When I was young my mother took me to a church in which the mass was in a language that I mostly did not understand. I went through the motions, but did not understand the gospel and teachings and that was a huge loss. If the mass is in Latin, although powerful, if the partitioners do not speak it, the message and teachings are lost.
We cannot assume that they were not taught the meaning of the words in their own language. If that were the case, it would be very ineffective evangelism which is contrary to the evidence of the fruit of that effort in Africa.
