I've worked in live production for nearly 20 years, mostly on the side. My advice is BE VERSATILE. Depending on what clients have needed, I've done recording, live sound, back line/guitar tech, monitors, lights, video playback/fx, etc. it's easier to get work when you are adaptable.

2:45 woah, that was an unexpected surprise! Thank you for responding to my comment Glenn. My apps are geared towards musical practice and the first one that is close to finished is a metronome app with several advanced features like polyrhythms, which is the reason I started developing this app and it has grown from there. It’s also very customizable so you can show the features that you want to use and hide the others. I still have a few minor things left to finish on it and then I need to get the business setup, so that's going to be the next major thing. As soon as all of this is done I’ll get in contact with you and I'd love to get your thoughts on them. Thanks again.

to all aspiring musicians I´ll tell you the hard truth my dad did to me. At the time it pissed me off, but now , almost 20 years, later I know he was right. in 2001 I had to choose a career for university and my father told me ¨Son, you´re a logical person, good in math, physics you should study engineering¨. At the time I was totally into music, guitars, my band was playing the local scene with great feedback and I´ve replied to him that I´d like to me a musician... and them the wild truth enters the scene, he said ¨son, you love music , but you love even more money. What would you rather: playing music that you may not like it everyday or being able to buy any guitar or car you want it?¨ . 18 years later I´m driving a Porsche, own like 17 guitars , still playing metal, still have a band and I´m really happy. To all aspiring musicians: have a safe net. listen to Glenn and do it as a side activity, if by some bizarre reasons you became rich and famous, drink one for me, if not... being able to pay your bills and having a reasonable life is GREAT TOO!

Man, I enjoy watching your tips and lessons here, and, I can say that you helped me more than I expected for youtube videos!
I started my life in music back in the 90's, when I was a kid, and learned the oldschool producing, and, now, I am starting my learning on producing in computers and digital recordings... a whole different new world from each other. I love to make it oldschool, but, digital makes everything more faster!
Nowadays, I am working more making shows with my band, but, I am studying to make good productions for our new song releases in the near future!^^

    Such an appropriate episode!
I learned many years ago that sometimes you have to create your own opportunities. I made it into a professional band (an endeavor that were the best four years of my life), produced albums, and had a six-month gig editing video for a local TV show by doing some homework and making myself available for the person needing a specific skill.
If you sit on the couch and wait for the phone or doorbell to ring, the only thing you're gonna have to show for it is a nice clean spot where your ass kept the dust away.

Other great audio-related careers for people who dont feel like being "starving artists":
    -Corporate/event AV tech
    -Installation tech
    -Product design/development (hardware)
    -Audio app/DSP developer
    -Repair tech
-Broadcast audio engineer (news, sports, etc) (Look towards college athletics for this one!)
And one of my favorites, home studio design/consulting! A lot of people are willing to pay someone to come in and show them how to run their home studio rigs they just bought and don't know how to use.
I've given most of these a try throughout my short time since graduating college, and freelancing will allow you to do a little of each to see what floats your boat! I've started working full-time with an installation company specializing in courtroom AV systems, and I'm so happy I took the time to try different things to find this path!

You're damned right about the Horrible Reality! I started playing guitar shortly after Jimi Hendrix died, and did my first professional gig when I was 14. I'm 58 now. The struggle ends at death, not a moment sooner. But I've had experiences and accomplishments I wouldn't trade for anything. The stories I could tell,,,
I've also done some recording engineering back in the analog days. I was the engineer, manager, and in-house studio musician at two studios in New York City, and came close to having a gig as an assistant engineer at Electric Lady. Eventually, I built a home studio, and never looked back.
There's a book I highly recommend; "The Art of War," by Steven Pressfield. I despise self-help books. 98% of them should be sent to paper recycling plants, and the people who write them should be given enhanced behavior modification therapy in special hospitals. Pressfield, however, is an ex-Marine, and has the right attitude and approach to becoming a true artist and true professional.
I better get back to work. Thanks for the great work you're doing, Glenn!

