The premise of this show is pretty good. The writing is solid, and it’s a neat concept, teaching people what they need to know about the law and such so they can properly defend themselves.
And David is such a great actor, he plays the quirky love struck empathetic-against-his-own-will characters so well (about half of his characters…). But that attempt at an accent. Where you supposed to be from boo? It’s okay love, you’re still great 😊

Finally watching this having heard about it ages ago, I can see perfectly both how it so nearly got picked up and also why it didn’t
It has glaring problems. The scripting is in places corny to sloppy and it smacks of early instalment weirdness and deliberately setting up way too many plot lines in too little time. Not to mention Tennant’s… extremely valiant (or as the Brits would say, “brave”) attempt at maintaining an American accent.
But I can also see the good bones. Legal dramas were becoming huge at the time and this has a really unique spin on the concept while starring some incredibly bankable leads. And frankly the problems are fixable: get a bigger script team and hire David an accent coach. It could have worked. But in an era where NBC wasn’t exactly operating at their best I guess they decided it was easier to just shelve it and get something else

I’d have loved to see it improve because it has the room to, but especially in 2010 NBC didn’t exactly have huge room for a show that might improve half a season in

I thought DT's accent was pretty good!. I'm curious as to why he suddenly started having Panic Attacks in the courtroom. They're not something that suddenly start happening. Or that's been my experience with my son. Cheers!

aaaaa thank you so much for posting this! I'm sick rn and watching this really made my day! Especially the jumping over couches and the part theatrical part cartoony way David has of pretending to pass out.
Rex is so annoying (affectionate) I'm halfway to in love with him already haha the fact this didn't get picked up may be saving me some sanity (I wouldn't particularly want to suffer the indignity of being down bad for a golf player,, a second time) but it's still a tragedy. I want to know the backstory of why and how Rex's anxiety progressed from having a perfectly successful career to literally fainting as soon as he tries to speak in court. I want to know if he can overcome it or would he just get so good at working around it that not being able to speak in court wouldn't be any hindrance anymore? And could he still save his relationship with Lindsey? ahhhhh fellas we have been robbed

@@aaronburrwaitsforit I'm in the same camp as you!!!! I was giddy watching this and I already love Rex so much, I would stand NO CHANCE if this was a full series. He's so annoying and dramatic and so clever and pathetically in love- just a top tier David Tennant character, I really think he would've been one of the most iconic DT roles if it was picked up, he had so many great character moments just in this episode!

@@lighinz137 right??? he's arrogant but he appears not to have like,, any self-worth outside of his pride in his skills, he's pathologically incapable of naming his feelings or even admitting he has them, he got so embarrassed about not dying when he said he would he ran off to Canada for months just so he wouldn't have to look anyone in the eyes, he's judgy af, but can also be understanding and patient, he's ridiculously committed to his job no matter if he's physically capable of doing it or not, he has daddy issues, he's a control freak, he's charming, he hasn't managed to tell his (ex?)fiancee that he loves her or that he's sorry for running out on her without notice but literally getting on his knees to ask her to come home with him is just fine apparently, he's so so convinced he's better than Bruce but his friendship is very important to him anyway, he uses rhetoric on all the people in his life but can actually take what he dishes out as seen with Lindsay, he's glib, he's wittty, he's funny, he gets deeply invested in going after injustice, he's passionate and being a complete bastard never stopped him from having a heart of gold. @@aaronburrwaitsforit YOU. YOU GET IT!!!! It's been weeks and I'm still thinking about Rex, and I think of the way you described him every time!! He has such high social intelligence and he wields it so expertly but it's not enough when it comes to navigating his personal relationships! He skirts the line between professional and immature in his job, and he excels at what he does. and YEAH he places his self-worth in what he can achieve, and he gives off the air that he's always excelled. He so desperately *needs* to be admired and is so preoccupied with his image and the way he fits into a narrative, something that makes sense. I'm definitely projecting but this obsession over how everything he does fits into a narrative means he's sort of a little bit always living in another world and struggles to accept reality, or even to see it, sometimes. And the onset of his panic disorder was so traumatizing and destabilizing that he *ran away for 8 months* but you can't call him a coward when he's so fucking determined to ignore what his instincts are screaming at him?? What the fuck happened to him during those 8 months!!!! He manages to be so self-confident despite his still very tender traumas regarding his ability and how he's viewed, WHAT a guy. I am rotating him around in my brain like a microwave
