  • Pimp My Eight, Episode 7:
    Total refurbishment of an Atari 130XE, the best 8-bit computer ever made by Atari, and one of the finest examples of 8-bit computer engineering ever. The motherboard is recapped, tuned up, cleaned and upgraded with The Byte Attic's special "Sally" CPU replacement board. All key chips get heatsinks. The case and keyboard are restored and a brand new keyboard membrane is installed. The episode ends with a game of Missile Command.

    I love 80s computers getting PIMPED to the maximum and getting upgraded to USB and new cables.I wish I knew how to do that . Imagine surfing the internet on one of these Atari XL or XE even a ST 512

      @@nickolasgaspar9660 hi again!
      I have a 65XE, and two 130XE. Although one of them I have a 320XE mem upgrade plugged into back of it. Very handy having the extra memory.
      Great news with the 1050, another one saved!

      @@nickolasgaspar9660 I used to have an 800xlf, I gave it to a friend of mine few years ago.
      I have quite a few 800xl, all standard, but I am thinking along the line of upgrading one. The 800xl is by far my fave console.
      Two of my 800xl were given me as faulty and they had those MT chips aswell, so just whipped them out and put tesla replacements in. They now work a treat!
      I've recently been restoring cassette programs onto new tapes using Turbocharger XL. Brilliant utility!
      Away to work soon so catch you later!have a good one 👍

    I've managed to completely remove all jailbars from my XE by taking the Video input power (5a and 5c on your diagram) and removing it up from the board. I then brought a wire directly from the main smoothing cap after the switch to drive this. Bars gone, video circuitry isolated from the power rails shared with the RAM.
    The problem seems to be that Atari picked power rails at random and mixed the rail that drives the RAM with the rail that drives the video circuitry - as a result, the video is full of RAM related decoupling garbage. Those rails also route around the PCB, right beside a bunch of noisy components. Taking the power off the board and into a wire avoids all this.

    Thank you for your video, a suggestion to improve the sound, if your camera can use a microphone or Bluetooth microphone, clip it to collar or chest will greatly help to avoid the hollow room reflection.
    1) There are long leg socket, I want to test it later, maybe no need to use 2 stack together
    2) Not sure if the non-polar capacitors can be replace with polypropylene, usually with higher tolerance and much longer life

    Were these modifications and upgrades only needed to be done on European atari computers, or can they be done on American atari computers as well? I live in the states and have a 65xe computer. What upgrades or modifications do you recommend for me to do on it?

    • @thebyteattic

      There was nothing region-specific in what I did, so I guess it is all applicable anywhere. Only one thing that I did was, strictly speaking, unnecessary: changing the SALLY CPU for my adaptor was mostly done to test the adaptor, as the SALLY in this unit was working fine.

  • @percussion44

    I guess I find the power draw of an old 8 bit so utterly insignificant, does the custom upgrade w6502 do anything beyond low power draw? The GPU in my PC probably pulls more amps than a closet full of Atari's so...? Why bother I guess?

    Great job; Always good to see another classic saved! Are there known games/apps that don't work with that Sally replacement (due to use of undocumented opcodes)?

    • @thebyteattic

      I am sure there are, but haven't come against one yet.

    • @3vi1J
      @3vi1J 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thebyteattic: I think I would have kept the original Sally in it (though testing the replacement in that model was a worthy endeavor) in that case, and saved the replacement for when there is no other option. It seems like your board could be combined with something like hackaday.io/project/165624-mocka65xx-universal-650285xx-cpu-replacement to get 100% compatibility with maybe minor modification?

      @@3vi1J I do keep all original parts I remove in my historical parts stash, for safe keeping. Interesting project you linked to, thanks! They, of course, need to use SMD parts to fit all the functionality in the limited space available. To me that defeats the purpose a little, as the technology wasn't available at the time the original machine was made. Once you cross that boundary, why stop there? FPGAs (think MISter) and emulators do the job too. I am OK replacing ULAs and PLAs with FPGAs, since they are gate arrays as well, but entire SMD-based circuits bother my sensitivities. :-) Anyway, this is just my personal, subjective feeling, there is nothing objective about it.

    • @3vi1J
      @3vi1J 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thebyteattic Yes, I can see your point there. There's a very weird line here, trying to balance period-correct tech with 100% compatible replacements. Maybe one day there will be enough interest and a cost effective way to churn out clones of the original CPUs and support chips... hopefully within the lifetime of those of us who grew up playing on these 8-bits.

    Allegedly the RAM (refresh?) creates video interference/artifacts. Shielding it from the rest of the computer might improve video quality by installing a single large grounded heat sink on top of the RAM. Never heard of any undocumented opcodes specifically for Sally vs a 6502.

    Wouldn't it be possible to quickly and easily test your hypothesis about the jailbars being due to feedback from the Color Circuit by temporarily removing R201?

    • @thebyteattic
      @thebyteattic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since I finished the video, I realized the problem gets worse when memory is being intensively used, such as during a memory test. So the interference seems to come from there.

    Was the Sally chip sctually bad? Was its replacement really needed? Also, why adding those heatsinks? The chips do not overheat at all, especially the ROM chips.

    • @thebyteattic
      @thebyteattic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The original wasn't bad, I changed it for kicks and to reduce power consumption and keep things cooler. ANTIC and GTIA do get hot. ROMs (mask defined) usually are indeed cool and indestructible today, but the VIC20 kernel ROM does become incredibly hot for reasons I don't understand. Since I noticed that, I place heatsinks on ROMs.