I'm totally down for the cover contest!! I have a side project with my guitarist where we just tear down songs and rebuild from the ground up. It's helped us massively in our regular originals band... First off, the songs are already written, so the writer's block factor is taken care of. Then, we choose some songs we want to do and look at different angles to take on them... we get to work our chops and arranging skills while figuring out how it'll go. Since this process is relatively quick, we can knock out a 6 song EP every 3 months so we get a massive amount of studio time under our belts. We get to try out different recording techniques and even different instruments that probably would get used in our proper band. Also, since I'm doing all the mixing, I'm spending lots if time using the tricks I learn here and on other channels in the process. My skill has made significant improvements in the past year!! Fuck you and thanks for the very informative channel!!

Hey Glenn, your question about iOS. The 2 biggest DAWS are Auria Pro, and Cubasis. Kymatica’s “AUM” is a full featured digital mixer. BeatMaker 3 is similar to Ableton live: real time stretching, scenes, automation etc. I am now calling myself an “iOS Producer” because I have given up on MBPro’s and computers. In the last 2.5 years, I have realized that so much more can be accomplished with LESS tools instead of more. Example: Plug ins. I have HUNDREDS in OSX. I have less than 50 in iOS, but....I know them intimately.😎 There are a lot of pro soundcards available that don’t specifically state iOS compatibility, but actually ARE.

RECORDING A SINGLE GUITAR TRACK: I completely agree that you should do at least 2 tracks of guitar. However, if you can only have one track of guitar there are things you can do to make the track sound bigger. My favorite is to pan the guitar 30 to 50 one direction and then bus in a short reverb putting the reverb hard panned in the opposite side. Bring the reverb volume up to just below unity with the actual track volume. I've also panned the track dead center and used a little stereo chorus and stereo reverb. A third way that I've done when using a daw is to duplicate the track and pan them hard left and right. Then I eq them differently by scoping the mids out one one track and then bringing the mids up in the other track.
Like I said, the first method I mentioned is my favorite. Listen to the first Van Halen record. A lot of the guitars on that record are that way except the reverb is longer and not as loud as what I do. But that is where I got the idea. All in all, I say experiment! Some of the coolest things I learned was from experimenting. Especially back when all I had was cassette 4 track recorder. What do you think Glenn?

    Another great video Glenn!
I'm the singer/rhythm guitarist in a metal band - we're all pretty young. Often, it's hard to tell whether or not something we've written is actually "good" or not. We aren't really close with anyone who's really into the genre to give feedback, so when do we know something is "good enough" and can be left alone?

  • @markmalinowski5951
    @markmalinowski5951 5 ปีที่แล้ว

My uncle gave me great advice on trying to get a job in the music industry... "If it's easy or fun, people probably already do it for free. But it's a far more useful hobby than video games." I've never made a dime playing music but I agree with Glenn that music is what keeps me sane. Problem is that many young people today don't have the patience to learn an instrument when they can get much more dopamine faster from video games... when what they really need is patience.

Glenn, talking of well recorded drums; what are your thoughts on the drum sound from Life is Peachy? As much as I've grown out of that kinda music, whenever I go back to that album I am amazed at the overall presence of the drums. They're so damn crisp. Do they represent a shift away from "realistic" sounding drum performances to something more polished and uniform?
I love the sound but I wonder what it takes away from the drummer themselves in terms of expression.

Hey Glenn, gotta thank you for teaching me practically everything I know about recording, mixing and mastering music. You're great dude. Question though. How do you prefer tracks be recorded. I've heard some people say they record section by section, or more or less riff by riff, and others say they do multiple full takes of a song, and cut in bits and pieces of the best parts of each take. It seems obvious that maybe latter may be a better way, as you have to play the whole song each time, giving you more practice actually playing it from beginning to end, but what are you thoughts?

For that 4 guitar method, if the guitar player is having a hard time keeping tight enough (or to save time), could the 1st track be reamped to the other tracks to give the illusion of 4 performances, or will it just end up being massive but not in a good way?

I live in a smallish city in Queensland Australia (about 100,000 people). I finished my audio engineering degree and found the same thing, impossible to get a job. So I decided to offer my services to a guy opening up a new studio and record young people who can't afford to go to the other studios here (they charge a little above normal rates). So i decided to offer it at a significantly lower price. My question though, I get a bit of work doing this, but I think I'm stuck charging this amount now, how do I work my way up from here?

