I've never trailed, and your video just made it something I'd definitely consider in the near future. Thanks very much for all the detail and thorough explanation.
Sweet. Thanks, bro. I had a '76 super bus when I was a kid...I miss it. I'm still committed to German vehicles. Had a BMW and I'm on my 2nd Jetta. Too bad about Diesel gate, though. I really miss my TDI. That thing could fly!! Probably the fastest, most powerful car I ever owned. That thing was rated to tow more than most small trucks. I miss it...Great vid!!
@@JonnyDIY There's nothing like boosting out a screaming Harley when my foot is only half way down. The automatic car would bark a wheel in 3rd gear. And I had tihe trip-tronic shifter...No need. It did it in auto. Not even sport mode. Just regular auto.
Thank you for the outstanding and very in depth video! Btw….I love your VW Bus, I’ve had several through the years. That was also what I learned to drive in when I was a kid. My Dad and I used to overhaul Volkswagen engines. I miss those days! 😎👍
You're very welcome, thank you for your kind words 🙌👍 Awesome, yeah they're fun cars, it's a shame they've become so rare and expensive to find nowadays. I would love an even older one.
This was beyond amazing! Thank you I’m moving from Jacksonville Florida to Nashville Tennessee and I have a 23 Camry. I appreciate this video I’m saving it and I subscribed to your channel 🎉
U-Haul sells a set of longer straps for vehicles with larger tires. $30 for the pair. They are 8 1/2' long. They have a metal bracket on one end that connects to the round metal bar behind the tire. Very easy to use. My truck has 33" tires. There was maybe a foot of extra strap once it was cinched down. They might work for 35" tires. Not likely for 37" tires.
Hey do you recommend a tow dolly or a vehicle transport for a Saturn vue 2006 model that is inoperable? Looking to get it transported myself to avoid hefty towing prices
If the vehicle is 2 wheel drive a dolly is fine. If awd or 4wd, get the vehicle transport trailer. And if its a long haul and you own a vehicle that can pull the trailer (it'll be extra weight) or are using their truck I would opt for the trailer as then you dont have to worry about blowing a tire out on your vehicle 👍
Question, shouldn’t that jack stand be lowered when loading the vehicle? I have seen this trailer get lifted and unlatched from the hitch because the stand was not lowered when loading/unloading the vehicle .
Thank you for info. We’re gonna moving a uhaul from Massachusetts to Arizona with auto transport too. Can I ask if we need to stop at weight station or we can bypass?
You're welcome glad to help. It depends how big of truck you're renting and which route you're taking. I suggest calculating the weight of empty truck plus empty trailer plus cargo and car weight. Then map out your route and check regulations for each state. Some states require you stop regardless but some you have to be over a certain weight limit
This is a really helpful video. Does U-Haul recommend transporting the vehicle unloaded or can you pack you VW bus with stuff you'd like to move? Thank you for a really good video, Jonny! 👍👍👍
Thank you & you're welcome. Uhaul does not recommend loading a lot of weight into the tow behind vehicle. A few evenly distributed things is ok. You don't want to throw off weight distribution. And you want to be sure that you're not exceeding the trailer or max towing for your vehicle. The big one is insurance may not cover an accident if found out it was heavily or improperly loaded with things 👍
@@JonnyDIY I was thinking along the same lines, but thank you for laying out the perils of loading the towed vehicle. It makes a lot of sense. Better safe than sorry. 👍👍👍
You could but make sure on level ground with both sides tires chocked and dont load or unload if not hooked to hitch. Can also throw some jackstands or blocks under if worried about tipping depending on vehicle balance
Hi Jonny, thanks for the video, is it ok to unhook trailer, with car loaded on it still? Just wondered if maybe that’s too much weight for the jack or no?
I just watched the whole video you told me more than U-Haul did. I had to trailer twice the first time in my life. I did it the other day and I had a couple questions based on watching another video about trailers. One question was they said you should measure your tongue weight which I don’t know how to do and then the other video they showed the guy put a level on it to see that the whole thing is straight which U-Haul doesn’t have and the other question is how do you know that your ball is lined up with the trailer. my truck sits lower down than an F150. this is supposed to be so easy a caveman could do it but I wasn’t certain I know what I’m doing plus U-Haul didn’t tell me that that side thing can be disconnected or slid down so I had to climb out the window. I didn’t know.
Nice job, nerve racking towing those first couple times. I usually lower the trailer tongue so its just a little higher than ball on truck so can see and line up easier. Glad I could help 👍
Heyyy Larry! Haha yeah I've done it a few times. Yeah I hate moving too! The whole thing, going through everything, packing, unpacking. I've been going through all my boxes finally to sell stuff, it's the worst! Haha 🤣

I thought that was very helpful (thanks). However, I saw another UHaul video that noted 4 safety wheel chains should be not real tight ?

never done it that way no, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to especially with a very heavy load.
Is there a place for a padlock on the hookup? Also, is it possible to move the trailer around with your own strength if it is empty?
I believe there's place for a lock. I don't think you could move by hand, this is a heavy trailer. You could with the tow dolly
Thank you for info. We’re gonna moving a uhaul from Massachusetts to Arizona with auto transport too. Can I ask if we need to stop at weight station or we can bypass?

Won't the safety chains break something underneath the vehicle
@@Luvdiamond4ever no, not unless you route them improperly and they pull or hit something not supposed to.

can i disconnect the trailer from the hitch without removing the car?

You're welcome, glad to help. No it should be fine. Be sure to chock the trailer wheels beforehand though 👍
The U-haul Car hauler Front Jack has a load Limit. It is never suggested to unhook a trailer with the vehicle on it@@JonnyDIY
i would think those straps can be over tightened and possibly snap during transport.
If they break from hand tightening like that, then they needed to be replaced 👍 you want them tight. They'll loosen up if you dont
The rear engine of the VW might be the only time you back a vehicle on to the trailer. Max weight at the front of the trailer.
Good point, but no way I was backing that up there 🤣
don't forget to connect the safety chains or you'll lose your valuable honey!~ LOL
