I’m sure you know it was recorded in Tom Sholtz basement-simply a Genius! Some equipment he invented is still being use by bands today! A perfectionist and his constant battles in court over rights was the reason their albums took so long to come out! He was extremely hardheaded. They were from Seacacus Mass. I moved to Boston when i was18- Aerosmith, Intermediate studios. I met a studio musician who was a Coke head, I’d give him 500 he’d hit the colleges come back & give me a1000 back and he would still have a half left. He’d hit so the schools and cut it and triple the money & we would go the studio & do the good stuff, I worked for a sound company and we’d hook up big arenas & one was the Garden we replaced with updated equipment, there’s was ancient but we got full access passes and could roam The whole building except offices & locker room. I watched Larry Bird & the insane experiences. I still lay back sometimes and bathe my mind in those beautiful memories of youth- Faniuel Hall, BU, MIT, Harvard, Mass University, they were smart girls but when they went out to party they went for it all! I mean deep. I won’t go in specifics but one trick before we went out we’d put XXX rated magazines on the table & they would act all tight and we knew not to make any sexual moves-but we would always say we’re out of beer let’s go out and get some and we would all leave. When we got back-well it can’t be described here but they are no different from men we had girls do things they probably never dreamed they would do. Reminder for you younger guys- make sure they’re school girls and not street girls. And even you left always have other magazines covering the nasty ones Don’t leave any cash out jewelry. Try it You’ll like it! But back to the band -I was a musician and can simply tell you they were ahead of their time. Long Time was my favorite-take me home tonight was my pick up girl song , More than a feeling is probably the best vocals to this day. The first album is immortal! Let me take you home tonight-baby now it’s alright! Long time loved the first guitar riff! I really think Sholtz was a psychopathic genius-don’t mean that in a bad way but anyone who knows psychopaths doesn’t mean they’re serial killers- they’re usually genius that are balanced on a razor’s edge of genius and crazy!

I could not believe it - but it's true. Boston is not in there! They put out the greatest 1st album of all time, with cuts still in heavy rotation, but no hall of fame? Look, every body loves Dolly Parton - she is a genius performer, a leader and a good person - but she's no rocker - but she's in the Hall of Fame (over her very principled objections - like I said, she's a good person.)
I remember hearing this Album when it first came out. Written, Produced and Recorded by one man in the basement of his house, created a rock masterpiece. Still rocks today.
There are very good reasons why Boylan was listed as co-producer on this record. Boylan pushed Tom to improve his drum and acoustic instrument tracks. The first such tracks that were submitted to Boylan were rejected by Boylan because they were too amateurish to use on the record. Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to tutor Tom on how to record drums and acoustic instruments. Boylan then made Tom do these tracks over again using what he learned. Boylan also recorded all of Brads vocals except the vocals for one song at Capital Studios Studio C. Boylan also recorded three songs recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record at The Record Plant LA and one of those songs Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad made it to the record. Brad also co wrote smokin' and albeit 30 years after the fact Tom finally gave credit to Brad and to a lesser extent Jim Masdea for all of the arrangement work that they did on the songs on this record. This is documented as fact in the liner notes of the 2006 Scholz (not Sony) remaster of the debut Boston record.

The lead guitar solo you hear on Long Time is 100% Barry not Tom. Barry plays electric rhythm on Foreplay. Fran plays bass on Foreplay. Barry plays electric rhythm and lead on Longtime. The huge power chords on Long Time are Barry too.

