When in London, we go to the Malaysian restaurant in Camden Town (forgot it’s name) because it’s pretty authentic and close by.

Nyonya is a marriage between Chinese and local Malay cultures when the Chinese arrived. Some of the Chinese men who arrived in Malaysia in the very early days married the local women. I am one of their descendants.
yes that is the text book answer. Just a little additional information, Nyonya or Peranakan, they are actually Chinese merchants that married with the local people of the Malay Peninsular or Indonesian archipelago. The locals were not necessary Malays, since a Malay is defined as someone that is from the Malay Peninsular and is of Islamic religion. However, there were actually Peranakans before the spread of Islam.

Hi Nigel, the Peranakans weren't the product of Portuguese marrying the local Malay folks. It was actually when Princess Hang Li Po from China and her entourage came to Malacca and she married Sultan Mansur Shah and her servants also married the locals. That's how the Peranakans aka Baba Nyonya was born. :)

I just have to say, I worked as a delivery driver for a restaurant where all of the cooks were Mexican, and they gave me the first authentic tamale that I'd ever had. It was incredible. A few days later, at my primary job at a propane company, a food truck came to get a refill and he gave me a tamale. It was just as good. Don't discount food trucks. They can serve some amazing food.
Nigel putting his noodles on the spoon like a *real Malaysian*! Respect. I've noticed here that many soup/noodle dishes come with shorter noodles so you can eat them with a spoon.
Padi is the plant you get rice from. It literally comes from the word Paddy in English. Before it was commercialised, cili padi were harvested from the wild which are way smaller than the ones you find in farms, thus the name cili padi.
Uncle Roger Al-Nigel. You got it a bit inaccurate with your definition of Nyonya etnic in Malaysia (*Correct me if I'm wrong, i dont claim to be 100% correct ya!). "Baba & Nyonya" is an etnic borned from inter-marriage between the local people (the Malay) & the Han race of China that came as entourage with Princess Hang Li Po of China Kingdom, to wed the King of Melaka (for diplomatic reasons between the 2 ruling Empires of that time) in the old Sultanate of Melaka Empire in 1450's & 1st resided thereon in. The entourage they said was about 500 people or more of the China Han to permanently live in Melaka until this day. The Baba & Nyonya etnic remain a vital community n citizen of Malaysia until today and having their mother tongue language of Bahasa Melayu. yeah slightly overcooked. the egg shouldn’t have a shape when it’s in the bowl. it should be runnier. when they mix the white and yolk tgth, it shouldn’t have pieces of egg white. but i like it really runny. some people prefer it firmer like that
Once the yolk has some coagulation it’s “overcooked” for this dish. The entire egg needs to be silky smooth and slide down your throat. Anthony Bourdain in Singapore asked why eggs aren’t eaten like this all over the world...

5 quid kaya toast 😂 It puts me in mind of how in Indonesia you buy sate (or satay, whatevs) by the 10s. Rule of thumb is like 10 sticks per person, so if you're 2 people with normal appetites maybe you'll order 20 sticks. If you're like my family, the 3 of us tend to finish 50 sticks in one sitting. Now I'm living in Europe (traveling a lot between Germany, France, and Italy) I don't think I could afford the silly pricing of "satay" around here. And here one portion is only 2-3 sticks! 😂

