It's a bit hard to find a Chinese friend as a foreigner, you know, because of the language, the culture, and most Chinese people are shy. I am glad you make some Chinese friends and protect you, most Chinese people are friendly, but no matter what country there are some unfriendly people. Wish you have a good time in China.

@@celenial6009 that comment is pretty straight forward. But I'll contextualise it for you, most black americans usually get mad over things like people touching their hair, people starring, whites or Asians braiding their hair like black peoples hair, speaking like them "ebonics", and all that they call it cultural appropriation or trying to "act black", but Africans Especially Nigerians don't mind at all. They'll even be happy to help braid your hair, introduce you to their culture and food, have you wearing their clothes, listening to their music and all that.

A Black woman will always make friends and maybe date someone in any foreign country, but the same I can't say about black men. Everyone looks at us as if we were thiefs, illiterate, aggressive, I don't know why but it is very sad. Specially in Europe and Asia!
Women understand each other but men are a different story... it is so good seeing how well she is communicating with all those people in China.

To be honest, as a Han Chinese, I do like secretly stare at foreigners, no matter they are black or not.
I know it's a bit impolite and uncomfortable for foreigners and im really sorry about that, but I just CANT CONTROL MYSELF.
Most of us have been looking at similar faces for thousands years,we got 1.3billion people looks the same.Do you know how boring it is?
China's ethnic minorities know that, so they are very happy being national treasures. But you never know that, because most of us dont speak English.
Otherwise, you will meet a million people who ‘hi’ to you every day.

As a man with an Asian appearance living in Europe with my wife and my child, personally, I detest labelling people, by their appearance or whatever characteristic. I think the over-categorization and stereotyping is a self-protective behavior of human beings, and it is more serious in the weaker and more ignorant people.
I can share you a vision from the other side. I have a habit of keeping a journal of whatever brings me to reflect. Since my first arrival in Europe in 2009, I have been assaulted, harassed(threats, unwarranted verbal abuse, spitting, physical attacks) and attempted to steal 27 times, 22 of which originated from unknown people of African including North African descent appearance.
      - Appologize to give this example of categorization by appearance(actually I met far more kindness from this group), I just want to say that from my personal perspective, this phenomenon certainly exacerbates the situation, especially if many people have similar experiences to mine and they don't have much energy to strengthen their hearts against discrimination. Also, it's much more easier for people to remember the bad things.
Coming back to my bad experience, it was really shocking to me at the beginning, because in my previous life in Asia, I never had such an encounter. I had anger at first, but because I had daily interactions with black classmates, colleagues and friends, and I also followed some rational black public voices, I knew that each individual was an independent being and thus did not get caught up in the race hatred.
Right now I think the best solution is to increase communication and avoid information blocking due to media and political influence. I admire all the people who understand this and are trying to fight for it in their lives.

Not because you mean any harm, but because you genuinely don't understand how they could exist. the kids in the village would use this term, 'Ones with their skin inside out' to describe people who were not black like them.

Busola, I was watching your videos and this one made an impact on me. The fact that you’ve have used scriptures really speaks in volumes. What stroke a cord in my heart was when you quoted the Scripture of being like children Matt 18:3 shove my heart. I had tears because that scripture spoke to me in such a way that just didn’t know how to respond but to tear up. Just seeing the innocence of those children was so impactful. God Bless you Beautiful and thank you for sharing the word of God!!! You don’t know me from atoms but I will keep you in my prayers and heart. With love and respect….. Angel.

The reactions of the people reminded me of my trip to India, though in India, adults stopped what they were doing to stare. They even turned their vehicles around if they were driving to have a good look.

That ring around the sun actually isn't a rainbow. It's a sun halo. "A sun halo is a rare optical phenomenon in which a ring is formed around the sun as light gets refracted through suspended ice crystals in the atmosphere."

As an ethnic Chinese from Laos but now living in the states...its refreshing to see your adventures and interactions with the locals. Unlike you Deborah, I will be having a difficult time as I do not speak nor understand word beyond hello and thank you. Its obvious after the introduction that I would get generally shame by the Chinese. Even here in the states, when I visit my local dim sum restaurant with the family. My dad would speak Chinese and suddenly they look at me and it becomes a funny lost in translation. Anyhow, if you are ever in the states (California) let me know...I don't do the Chinese thing since I don't identify much with the culture. However, I am pretty American and with that saying...I am pretty adventurous.

It is actually shocking for so many people to be surprised that local residence, particularly from small rural towns and villages, would looked "shocked?", "intrigued", "curious", "surprised" and the like to see/meet people of a very different nationality/race from themselves. Something that they may never have or rarely come across. Would that not be the same if it happens in Africa, East Asia, Europe or the Americas or anywhere else for that matter?
30 or so years ago, it would not be very much different if the situation were the same in Shanghai, Guangzhou or Beijing. So people shouldn't be too bordered, surprised or shocked by curious stares, surprise or inquisitive reactions of the locals when they come face to face with it.
