My thoughts on the movie: The mind is a complicated machine ... When dying we see a man "fade away" or faint in his last moment. If he fades away there are more chances of a shut down (that is death). Hence, paramedics or any medical professional present at the scene. Try to keep the victim "Awake" by usually saying "stay with me," (hence the name: "STAY").... So this is what was happening ... Henry was dying slowly his mind was shutting down, however, the life in him was trying to frantically cope up with the situation. As he was fading he was loosing consciousness, and meanwhile his mind was picking up the voices and faint visuals around him as he lay and trying to make sense of it. However, as he was not in his Normal consciousness his mind was making up a story like it happens when we "dream" ... The movie was that "dream" or the jumbled up fragments of Henry's last thoughts.
It was a good concept. We often see a fainting man. We may not often see a dying man but we know how a dying man reacts/behaves. This movie has dared to explore the other side of the perspective. I think it was cool. So there!

@@RelxpseGames maybe it's more than that....like ...could the film be depicting a small portion of an infinite loop, which is of reality? Could that be?

I see the movie as Henry having a dream similar to when you have a high fever very sick and slipping in and out of sleep and having fever dreams. He's awake experiencing everything going on but sort of dreaming at the same time. His mind was trying to make sense of it all but he was in a very confused state and his brain made up a story. The visuals of the movie and the way it was filmed actually feels a lot like you're dreaming when you're watching it. Truly a work of art. Can't believe nobody ever talks about this film. This is everything a good psychological thriller should be.

The Problem is that Plot Twists where very overused in Movies since M. Night Shalabingbongs The six Sense took off. And while it inspired a lot of great Twists like in "The Others" it felt kinda forced in Movies like "Hide and Seek".
Critics were probably pissed because it was just another "it was all in his head" twists and they didnt saw the bigger Picture.
Competent Critics like Roger Ebert understood the wider Picture of the Film and gave it 3,5 of 4 but as we all know most of the Movie Critics are not really qualified for the job theire doing.

I interpreted it as all the main characters being ghosts that don't quite realize they're ghosts a la Sixth Sense (Henry and his parents and girlfriend, and Sam and Lila). Henry's parents and girlfriend died in the car crash and he nearly did too and maybe barely survived but then later committed suicide from survivor's guilt. He's reenacting that limbo in the movie as a ghost. Lila's backup razor suicide was successful. After the trauma of being at Henry's crash, then not being able to save Lila either, Sam snapped and breaks down and maybe killed himself too by pill overdose? Henry and Sam ghosts go through this movie with their ghost traumas paralleling and bouncing off each other.
It's a movie about loss and being lost. Trauma, survivor's guilt, grief, limbo, connection, etc.
That was my interpretation anyway. I want that to be the truth because it's the most fascinating to me.

Why does Sam have flashbacks of what happened in Henry's dream when he asks Layla for coffee? Also, when Henry is dead lying on the gurney, why does he suddenly have one eye color of himself and one eye color of Sam?

What are those flashes that Sam sees when he asks Laila out for coffee?
Henry is proclaimed dead (no more pulse) but his brain cells are still dying away. Those flashes when Sam asks Laila for coffee are still what is happening in Henry’s head. Those are the last few flashes based on Sam asking Laila out.
So yeah, that’s how the cookie crumbles. I think it was a pretty good film directed by Marc Forster

    What if he DIDN'T DIE?
Notice the effects on the final scene, similar to the scene where he "kills himself" to "wake up".
Maybe the whole dreamworld occurs WHILE he passed out! This can explain the "Henry, stay with me" phone calls, voices and characters too, maybe he used the sounds and characters he heard before passing out in his dreamworld.
"Why does Sam have flashbacks in the final scene?" This can be explained when he passed out, the whole dreamworld starts SOON BEFORE!
Maybe i overthought it, i don't know, i just know that this movie is a Masterpiece!
I didn't saw a interpretation like mine nowhere, but i think it does make sense.

I feel like Sam killed himself and was talking to himself most of the time but at the same time he was traumatized by what he saw leading him to search more and learn about this boy, it explains most of the scenes also sam and henry what we see expect the accident are the same person, so sam propably has mental problems himself add to that what he saw traumatizes him and over the years of not being able to sleep due to nightmares and hearing voices it leads up to what we see in the movie

I noticed this as well. Many people walking together wearing the exact same outfits. Definitely purposeful by the director. Maybe because the whole thing is a dream, Henry’s mind was just filling in the blank spots in his world with generic people. There were only so many people on the bridge around him as he was dying, but he had to populate his entire dream world with them. Duplicates would have been necessary.

I loved this movie and you got from it almost exactly what I did. Only I thought the bulk of the movie takes place in the 12 mins of brain activity that happens before you die. Or is it 12 seconds. Either way...I was thinking that his heart stopped, lungs doing nothing but still had brain activity.

The film itself is great. Creative, and the actors were amazing. But, like you said, the twist feels somehow unecessary as it doesn't really explain or serves a meaning. In a way, this feels like a documentary of a dead man in a world where ghosts can direct movies. And this movie just feels like it's been directed by the dead man.

So there!

it's just another take on "it was all a dream", which is considered a cop out in most cinema titles.

One of the worst movies i've ever seen. Movie tried to be too clever but made a complete belly flop.

This movie is excellent. It's just not for those who don't like psychological movies

@@fireman9068 Far from it. Try Memento or The Machinist instead.