Back to the story So my nephew vomit all his intakes and his dada and I when to a drug store and bought a liquid antihistamine.
It's kinda messed up when you eat nasi lemak first before hainanese chicken rice. It has more delicate taste, which you should eat before nasi lemak with strong flavor.
Nasi Lemak & Hainan Chicken Rice !!! I have tried Milo (it is like Ovaltine - chocolate milk) = that was on the shelf, across from Uncle Roger. Sambal (like the Sriracha aka spicy ("rooster/chicken") chili sauce, by Huy Fong) fish paste (shrimp and/or anchovies ?) is always good. as a malaysian i dont particularly think that the economy is great, but it is improving and that im proud to be able to eat extreme dishes like asam laksa which can damn spicy.Other than the food being amazing here im also proud that i can mix 3 language into a sentence
I loved this! You gotta have him back on after the lockdown.
Aww thank you!! Ahaha we’ll have to plan more videos in the future! ☺️
You’re both so funny and have a natural chemistry. It’s be so cool to hang with you both!
Aw thank you, Amy!! 🥰🥰💛
No! This girl is very pretentious. But I can certified she is 100% singaporean. Or she can be social nerd or awkward! A lot of singaporean don't like to go out from house. That's why they play too much of phones. It is not healthy. From big data singapore is the place where people spends most of the time on phone. this should be the issues the government to be attend. Lee Hsien Long if you reading this. Please do something. Help our citizens.
@@dejashu to be honest did I dated once? Long time ago I was at temasek poly and you told me you were study nurse. We dates for couple of time. And what the hell you don't know cili padi. Ok maybe only our side knew.
Nigel wrongs about nyonya! And you didn't correct him. It will be very cenematics.
First time I've watched one of your videos. You're lovely. I'd go on a date with you!
I love Asian food and like to make it myself at home xx
Baba Nyonya are the Chinese who came to Melaka during the 1400s. They maintain the chinese culture but as culture exchange, they mainly speak Bahasa Melayu.
Portuguese who assimilate with locals are called Serani.
Ive just eaten dinner and now I'm hungry again 😂 All of these places looked amazing and you two are such a good duo!
Nawww thank you, my love!! Will have to take you out to these places when we’re on the other side! You’d enjoy the food!! 💛
idk why but it's satisfying to hear you guys saying cantonese since im from hkg
please do more series !!!
Aw, thank you! I have an entire Cantonese playlist on my channel if you're interested (though I'm still practicing haha) 😊
Nonya/peranakan are from interracial marriages of immigrant Chinese and native Malays. Their food evolved from a blend of the two cultures.
Most of Peranakan food comes from Malay and Southeast Asian culinary tradition. Even Ayam Buah Keluak is from Rawon. Laksa is from Laksam.
@@Khatulistiwan Laksam is in Bangaldesh. Laksa and Laksam may sound alike but there's no evidence that there's any relation.
Every state in Malaysia and Singapore has its own version of laksa. Asam laksa with its distinct sour taste from tamarind is known to originate in Penang.
chili padi also known as bird eye chili in english. thanks for the wonderful video. although im not in UK but i'm Malaysian who r away from home as well, homesick inbound!
This Chinese lady is more white than Auntie Hersha.
Coconut is the name your looking for ?
@@winnie-the-poohahaha4428 more like "Banana"
Banana
But she kicked uncle Rogers ass in the Chilli challenge
Her Cantonese is pretty good. So I think she is less white than Auntie Hersha.
Ya please! More Nigel.
damn the egg yolk so overcookeddddddddddddddddddd AHAHAHAHAHAH U FEEL ME SINGAPOREANS?
looks "acceptable" for me haha
yeah slightly overcooked. the egg shouldn’t have a shape when it’s in the bowl. it should be runnier. when they mix the white and yolk tgth, it shouldn’t have pieces of egg white.
but i like it really runny. some people prefer it firmer like that
Yeah dude I was thinking the same
Once the yolk has some coagulation it’s “overcooked” for this dish. The entire egg needs to be silky smooth and slide down your throat. Anthony Bourdain in Singapore asked why eggs aren’t eaten like this all over the world...