Obviously while tracking stuff I’ve messed around with EQs, panning, compression and reverb. Do I send the stems with the these, or bypass audio effects entirely for the engineer to start from scratch? I don’t want to send the wrong things and piss off the engineer/make myself look stupid, please advise! Thanks so much, love your vids x

I’m at a weird point where recording is hard because i’m having to record with garage band on my phone and move it to my pc to edit in cakewalk so recording one track can take 5 plus minutes each time with a slow computer where as in most cases it’s as simple as pressing a button and playing. i’m really new to audio engineering so pardon the noob question. love your vids and fuck you Glenn!

Cheers, Glenn! What is the advantage of ramping a guitar sound? I mean, normally when I record I adjust my picking hand dynamics according to the amp in question, as where to get the proper harmonics and how to get the "sound I like" from a specific gear. When you reamp something after the performance, wouldnt you lose said nuances? - Obviously, not talking about changing from a fender to a diezel, but even between similar amps there is a fairly huge difference in the sound.

I’ve been using a 6 mic setup for drums that I love right now, mono condenser room over head, stereo dynamic pair 90 to the floor, top and bottom snare and a kick. Sounds awesome, and I can control how forward the toms are, while making them sound nice and organic with an analog spread. Not the best choice if you want super hype toms but great for most genres.

My band didn't have a drummer for a whole year, We did some recording and used programmed drums. When I programmed the drums I spent hours making sure each hit was at a different velocity to make it sound as much like a real drummer as I could. In my opinion the only way you can tell they were programmed is the fact that they are perfectly in time.

I've built a multi track recording tablet for my Masters degree. It uses a raspberry pi cluster computer, a touch screen, and a full blown Ardour DAW with 4 channels of I/O and phantom power. The pre-amps sound incredibly clear for how little it cost to design and build them. And all battery powered and portable. It was a really fun project, and once it's all done and I get my thesis defense completed, I was going to just release it out to the DIY community to build and improve upon. Apps for your phone are great, but if you want to record with a Hamasaki Square or a Decca tree setup live out in the field, with your good microphones, somewhere that electricity is hard to come by. Also nice that it's a solution you can build for a couple hundred bucks all by yourself if you know how to use a soldering iron.

Hey Glenn, on the topic of drums, I know usually a metal drum set has bigger and fuller heads for a more deep bassy sound. What are your thoughts on going cross genre and using for example a fusion, swing, jazz type drum set with smaller heads and bass drums? I found that depending on the wood of the build some drum kits, independent from their size, can achive a more cutting tone without sacrificing that umf that is so desired for metal. Cheers

Hey, I agree but I do have some slight distinction on your point - or maybe the interpretation of your point.
Working in the music industry is hard. I've been trying to break through since my first band as a child. But even if you never make it, it's not horrible! It's hard, yes. But it IS fun. In my opinion anyway.

Its nice to hear someone talk about using a mic on a bass cab for a change. Most "how to record bass" tutorials or whatever basically boil down to "plug straight in," which is fair because you need to make things really simple for us bass players. Anything more than that will hurt our brains. But on a more serious note, I've always enjoyed the sound of my amp mic'd with a DI coming out of the amp itself. Get it in phase, and the bottom end takes on a whole new life without losing the higher frequencies. It might be old school, but sometimes the old school stuff just works.

Hey Glenn. You're telling us to never mix on headphones.
But is it any different on In-Ear monitors? Like the kind you'd use on stage if you don't want to become deaf.

    • @DawnofExistence
      @DawnofExistence 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Olaf van Rijnsbergen it will essentially be the same thing. Any headphone is going to change the imaging and your frequency range will generally be very different.
My only advice for mixing with headphones is do several A-B comparisons. Grab a few songs you like and compare them to your mix; not necessarily volume but how each instrument sits in the mix. Hope that helps 🤘🏻

    • @Mtaalas
      @Mtaalas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are physical reasons why the frequency response of headphones, or in ear monitors is never as flat through the full bandwidth as good pair of monitor speakers. It's a bit of a long story why so i'm not going to go to details, but it has to do with impedance matching (not impedance of the phones, but the impedance matching of the driver to the acoustical space/air in the ear) to the fact that you have one driver for the whole bandwidth that has unavoidable resonances (because physics) throughout the bandwidth to how the acoustics of the headphone system inherently works... so you pretty much can never have very flat frequency response with headphones.
At least until you pay as much for a pair as you'd get very high end monitor speakers for. So after that... it's a bit like "Why not get speakers since you'd get really good ones with that price."
Then there are issues with no cross-feed, having completely un-echoic acoustics etc. that will distort what you think is going on etc.
So it's always a trade off.

