- Learn about the amazing heritage of this city, but also discover how the Gentile God-fearers were now being excluded from their local synagogues and how God was going to reward his faithful believers.
Notes from the teaching.
The city was named for Attalus II Philadelphus, the Attalid king of Pergamum from 159 to 138 B.C.E., whose loyalty to his brother Eumenes II Soter, who preceded him as king (r. 197-159 B.C.E.), earned him the nickname “Philadelphus,” meaning “brotherly love.
Rather than usurp the reign and authority of his brother-when occasion and encouragement to do so was present-he remained loyal. And so the city perpetuated his honorary title “Philadelphus.”

The word is tested - enemy tries to snatch it away. Pressure of life causes many to let go - but good soil are people who hold on to the seed.
Story of seed in garage - nothing wrong with the seed. But the soil...! Soil in Philadelphia good, they held onto the word and weren’t polluted or distracted by the world

Enemy temptation is short term gain

They will worship before your feet
The thought is of vindication before self-righteous “spiritual” persecutors. God promises that the church in Philadelphia will be vindicated before their persecutors.
Pay homage, bow down to. Like dog licking masters hand. Whereas you have been despised and outcast - rejected by romans and society as atheists, rejected by jews as not jewish enough - i have chosen you and will exalt you.
It surprised peter that God chose Cornelius, and Jesus spoke of people from east and west sitting with Abraham in the kingdom to come - it was shocking.
Biblically speaking - Israel is central, not the church. They have the covenants, the fathers, the law, Jesus - everything! But God is grafting us in - surprising everyone! But we need to be humble - it is by his grace we are grafted in contrary to nature - and these will be brought back to their natural connection with God.

God set his love on the Jews... even though they were the least. God has also set his love on these god fearing gentiles who were being despised by some in the Jewish community. They will know that i have loved you...
Hour of trial
1 week = 7 years of tribulation. Then 1 hour is 15 Days.
Hour of trial on whole world
Has been taken to mean the whole church kept from the whole tribulation and centre of rapture teaching. Should be careful not to take a verse written to one church and make it centre of a doctrine for all churches - just like Synagogue of satan does not describe all jews for all time, so this deliverance from trial isn’t necessarily a promise to the whole church to escape the tribulation.

Is it possible that we do not understand that we are really a part of Israel, and the jews are also one part of the 12 tribes of Israel
Good question - the Bible does teach us that there will be people from every tongue, tribe and nation before the throne worshipping our Saviour (Rev 7:9). In other words this crowd will include people from the 12 tribes and people from every other people group on earth. Yes we are grafted into Israel, but we do maintain our own identity and nationality, as do the Israelites in fulfilment of this verse
