just telling myself the whole time from the beginning of the video that you’re going to be a heat casualty. You really gotta prepare yourself better.
Ever tried to play in winter?? Here in Scotland you can join a course (full membership) for about £100 ($120), play as much as you want between Oct 1 and Mar 31. Some great courses, I've seen myself turning up, thermals on, mittens, hat, and subjecting myself to 4 hours of torture - - - - the one thing I'd never do is play when it's too hot outside, you can deal with the cold, but when you're too hot there's nothing you an do
How do you like your Takomo irons, I have had mine for almost a year and love them. I was playing Calloway Apex and honestly these are just as good for 1/3 the price.
Absolutely love em! Literally can’t tell the difference between my 301 cb’s and the mizunos I was playing before. There’s just absolutely no reason to spend $1300 on irons
Fountainhead golf course in checota Oklahoma. No grass on greens at all, bunkers are either ponds or have grass grown through, even seen a wild hogs running on the fairway
Lee Trevino cut his teeth on courses like this and look where he ended up. I played a course like this in Menard, Texas and it was windy just like this. Fun, but tough.
There is a course south of Cheyenne Oklahoma. Definitely got to try it! It's in worse shape than this. It's a rake the green golf course. Get a video of that! These course are slowly disappearing if not all gone by now.
Great contect.....but...please please please, go buy a hand-held camera stabilizer, or even just a gopro, which would make your video 1000% more watchable.
I love the first shot at 8:22. I would call that a 114 degree shot. I thought I played the worst Golf Course when I actually hit 2 cows. I souped up my Golf Cart to stay ahead of that MEAN Bull, ???
But, there's a strange beauty to all the "goat tracks" that lots of us grow up playing on or learn the game on. Some of them have amazing layouts/routings, just don't have the money or infrastructure behind them to make the condition match the layout. And, if you can strike the ball well at a course like that, then you can strike it well anywhere...
Played on a course in Quito Ecuador when in the Peace Corps way back when....sand greens and next to the runway ....I mean right next to the runway at Quito International....you had to duck down and wait for plane to roar down and lift off. Dont forget to rake the greens.....
In the early 60's I played a course in Gabbs, NV that had alkali fairways and oil/sand greens. In the early 00's I played a course in Council, Id that did not have enough income for watering/maintenance so they installed artificial greens and T Boxes. t-bo
There’s a course in Lewis Center Ohio that’s completely artificial turf, Little Bear. If you’re in the midwest and doing a series on wacky courses it might be fun. Actually not that bad of a little course.
You could probably come and play at the course across the street from where I live in Milo Maine. I go over there and play all the time for free they still mow it, but there is literally no putting because the greens are not taken care of they haven't been taken care of for 3 years
This is my first watch, I LOVE what you're doing. I'm a cheap golfer in PHX. So, this course looks like home. Your reviews need to include a layout rating, there can be a difference. Check out Stripe Show in Mesa AZ, bad condition - great layout, and of course CHEAP!
The beauty of disc golf, is that half of the courses I play are basically abandoned. Haha. But it doesn’t affect the play nearly as much as it does golf. It definitely takes a lot more to maintain golf courses.
There's an abandoned course in Santa Barbara, CA by lake cachuma called rancho San Marcos. It's been a few years but I saw its bones the last time I drove out thefe.
Worst course that’s supposed to be an actual course “Legends Golf Club” Stephenville. The good news is it’s a different course every day, depending on if mower works, greens have died, tornado blew tree down or they’ve changed hole #1 to #8.
I'm from the high desert and we have a course like this that gives you a square foot of astroturf to play your ball off of because it's literally hard sand desert. When you love a game, you play the game any way you can 😂

Poor Josh sure did pick the hottest day of the year to play and didn’t have near enough water!
Hearing great things about these Wednesday scrambles. Looking forward to seeing what the school does to the course!

I completely agree with this. It's golf for five bucks!!

Love that transition of you being out of breath on the teebox to being in the same position while on the fairway commentating your next shot 🤣🤣🤣
Hospitality rating should be higher ... Rudy was a really nice (and helpful) guy. Give him some props!
Agreed. Rudy was the man
seriously, the one employee they did have was chill. should be a 5. also not sure why customer service is even a thing in reviewing a course, like it almost never comes into play. you say hi and then play golf, unless they have a beer girl which while cool should not have such a heavy factor in reviews imo.
Hospitality so low??? That dude in the beginning couldn’t have been nicer!?
i think the rusty $5 box might have factored into the hospitality experience
@@supitschillbronawww how could it?? It took his tee time reservation without pause and instantly! Lol
Honestly, this is what a golf course SHOULD look like in the desert,
I spent a lot of time at this country club in the 70's as a kid. Sad to see the shape its in now but so glad you shared this video.

Great idea except even the cost of those mats would eat up all the greens fees collected. LOL!

We need a Bob Does Sports round here!! what a find.
The school is gonna use those kids to clean up the course and call it "extra credit".
Honestly it would be pretty cool to see and work on the rehab of the course. They’re college students, use that energetic free labor lol
The kids won’t be doing anything bc they’re remodeling the whole course
Dude the school is loaded. The kids won’t be doing it
“Internship”
Lol......kids to day, not all, but many of them don't work, don't wanna work and don't want you to think they will work lol!

I was stationed at an AFB in OK. The course looked like the one in the video. The greens and tee box were green, but the fairways were brown.
The ominous tones while the B roll of the janky conditions plays gets me every time.

You had a good wind. ALWAYS soak the tee in water before playing in 100 plus degrees…. A respectable score for the course. 😂
