First of all, let me commend you for this fantastic analysis!
The best scene in The Deer Hunter: Nick is in the hospital and is questioned by the medical officer. He cops an attitude at first, but when the doctor asks about his parents, Nicky completely breaks down. It's where the disconnect between his home life and the trauma of the war suddenly becomes rude reality. That's the most powerful depiction of PTSD I have ever seen -- and possibly, the moment of spontaneous method acting that earned Walken his Oscar. I'd also commend the scene where Mike is alone in the hotel room and has his own moment of deep, brooding reflection...much more subdued, but a fitting companion piece to his buddy he left in country.
Say what you will about The Deer Hunter being inferior to Apocalypse Now, but the former film left a much more important legacy in real life than Coppola's masterpiece. From the official NPS website for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.: "After watching the film The Deer Hunter, Vietnam veteran Jan Scruggs decided that his fellow soldiers needed a tangible symbol of recognition from America of their service and sacrifice. By 1979 a memorial fund was formed, and in 1980 land in Constitution Gardens was authorized for the memorial placement. A design competition was announced, and 21-year-old Yale architecture student Maya Lin earned the unanimous selection."

Nice comment and I totally agree with you.. Walken literally gets questioned because his name is Russian until he breaks down crying. I like de Niro's scene in the hotel room more. It seems he's used to sit on the floor in the position he sits in and has that wound on his head from being hit all the time.. That hotel scene everytime I watch it it gets to me.. I like deer hunter also more than apocalypse now it's way more realistic especially what war does with people

At first I thought the favourite scene might be John the bartender playing chopin in the bar, but I changed my mind. About the bar scene though, apart from the poignancy, it's the last time they were ever truly content before everything got messed up for literally everybody. Dzundza's character is always overlooked in its importance but he was like the glue between them all, keeping them all entertained and keeping the spirits up. That's why it was so upsetting to see him crying at the end as before then, he'd always just been the life and soul of the group. All in all I still think the deer hunter will have a much longer lasting legacy than apocalypse now as people are more drawn to a human character story than anything else you can put on film.
Oh and my guess for the favourite scene must be Nick breaking down in the hospital before he goes AWOL. It's the most intense scene for me and portrays the anti war message in the most hard hitting way. I can't think of anything else more poignant. Some of the subtle interactions between Michael and Linda are also amazing, especially during his homecoming, but i'm only allowed one guess.

Having lived in Pittsburgh (Clairton, the steel mill town where the Deer Hunter takes place, is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area) for 12 years, my main quibble with the Deer Hunter is that they filmed the hunting scenes in the Pacific Northwest, as opposed to the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania.
I get that the Cascade Mountains of the PNW are more naturally dramatic than the mountains in Pennsylvania; but, it takes away from the realism of the story.

Personally the best 4 movies about the Vietnam war are Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Deer Hunter and honestly out of all of them, I prefer Deer Hunter a little more. The Russian Roulette scene had some of the greatest acting I've ever seen in a film. De Niro and Walken both gave groundbreaking performances. I've heard the conversations that these films don't give an accurate depiction of the Vietnam war but I believe they try to at the very least. Both Platoon and Deer Hunter won Academy Awards including Best Picture. Deer Hunter in 1979 and Platoon in 1987

Agreed: Apocalypse Now is the better movie. Seen both in 1979. Apocalypse as a 70mm print with fantastic multi channel sound, The Deer Hunter as a 35mm anamorphic print and so-so optical sound. I love The Deer Hunter and it would be absolute perfection if it wasn't for the uneven pacing, to the point hat it seems there is a lot of footage missing. Village massacre - CUT - a hut at the river where our friends are held captive and forced to play russian roulette. Mike chasing Nick, but it vain - CUT - back in Pennsylvania, etc. Hmmm.... The dramatic music score (not counting with the fantastic guitar theme Cavatina) also sounds very old fashioned, with short cues only and bad sound - almost exactly like the first Mad Max a year later.

Despite the main country both movies are set in (Vietnam, probably filmed in Thailand) storylines are completely different : one's assigned by his superiors to terminate a renegade Colonel with a questionable history and he's in command of troops, the other movie focuses on a small community where three servicemen live and their traumatic experiences after being captured and the aftermath.
The content of each - quite understandably - has violence and scenes that are disturbing, however those are fictional stories that reflect what others have done for real - no need to draw comparisons.