Not recording app, but 'Neutron' is one amazing work of art for high res audio from android's.
You can control the number of channels, distance from speakers, Dither, output frequency, phase inversion, a highly effective 30 band EQ, pre-amp volume control, etc... the list doesn't end..do check it out, Glen!
    It's a money worth spent!

Hey Glenn, I remember you saying that you record the bass above 80hz so the bass won't interfere with the drums. I may be remembering wrong seeing that I heard you say something like that in one of the several dozen videos I've watch on your amazing channel. If so, how do you record the B string that's at 30hz and how would you record lower tunings such as those in a Kalium Quake Bass? Thank you, F from Hialeah, Florida (Hi ah lee uh)

I'm not Glenn, but I don't ever remember him saying 80hz...more like 40, and that 80 is the harmonic of 40 ...just like 60hz will supply enough 30hz to be perfectly audible

Is there a reason why guitars are always hard paned? I often find that when there are 2 different guitar parts that are hard paned (like the intro to In to Deep by Sum 41) it can be a little weird. in my recordings, I found it painting thing about 70% either way sounds pretty cool. Is there anything wrong with doing it like this?

My band's going to go talk to Jackson Ward from Strata Recording soon to discuss recording our next record. Didn't realize he was local to Indiana until he randomly friended me on facebook a couple months back. Thought i recognized the name from your channel, and he also did some work with one of my friend's bands in the area as well. I'm pretty stoked! Looking to do live drums with him at the very least.
We actually have a good drummer now, compared to our last record (which the performance and end mix was bad enough we had to redo the whole thing ourselves with superior drummer.) So I'm hoping it turns out well
    Lesson for people:
Dont pay for live drums if your drummer cant handle doing it. you're probably going to have to redo it anyway. Tell them to practice or find someone new.

Recording Bass my best experience is going trough Direct Out of the Amp AND hooking up a Kickdrum Mic in front.
Mic about 25% away from the Cone, pointing towards the Cone, distance to metal-grid (speaker protection) about 1-2 cm (1/4-3/4 Inch).
What do you think about that glenn?

I know you don't like sampled drums, but what about sample replacement? my band recorded some live drums and I'd rather use live drums but I have way to much cymbal bleed in the kick. The drummer didn't want to cut a hole in his resonant head or take it off. The engineer said he could do sample replacment's and it would still have the same dynamics.
What's your take on this Glenn? Any advice on how to make the kick sound good and control the cymbals without losing the nice high end of the kick?

It's kind of ironic for me to hear the stories of the audio guys having computer skills as their backup. I'm a systems administrator/IT manager, and when I worked in a factory as the IT manager, it was assumed that I knew sound recording and video production. It just happened that I had run live sound for theater in high school, college, and community theater, (once live mixed a 21-piece big band.
That's a job for an ambidextrous octopus, but I digress) and my tech did wedding photography on the side, so we managed OK.
Sounds like there's something in the skillsets or at least mindset in common.

1:38 The same for musicians. Mastering your instrument may last some time.
Ravi Shankar, the absolute grandmaster of Sitar who recorded with the late Beatles once was asked, how long it lasts to have this perfection. He answered: "I am practising now for 50 years, and I have to say, l am just about to be satisfied to my abilitys."

Hey Glenn, I wanted to take the time to thank you for all of the work you have done and for inspiring me a great deal. I was first introduced to you by a friend because I played bass and I wasn’t too great, your sarcastic tough love approach really motivated me to be the best musician I could be and now I am a songwriter in my own band. That is not where your motivation ends though. Throughout high school I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life and was planning on skipping college until you and your videos about recording metal got me intrigued. Your videos helped me realize that I really enjoy the production side of music and the physics of electronics so I decided I will be attending the University of Hartford to study audio engineering technology. Thank you for unintentionally helping me find my path. (Sorry if this is massively cringe but I thought you would like to know your videos created positive change in a strangers life, Fuck You Glenn!)