Minor nitpick: about the only thing Tom Scholz didn't do was the vocals. But that was probably a good thing -- there will never be another Brad Delp. Nobody before or since has had the ability to maintain full power (i.e., without going falsetto) as high as Brad Delp could. Even Freddie Mercury couldn't go that high at full power.
Some bands are better in the studio than they are live, some bands are better live than in the studio. Boston is one of those bands that is absolutely solid on both fronts. I'm so glad I got to see them live.
"More than a Feeling" is a great song, but it tends to get a bit over-played on many classic rock stations. However, when this one comes on, I always get excited -- I think my neighbors probably get excited too!
2:25 just feels like "Summer in a bottle". That opening guitar is just the essence of summer to me. I had this on 8 track, cruising to the beach on California Highway 101 with friends in my 1969 Mustang Fastback. Had no frickin' idea how good I had it. . .
Man you described it well, and bring those memories back to life... we didn't realize how good we had it compared to current times.. ...well, and being younger with that devil may care attitude was sweet too! ..I hate being old.. Oh well, what can ya do.. anyway, thanks for bringing back some good days man.. Peace, "Nic" AAA+ 👍👍👍
@@Phrostbyte007 Summer indeed brings me back to crusing in my 68 Camaro slmmin the gears with Boston blaring on the stero, really didn't know how good I had it!
Change the car to a Ford Galaxie 500 three on the tree klunker with Altec Lansing speakers loaded into the back, cruising over 17 to get to the ocean, and I'm right there with you 🤣😊‼️ Ok, the car was not nearly as cool as yours, but it was boat sized, with a bench front seat and had wing windows 🤣, and made driving other cars easy lol. Plus we could fit myself and a bunch of my sisters in it with our long 70s hair, parted down the middle, and looking hot lol! We would have probably challenged you to race, and, undoubtedly lost, but we would have had great fun doing it. Those were such innocent days. We had more fun just driving around, being seen and heard, than anyone ever has with video games or social media. We were outside, living real life.
Wow we share a story. I'm onl 14 but I've lo ed this band since I was 7. My dad introduced me to Brad delp. An SSS tier singer. To bad he took his life
Be glad you didn't.. Saw them at Cobo hall in Detroit .. Amazing songs, amazing talent, amazing ( for the time era) sound.. Unfortunately, basically nada for stage presence. Seriously.. the quietest concert ( for crowd response) that I'd ever attended, and I've seen most of the big name 70s' and 80s' acts. I can vividly remember going from Windsor Ontario, over to Detroit, to buy the Album, because it was available there first. Everyone came over to my place, and we played it repeatedly on my stereo. Knew I had to see them in concert. Living in Windsor. Ontario... Pre 911.. It was just a couple of bucks and a ten minute walk from the tunnel bus to Cobo Hall. There's a class of musicians called "studio musicians". Basically, these are musicians who can play anything! And, make it sound amazing!! Boston was like that. They were tight, sounded great, but with the hottest album of the time... They couldn't get Cobo hall off it's collective asses.. I've seem way less talented musicians just 'effin rock the venue, with balls, chutzpah, stage presence.... whatever you wanna call it.. Boston couldn't pull it off.. Not by a long shot. Don't get me wrong.. In an era before "auto tune", and lip syncing, and recorded bits.. They proved that they could cut it live.. They just couldn't get the place off it's collective ass. Not to take away from their musical talent... not at all.. Just... They failed to engage the audience. On the side of my Marshall, there's a sign that only I can see on stage.. It says .." Technical perfection isn't important, passion is.. I need to make you believe" Boston.. in concert, couldn't make anyone "believe".. Maybe they got better at it as the tour went on. But, that was my first hand take on it at Cobo Hall. Underrated playing? For sure.. The double leads on "Hitch a Ride", send chills down my spine to this day.
@@charles09361 Interesting, thanks for sharing! I know exactly what you mean. Only 30 but sometimes there have been shows I saw live and beforehand didn't even care for the music but the band MADE me ;). Energy is everything with live performances. You gotta woo the audience or don't even bother doing live shows.
Still have chills from the show I saw in the 70's when the organ pipes rose from behind the stage. It was surreal and the music still takes me to a good place ❤
@@steveanderson7536 I am constantly surprised by the number of people who are not able to hear the difference in the tone, technique, phrasing and legato when Barry is playing. It is sad that Barry rarely gets credit for what he did on this record. Too many people assume that Tom played all of the instrument tracks on this record due to the way that Tom has obfuscated the facts about who did what on this record and how this record came to be.
@@neechee5150 100% accurate. Also I saw a recent video from Rick Beato where he diagnosed this song. He specifically mentioned that the guitar solo was an example of how underrated Tom Scholz was. Umm, okay lol. No... it's an example of how unappreciated and underrated and unknown Barry was.
I was at the Pontiac Silverdome in 1978. We were 10ft side stage away. I snuck a bong in and my buddy brought an oz. We burned n bonged 10ft away listening to this so loud....my ears rang for 3 days. It was awesome to see them live so close!!! Loved it, still do.
That long B3 note before Longtime is just brilliant. The way it just hangs there and then the chord resolves into Tom's one-of-a-kind guitar solos. Pure bliss.
@staticsound1422 Actually Tom is playing a Hammond M3 on the first two records not a Hammond B3. The M3 according to Tom allows the player to emphasize a different series of harmonics than the B3 does
And there were no synthesizers. When you listen to it with that in mind, you begin to get the gist of the massive amount of detail Tom Scholz was implementing in his little basement in Watertown, Mass, to get this album done, and close to perfect as possible.. Incredible amount of work. This album is a timeless masterpiece.
What's the problem with synthesizers? There's really not much of a difference between an analog synthesizer and a Hammond organ. One uses an oscillator to produce the sound and the other a "tone generator".
@@Relayer6a Nothing wrong with them at all.. I'm actually a big fan of the ARP 2600 that was starting to catch on when this album was made. I was just pointing out that there was none on the album.
I sure know exactly how he never slept. Scholz was a mastermind of sound engineering hands down. I'm sure he was laying in bed and dozing off and said wait, I going to go tweak a couple tracks. Go down the Boston rabit hole. The 1976 "Boston" The self titled album peaked at number three on the Billboard chart and remained on the chart for 132 weeks. It went platinum 17 times in the United States and was the best-selling debut album in history.
Boston, Foreigner and Queen were the three rock bands that I listened to incessantly during my college years in the late 1970s. I got to see Queen @ MSG in New York, along with The Who and Elton John on other occasions. I regret that I didn't get to see Boston, but I think that the above-listed bands that I did see in concert were pretty good, especially The Who. The current generation can only see these great bands on tape on PBS. Better late than never.
When this song is 50 years old (25 August 2026 - in 3 years from now) it will still be as powerful. Old fans move on in time but new fans keep tuning in. I am more than proud and lucky enough to be around when this "concept" album was released. Granted, when I first heard the song it was on a less than acceptable player with a poor excuse for speakers - remedied within 3 moths with a superior sound system that was able to do justice to the instrumentation. This album is now a classic, bless Boston.