    • @realbobphilips
      @realbobphilips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

You’re actually a moron if you think that. First of all I’ve seen this movie more than forty times. And no such dialogue exists where the characters talk about fire works. The closest thing I can think of that’s remotely similar to that is at the Bridge when they keep shooting up flares but that’s not what I was talking about. Secondly do you actually think that those projectiles the NVA or any other communist force were firing at the boat were bottle rockets. Like of all the weapons they could have used do attack the enemy do you really think they would settle for that and have thousands of them to rapidly shoot all at once. I don’t think so. And lastly if those were indeed fireworks then how could they have made bullet holes in the boats hull or have been strong enough to penetrate Cleans body and kill him. You are gravely mistaken.

Could a rocket that small really kill somebody? Yes! The Gyrojet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrojet shot rockets at least as small, and they could hit with greater energy than a .45 ACP.
Did anybody use little rockets like this in Vietnam? Probably not. But it sort of fits in with the movie. It's weird, just like everything in this movie is weird.

I think the director made the decision to leave out the machine gun fire audio from the ambush scene to make the confusion on the boat more real and relatable to the audience. In combat most of the time you usually see the bullets hit something or kill someone before you hear the shot or even hear it. And there’s been movies in the past where the filmmakers don’t broadcast the gunfire sound effect for artistic and creative purposes to make it more cinematic for the audience. Prime example of that would be the shoot out in Buffalo Bill’s basement in Silence Of The Lambs.

IMO, there's no competition. Apocalypse now, at least in its tighter theatrical cut, is a masterpiece. The Deer Hunter isn't even a good film. It's wildly overlong, has zero charactersation, no pace, no interesting dialogue, and several uninteresting scenes that drag themselves out to Doomsday for no reason whatsoever. The most egregious examples of the latter are the half hour long wedding scene and the dinner round the table before the credits, but overall it's an unnecessarily tedious effort with only a handful of memorable scenes. The deer hunting scenes are nicely photographed and have a Malickian quality to them. The score is good. The Russian roulette scene is good, but it isn't as affecting as it could be because you know nothing about the characters. Why has Christopher Walken's character snapped but no one else has? Why is De Niro's character risking his own life to try and bring him back? You learn nothing about either of these characters or their past relation to one another. Why is it a three hour long film when the plot is slim enough to fit within 90 minutes? Why could nobody be bothered to write one single piece of memorable dialogue? Why do so many folk pretend this sleeping pill is some kind of masterpiece?

Two of the greatest war/anti-war films ever made, along with Cross of Iron and Come & See. Both are brilliant and have many memorable lines and scenes. Although I love both, I slightly prefer Apocalypse Now for its deeper sense of war as hell, torment and madness.

Except it's not an anti-war movie or a war movie, Cimino said that like 50 times in his interviews, so just stop it.

    My unpopular opinion:
Apocalypse Now is better than Deer Hunter and Full Metal Jacket is better than Platoon. In fact I even consider Hamburger Hill as third best.

@@realbobphilips I can't help but think about great times I had with my buds every time I see those guys hamming it up with karaoke 'Merican coal-country style! Chicks love it too, by the way: many women have told me they love that scene as well. Oh, well, since I have only one guess I can't suggest my other favorite scene: Willard emerging at the top of the temple, having just killed Kurtz, and he has the opportunity to become a god as the people kneel before him. That moment of temptation is unique in film, to my knowledge (excluding silly super hero movies). I don't think I've ever seen any other film deal with that. Unique.

jarhead is another meandering movie with nothing to say and nothing interesting for the characters to do that happens to be set in wartime. Casualties" is about war crimes and what war does to men and is hard to watch -

No, no, no! First of all these movies are incomparable on any level. Second, and more importantly - which by some mysterious curse every airheaded wannabe movie critic on YT gets wrong - is that Deer Hunter IS NOT A WAR MOVIE. It's not. And Cimino, who made the damn thing, said so in every frikkin interview he could. So just stop, people. Stop calling and viewing this as a war movie, you're totally missing the gist of it with that outrageously wrong premise!
