I never roll through your reviews. I honestly believe your words are important and your playing is entertaining. I find this program relaxing and honest. Thank you.
Couldn’t agree more on the prices.. I own the Sherriton, the casino and the noel gallagher Riviera… I LOVE them, brilliant guitars and flawless, but, 800 quid should really be the Ceiling on Epiphone for me.. THAT one is an absolute beauty. Only issue for me is the weight.. my sherriton is fabulous but absolutely kills my bad back.
I think you enjoyed that particular guitar 🎸 quite a lot. It is a very nice one. I bought a Gibson ES339 to get out of my Strat comfort zone. Still not sold on it but it has no faults. I like the smaller almost Les Paul size body. Nice humbuckers.too. Don’t apologize for selling merchandise. It’s a part of making the channel work for you. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵⭐️
The guitar sounds great in this video Colin! I really appreciate the loops you do, they give a fabulous context to the guitars you review - particularly today with the Varitone settings. I find this more enjoyable and useful than many other channels where it is noodling with no song-type context. I dont have a problem with Epiphone guitars costing over a thousand quid in principle, it's just not often clear why some are and others not.
Don't worry about "getting on with it" Colin. I enjoy the lengthy conversational tone of your videos. I find them very relaxing. Right that said I'm off to buy a mug with a knob on.
Really good value guitars for the money, Colin. Craig, the guitar player in my band, Leavin’ Trunk turned up at our gig on Sunday with a cherry one. It sounded REALLY good! Craig’s a big fan of the “posh” Epis with the Gibson pickups. He also has a Firebird, a a Les Paul and one of the Joe Bonamassa 335s and they all sound fabulous. The Lester and the ‘Bird are all over our new album, which is out at the end of the month. (Cheeky plug!) PS: that can un the bridge pickup cavity is definitely the Varitone network.
27:06 - Happens to the best of them Col! Was messaging with a couple of cracking players yesterday who were trying to get some content out and both having ‘one of those days!’. You’re in good company. Lovely vid as ever. 👏🏻
Great score, Colin! I read that there are 30 MILLION guitars stored in Indonesian wharehouses. More guitars than players in the world! Allegedly. Should be a trend if any of that is true.
I spotted one of the same colour on Reverb for £1032, ouch, that seller is going to take a massive hit in order to sell that! Another is priced at £1399 and someone in Canada is trying to flog one for £1814.87, good luck with those mateys! I would much rather buy one of these at £799 than a Gibbo, once the cheap UK stock is sold out though I can see these selling for around the +1K mark, might be a good investment!
Not much to add, the other commenters have about said it all. Wow! I'd chuck half my 'collection' today for this beautiful Epiphone. Cheers Col and all from Dallas!
Also.. I like the way you play to let us know how the guitar sounds not the way you or your amp or your pedals sound. Going as fast as you can with a homogeneous sound is helpful in judging the guitar. KeepSmiling !
Great vid col, I couldn't wait though, I bought the cherry red model two weeks ago when I saw the price drop, I'm not familiar with schinichi I was sold on the specs, I share your sentiment in that it's a bloody great guitar and worth every penny, I love mine.
Great review Colin ! I was wondering when this would appear. I'm one of those who got this at full whack the minute it landed because I had serious Gas when they first issued out in Japan but hadn't bit the bullet. I love it and don't feel hard done by. I also have a Sheraton pro II and a NG riviera plus that Polara you sold on the channel. The sound on this is fab but I do feel the Pro II is a little easier on my back
I totally agree with you about the prices of some of these epiphone guitars. When you said a sip of tea from my knob mug I almost fell over laughing. I love this channel, by far the best TH-cam channel out there. I love the videos. Cheers
Cheers Colin, the highlight of my Friday afternoons! Really looking forward to finally seeing the Budget Tele( style! - for the Lawyers...) Shootout. Want one for a 5 string open G plaything - but don't tell the missus.
Loved the way you showed the versatility of the varitone, and gave us some insight into shinichi's bands. So many people poo poo the varitone in their reviews without even really giving it a crack. One of your best reviews Col but I could be bias as I really do want one! So pissed we get these in Australia! Thanks for the review and the GAS Col 🙂
Colin! My God, man! The 'let's play something' chapter put some early morning groove in my coffee time today! Awesome display of guitar mastery! Some of the best I've heard from you! I own the Emily Wolfe Sheraton Stealth, but I'm lusting after this one now! Damn! Awesome review! Thanks, man. From one old (70) rocker to another, cheers! Greetings from the USA!
I bought an Epiphone Les Paul custom with P90's and gig bag recently because it was on sa!e for $599 U.S. but it had shoddy fretwork. One fret was lifting so that the high e string would hang up on it if you did bends higher up the neck. I returned it. It would be worth it with good fret work but that seems to be lacking on Epiphone. I think it is intentional to drive people that want a higher quality guitar to buy Gibson. Sure, I could take the time to pound them down, recrown, and polish, but I'm not into doing that lately on a new guitar.
