- We can buy a liter of Wild Turkey 101 Rye Whiskey for $29, and we think that's a great value. But it's time to see how great of a value it really is. We're putting Wild Turkey 101 up against Rare Breed Rye Whiskey, a $60 bottle that we love, to see just how big of a difference the proof and price make.

I find WT 101 rye to be one of the most underrated bottles around. So great.

I’m from Mexico. I consume gallons of mezcal and tequila. But since I discovered wild turkey 101 & 101 rye I’m so in love with it. I respect the turkey so much for the value it offers in every sip.
Thanks for the Wild Turkey 101 Rye vote - haven’t had it yet. I love Old Forester 100 Rye, and recently picked up Smooth Ambler Contradiction Rye, winning some recent awards. Will compare these 2 soon to see which one I prefer.
I’m still new to this whole whiskey thing, but I’ve been especially enjoying various WT offerings; 101 is my favorite daily drinker. Picked up a bottle of 101 rye recently and I’m now convinced the Russells are alchemists. Love your videos; this one caught me off guard!

If you haven’t had WT Rare Breed bourbon yet, make sure you give it a try. It’s amazing, like chocolate covered cherries.
Oh, I’m into my second or third bottle of RB - part of the reason I think the Russells are alchemists. Everything I’ve tried from there is just great.
WT 101 rye is great
I set up my own blind taste between these two rye whiskeys after watching your video. I am dumbfounded, but the WT 101 was my preference, too. Longer finish, more viscosity, greater complexity and the one I just wanted to keep sipping. Remarkable.

I’ve came back to this video a few times. It’s time to revisit with a flight of Turkey Ryes… 101 Rye, RBreed Rye, RReserve 6 year Rye and maybe another. Regardless, great content as I keep revisiting this episode. Y’all are the best couples bourbon team on the Tube!

I’m going to make a 50/50 blend of Rare Breed bourbon & Rare Breed Rye. I’ve had good results mixing 101 bourbon & 101 rye (I call it a 202)😎
I do this all the time, but more like a 70/30 blend in an old fashioned, it's just fantastic.
Is Rare Breed Rye worth the extra 31+ bucks vs 101? I would say no. Okay now a blind of WT 101 Rye vs OF Rye!
We've been bypassing the 101s in favor of the Rare Breeds, both bourbon and rye. Now we are hearing so much love for the 101s that we may just have to look lower on the shelves and try them!
101 Bourbon has never been our favorite, but this rye is something else.
Do it! I love them both, and prefer the 101s, both bourbon and rye. And when you figure you can get three 101s for one Rare Breed-there’s no competition.
I actually had some WT 101 rye last evening. Maybe I’ll sip some tonight along side the RR RB rye 👍🏻

Huge Rare Breed Barrel Proof fan....join the club. Like the barrel proof rye but not top tier for me - still, I thought 'No way' on the 101 Rye. Picked up a bottle today because of this video. OMG!! For the price....an unreal value. Punching way above its weight. Thanks guys! Love your stuff...

That Benchmark Full Proof is not available in the Chicago area so my wonderful wife, on her way back home from a road trip to Florida with friends, ran across the street from the Arby's they stopped at in West Lafayette, Indiana, to a liquor store she saw, and scored me three bottles at $18.99. I apologize for that last sentence running on longer than that road trip to Florida. Anyway, seeing my wife show up with three fifths of 125 proof bourbon, and the picture of her dashing off to the liquor store made me much happier than the Clearwater sweatshirt that she also got me. lol

@@TheBourbonVan that's wild that you know that place! Funny! Yeah, my wife is awesome. She looks at me funny sometimes when she sees my bottle collection, but she still puts up with it. She's not much of a drinker outside a very occasional hard lemonade or vodka and cranberry juice.

I completely agree with Julie that Rare Breed Rye, (and Rare Breed) can sometimes almost be too spicy, but I’m glad you also pointed out that what you get in any pour depends on the day.
Any given day could go the other direction, but there's no denying how satisfying and delicious that 101 is for the price.

Love the Guy Fieri comparison! I love Rare Breed but it is rowdy and sometimes I don't feel like getting yelled at by a guy in a muscle car!
Basically the repeated "yummy, oh yummy" is my new favorite tasting note and sold me in 101 rye. Just got some and, yeah, yummy.

I just did a search on Ytube for "Wild Turkey 101 Rye vs Rare Breed Rye" and you came up #1 in the stack. The reason I searched it, is I was at the liquor store yesterday, and picked up two bottles of WT 101 ($19), and two bottles of WT 101 Rye ($20). Almost picked up a RB Rye ($60), but finished a bottle of it ~ eight months ago, and wasn't that impressed. So this is a great comparison, and I love how you put them in the trade space, meaning you can get two or three bottles of the 101 Rye vs one bottle of RB Rye.