So glad they kept in nigel telling his backstory about becoming a comedian
14:43 wait, so Nigel Ng was married?? I'm so confused I thought the marriage thing was fake?
Great eating episode!!! Absolutely LOVE Nigel! Very funny and well informed. Great show, Shu!!! Love your Channel❤🌹
Thanks Amy! So pleased you enjoyed it 🥰🥰♥️
Nigel actually looks handsome!
Anything with Uncle Roger in it deserves a Like from me. The last time I was at the Market, Mei Mei's not there. Just a Turkish Delight massive stall in the middle of the open market.
Malaysians who know Nyonya history is not gonna let Nigel live his history lesson down 🤔🤗😁😂
I guess that's why he is now in UK. Did not get A in history.
Was he describing Eurasians (instead of Peranakan)? My dad's Melakan Baba, and I don't have Portuguese ancestors.
@@cheryl8069 Think, probably he is just clueless ,like many other Malaysians who were shirking off during "Sejarah" classes back in their school days.🤔🤗😁
6:56 A fork? 😳 Didn't expect that... 🤣😂🤣
Watching this makes me never want to leave Malaysia though I've had thoughts of migrating like many Malaysians do. Despite showing some of the "best" foods in this video, I have to say they still got a long way more to go before they can achieve that traditional and local Malaysian style of cooking. The price point is a whole other issue! Great video and remarks and jokes!
Honestly I watched this video because of nigel and I really loved it and I loved shu she's so cute and loveable
Aw Mia!! Such a sweet thing to say, thank you! 🥰💛💛
@@dejashu I love you
Love you right back! 🥰
5 quid kaya toast 😂
It puts me in mind of how in Indonesia you buy sate (or satay, whatevs) by the 10s. 😂
Awesome ! He was fantastic when the British Chinese Society BCS (you can search on TH-cam) attended his live event ! Thanks for supporting such an awesome talent 👌
Thanks Gordon! Nigel is hilarious so I was stoked to hang out properly! ☺️ Hope you’re keeping safe and well!
Shu you too. I didn’t realise your dad used to work in 奇華 bakery. That’s where my dad used to work !! Also check out the BCS and keep up the good work for BBC everywhere in the world ✊. th-cam.com/video/QSJuPtTKeBs/w-d-xo.html
UK: healthy food
VS
Malaysia: tasty food
I left London ( and a Malaysian Indian GF, regrettably) in 1981. I remember going to Brick Lane, East London with my GF for the best Indian food anywhere !
I came here after watching uncle roger as cashier
Thanks for watching, Marcus! 😊
Nyonya Baba is a mix race of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian. That were born in Malacca
Soybean curd puffs are probably one of my favourite things on this earth
It’s so amazing, isn’t it?! I love it when it soaks up all the sauce/soup/broth 🤤
Shu omg yes 😍😍
@@dejashu explode in mouth. So nice! So Nice!
They have palpable chemistry
Nephew Nigel: Take the risk. Eat a peanut.
Uncle Roger: Why you no eat peanut? So weak!
Awesome video. We eat this stuff everyday in Singapore. When I was in Europe for just a month, I miss our food sooooooo much.
Hell. Peanut... Allergy. Reminds me of my nephew. We he felt something wrong. His air passage is getting thighter. We asekd if there's a peanut in any of our food then I looked at the sause. The waiter after we call one went to kitcehn and confirmed that it had peanut. The last time I ate an different resto, they put in the pack of sause that it has peanut ingredient. Back to the story So my nephew vomit all his intakes and his dada and I when to a drug store and bought a liquid antihistamine.
Why so weak? So weak - uncle roger
The more you avoid it the more it will harm you.
so weak, so weak
It's kinda messed up when you eat nasi lemak first before hainanese chicken rice. It has more delicate taste, which you should eat before nasi lemak with strong flavor.
Where are the ikan bilis (anchovies) ? Nasi Lemak is incomplete without the anchovies.
I have been to KL, on the path towards Bali and Borneo (Sabah Island). In Bangkok, I did go to a (big @$$) Tesco store to buy snacks.
I found you after I found Nigel after I found uncle Roger 🤣
I love eating so much.
I have lived in the UK for 4 years.
Unfortunately, I just found your video when I will depart from the UK soon😭 so I will have no time to try your recommended food.
Anyway, I subscribed your channel 👍
Yes, love to see Nigel!
A hilarious day filming together! 🤗
What happen to uncle roger’s chinese accent? 😂
Koh S Chao did HK accent, not Malaysian
@@jturner1774I think its a malaysian accent too but people didnt use it as much nowadays
@@jturner1774 it’s Malaysian accent, but many of Malaysian Chinese also speak Cantonese as well which probably why it sounds like HK accent
@@kyronology1533 pretty sure Peter Chao is HK Chinese though?

No worries, we ordered enough so we all could have it together after we finished filming! 🤗 The kaya toast is great - definitely worth having!
Nigel, you are so likable & good looking too! Best wishes!
Uncle Roger very happy to work in the 1st restaurant :)
Hope that wasn't Uncle Roger's last day of work...
