Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, arrived in Goa in 1498, establishing a trade route between Europe and Asia. He was impressed by Goa's strategic location and natural harbor. The Portuguese colonized Goa in 1510, and it remained under their rule for over 450 years. Da Gama's discovery of Goa marked the beginning of European influence in India.
