You should really consider doing a podcast. Know you might be quite busy but even if it's a once a month thing a lot of us would appreciate. Nonetheless big up Akala.

I don't even need to hear your review, I loved this book enough to attend a talk with the author years ago. Every person within the UK should read this book.

Yes but there are classes of white people too, it's called inter-sectioning. Historically Irish people have been treated as if they are not white.

S H I am Irish so I am aware of that. Its just how he phrased it seemed like he meant now in this day they arent white

I am Irish also second generation. And yes we're white but due to inter-sectioning historically we haven't been classed with the same privileges as other white people. The same can be said now for the Polish & Romanian - white but still face a lot of racism in the UK. I think that is what he meant by his articulation.

S H interesting. But who are polish and romanians facing racism from if they are white? Wouldnt that be something else other than racism if we are white? 2nd generation... Can you elaborate?

From white people themselves and also other non white people this is why it's called "inter-sectioning" in sociology theory. Because even within white collective we have categorisations and classes within that structure. Generally speaking taking the Eastern European examples they are seen as "stealing jobs" and "immigrants" by white British people and white Irish people that's very key here. When Romanian was invited to join the the EU and therefore many emigrated they were met with vast resistance and racism within our country and Ireland itself. And understand your point that some may see it as discrimination rather than racism, but then you could say black people cannot be racist to other black people. However we see within the black community people hold lighter skin people to higher standards and darker skin seen as a negative. This is from black people themselves but does that stop it being racism? That's the question. Interesting discussion - thanks!