I really think Sholtz was a psychopathic genius-don’t mean that in a bad way but anyone who knows psychopaths doesn’t mean they’re serial killers- they’re usually genius that are balanced on a razor’s edge of genius and crazy!

thay didn't play the records co game ..... should still be there tho.
Wow didn't know they were not in . In my book one of leaders of the late 70s rock era
Very true. Madonna and Run DMC are in hall of fame but no Boston or Ted Nugent shows the Hall has become irrelevant
And Sheryl Crow is!! Sacrilege!!!

I remember hearing this Album when it first came out. Written, Produced and Recorded by one man in the basement of his house, created a rock masterpiece. Still rocks today.
I had the album… love❤️

Had no idea wow . Thanks
AND in his spare time, he had a day job too.
Some bands are better in the studio than they are live, some bands are better live than in the studio. Boston is one of those bands that is absolutely solid on both fronts. I'm so glad I got to see them live.
Saw them live on their first tour! Incredible!
NICE 🖒🎸🎶
We saw them at a venue a couple of years ago and Tom came out before the rest of the band to do a solid check on his guitars it was pretty crazy 💖‼️

I’m 72 and this song is still in my top 10. How I wish I’d seen them in concert.
I need to make you believe"
Boston.. in concert, couldn't make anyone "believe"..
3:58-4:14 is one of the most sublime moments of guitar mastery ever.
This was a rare instance that Barry was allowed to show his chops.

The M3 according to Tom allows the player to emphasize a different series of harmonics than the B3 does
Easy to play too..
Barry did the tougher stuff w Boston. Tom was the vision and the control freak.@@steveanderson7536

My sentiments exactly.
We will probably never hear music produced of this caliber ever again,