That was really interesting. Pretty telling that 101 did so well against RBR. That shows just how good the 101 is. There is nothing wrong with RBR obviously. That said, why spend $60 when you can get such a terrific rye for less than half the price (750 ml). Wild Turkey is such a wonderful distillery. I can’t say I have had anything from them that I didn’t care for. Longbranch and the 87 proof products would be my least favorite. Still, if someone dropped a dram of either one in front of me……yup, I would drink it and say “thank you”.
The Rare Breed is a different type of delicious. The creamy mouthfeel and big flavors would likely pair really well with a decadent meal or a cigar. The 101 is just a solid, approachable, incredible value bottle. And you're absolutely right. Outside of the lower 81 proofers and the Longbranch, you can't go wrong with Wild Turkey.

These bottles are stellar ryes and a great value. Just picked up the Rare Breed Rye at a local Costco that had an insane amount on the shelf for $50 which is the best price I have seen in the past few years. Great blind tasting content and no surprise with the WT 101. Hope Julie shared some more of that 101 with you Phil after the video! She looked like she was on a rye mission. 😂🤣
$50 is a great price for the Rare Breed Rye. Honestly, after this tasting, we don't know if we'll spend $65 for it again.

I was in Kentucky a couple weeks ago and the WT distillery was closed to the public. On the other hand WT just got two nominations in the OSWAs.
The glass shortage and pandemic put a damper on our visit, but at least we got to say hi to Jimmy.

What a great blind! I love both the Rare Breed Bourbon and the WT 101 Rye, but have not had the opportunity to try the Rare Breed Rye yet, so now it's at the top of my shopping list. Glad you like the 101 Rye as much as I do, and I love to use it for my Manhattans. Phil's Chef analogies were great! LOL!! Since you mentioned mixing Cocktails, I would really like to see you do some shows where you mix your favorite cocktails using your preferred spirits. I'm always looking to improve my cocktail game with New ideas. Thanks again and Cheers!
We're such novices when it comes to cocktails, lol. Sazeracs and old fashioneds are our primary sippers, and rye & gingers on hot days. That's about it. We'll think about doing a proper cocktail video in the future though.

Rare Breed Rye caught me off guard one evening. I may have already had a couple of different pours. But, I took a drink and went whoa what did I pour here, then remembered Rare Breed Rye. Let just say it has a permanent seat on my bar. I'll need to try the 101 Rye I have.

Holy smokes I got all big saucer eyed and almost spit my bourbon out when Julie went in for the first sip without the traditional "Cheers!" Redeemed herself last split second :) Feel like Phil's "Gonna Need More Sips...for Science" should be a T-shirt or Glen or something :) I have the Rare Breed Rye, and enjoy it, but see how it can be on the spicy side. Not tried the 101. Got me intrigued now. That 101 really made Julie happy...was fun to watch...Cheers!

My first rye love affair WT Rye 101
I couldn't find it for a while than there it was on the shelf, I bought 4 bottles thinking I hit the jackpot of a lifetime not knowing it was out there to be had again, Also if memory serves I believe it was a Russell's 10 year Single Barrel that I've never seen again that was the bomb.
We probably go through a bottle of 101 Rye every other month, so even those 4 bottles would go quick.

Great blind and the shelves look awesome. I have shelves ordered for our den turned into a bar at our new home. Phil, my question to you is how did you decide how to arrange? High end up top to bottom shelf. Or alphabetical order. Or another way I haven't thought about. Anyone can chime in. Just want a professional point of view. Cheers from Tim and Therese.
A bit of everything, but the shelves are sorted mostly by type of whiskey. Rarities and stuff we really like on top, ryes on the left, single barrels on the right, and a hodgepodge of all sorts of things on that second shelf. Trying to mix it up and represent every type of brand and bottle so we don't just have a bunch of fancy, hard to get stuff out front.
That all makes sense. I don't have the collection you do, but I do have say 30 or so bottles. Really like our favorites on top and separating the bourbon from the rye. I'll figure it out and thank you for the needed help. Will send a picture once completed.

Personally, I have Wild Turkey 101 rye along with Jack Daniel's SBBP rye and that is all the rye I will ever need. Really no need to buy the Rare Breed.
Love the RB rye, need to try the 101…I’ve been doing a lot of 95/5 MGP, New Riff, and also Wilderness Trail of late. I also see y’all finally got a Still Austin Cask…I’d love to know how you feel about it in comparison to Straight?

Does the rye burn worse than the regular whiskey’s
There is a distinct spice that comes through from rye grain generally, but the Wild Turkey products we've tried tend to have more lemony sweetness than spice. A nice entry point into rye is the Old Forester Rye if you can find it. It is fruit-forward and very mellow, but it definitely tingles the tongue.
Hey friends...we're headed to Bourbon & Beyond fest this week in KY and wanted to pick your brain for suggested "found mostly only in KY" bourbons you could recommend, from bottom shelf to precious cargo...any thoughts?
Hi Jeff, we honestly don't have a lot to offer in this department. We usually just troll for bottles we don't find in our neck of the woods, and we're always on the lookout for single barrels. Justin's House of Bourbon always has terrific barrel picks, and some of the distilleries offer KY-only bottles in house. Enjoy the fest!

What's the difference between rye whiskey and a wild turkey bourbon whiskey
A couple main differences between bourbon and rye:
- Bourbon must have at least 51% corn in the mash bill and rye must have at least 51% rye in the mash bill
- Bourbon must be aged in new charred white oak barrels.
