The experiment fails because not all blocks take the same time to be chopped. Chopping stone is not the same as chopping obsidian, and the wood must be felled with an axe, not a pickaxe. You should have used several columns of the same material. I understand the idea that each spike breaks the material it is made of, but this really doesn't help to measure which spike is faster.
