To the people who don't know, After defeating the Portuguese, Shivaji Maharaj was mesmerized by the Portuguese swords as they're light and sharp. Upon inquiry, it was found that it was manufactured by the Spanish(Rapier Sword). Spain was under control of the Portuguese. So Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj requested King of Spain to manufacture the same swords for his army with twice the price in the market. It was also a step to trap Portuguese against Spain. Hence you can see Maratha swords are bit similar to the Spanish Rapier swords.
Though Rapiers are much thinner and longer than maratha swords like dhop and danda patta. More specifically firangis are more closer to European swords, as they were created in Europe and were exported to india.
Actually , Shivaji Maharaj was a genius who combined the European Rapier Blade with the Indian Khanda Basket Hilt . The Khanda Hilt is Unique in the world because it allows for both Single Handed as well as Double Handed Grip . And he made the Blade FOUR Feet long because His opponents the Mughals had Swords THREE feet long .
@@shatnermohanty6678 mughals usually used the persian shamshir which is radically curved, now i don't know weather it was 3 feet long, more probably you referring to the turkic khilij, which was actually that long.🤨
@@rage8673 in many videos , Maratha weapons experts have said Shivaji Maharaj made the Blade Four Feet long in response to the Mughal Talwar which is derived from the Persian Shamshir
This man is doing great work preserving our medieval weapons. I wish I could understand all that he told in this video. Please provide hindi or english subs alongwith this video for non marathi speaking Indians.
i was very interested in learning about all of these weapons used by the marathas and their opponents and hence was so glad i found this video, hats off to Mr Chandane for collecting, showcasing and moreover preserving these relics of our past and explaining everything that had to do with these weapons. Thank you The untold Stories for covering this avenue of our history which is often times so over looked. Har Har Mahadev
this was incredibly fascinating to watch didn't know such relics survived make a video in English or hindi it I'll have wider reach also how does one go about buying this to start a personal collection? auctions ? antiques stores ?
Very nice presentation and fantastic collection Sir. Please make such a video in English if possible - let the whole world know about these Indian weapons. Let them know that our ancestors dint fight just with sticks and battons as are shown in many western documenteries.