That bridge pickup, which I’m normally not a huge fan of, sounded phenomenal. Always been a neck pickup guy but bridge just seemed better sounding to these old ears.
I've always heard guitarist say the varitone was worthless but wanted to give one a try. I think there is definitely a place for it in my play book. Im going to buy one for my "vary last guitar purchase" (so i tell her). Crazy Link Ray riffs😂. Keep up the great work Colin
Ah, the eternal price dispute. As I've often said here, I have no problem with Epiphone charging whatever they want for their guitars. I don't believe they have some sort of a moral imperative to stick to a certain price range. I'll just choose whether to buy or not based on how much I value it versus the asking price. Paying a premium for a signature guitar is not for me, but if Epiphone can sell them to others that value them higher than I do, more power to them. As I also said, if too few people think they are worth the original asking price then just wait, they will come down. It's really a self curing problem. Having got that out of the way, that is one very attractive guitar. It's not one that I particularly desire though, I don't really care to have a Bigsby or Varitone, but that ebony fretboard makes me jealous. Thanks as always for the video.
It’s not about moral imperative, it’s about common sense. You can pick up a barely used Gibson for $1000-1500, so to 99% of people who know better paying that new for an Epiphone is foolish lol. Of course, you can’t get a used 355 for that, but I digress. Epiphones are good value guitars at $500-700 imo, but paying Gibson money for an Epi is odd behavior
I've got a 1995 Gibson Lucille that I bought from Manny's Music in NYC. The varitone "capacitor" that's under the pickup on this Epiphone is "mounted" with one double sided sticky foam tab (and that thing is HEAVY) inside the rear cavity; consequently it used rattle around inside, I even wrote to Gibson in 1996 and their reply was that I had a warranty in the United States and they'd "repair" it if I returned it to Manny's Music NYC. Consequently it's been wedged-in with a piece of polystyrene ever since, for what will be 30 years in 2025. I'd be interested to see how the placement of the capacitor will turn out in this guitar. And don't get me started on the scratchplate.
A really interesting review of the guitar, thank you, well worthwhile you putting some of your alternative/punkish playing back in, I have always enjoyed all your playing. Good test of the Varitone circuit that made a surprising difference. Re your comments on potentially ‘wandering’ no I do not think you need more structure in your verbal delivery, thanks.
Just to let you know, Colin, that when you suggest we get a cup of tea and some nibbles, I indeed do! Coffee in my case, and some biccies. Your vids fall nicely on Fri evenings for me, and it's a pleasure to relax and and see what you have in store for us. The waffle is all part of it. Maybe don't be in too much of a rush to become overly slick :-)
I love the waffling so please don't stop. The more waffle the longer I get to chill watching. I would love you to do a deep dive on the gretsch g2210 that you looked at briefly in the early days of the channel. Or a gretsch g2215 with the humbucker/P90 combo. You can pick them up used for 200 squids.
I’ve been waiting on your video to come and gassing out about getting it. Originally I was looking at an older epiphone Sheraton pro ii always liked the fact they are original to epiphone but then this guitar popped up. 300 pound more but it’s got an Gibson gear a case a bigsby and the vib Thank you for your review this. Can I ask how do the Gibson pickups stack up gained the ep es335. I was reading somewhere that epiphone based epiphone classic pro pickups on the 57s. Cheers
Yes I think the alnico classic pros are based on the 57's... so probs not a whole load in it but 'mentally' they give you the edge just knowing they are the real ones and we are fickle like that! 😆🤷♂️
I won't even look at an epiphone for anything over 599 usd. And 599 barely gets you any epiphone these days as it is so it kind of alienates the potential customer from even considering. I feel a lot of people are in my same line of thinking. Beautiful guitars but hardly worth the money they ask now when there's alternatives occupying there previous price points, at similar cost and build.
you're right dude! hard to pay more than 1000 bucks for an epi. but this one at 799 it's a kind of no brainer. unfortunately i'm not living in UK. you should try the coronet and crestwood custom. i think they are "fantasdish" guitars (not only for the price) and the best epi deal actually. i luckily get an 150th anniversary wilshire for 498 bucks brand new instead of 999. i didn't expect for a so good guitar. be kind, take care, cheers!
Hi Colin! The music shops say that's a Bigsby B70 but it looks like a B700 to me. The B700 has two separate black painted sections, the B70 only has one. From what I've read, the B7 is made in the USA, the B70 is Korean and the B700 is Chinese. Is one better than the others? That's an argument for another day!
Another great vid Colin, can tell you enjoyed the guitar. Its a cool looking guitar, but i think Epiphone are finding out that things are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. Thanks for posting and please dont stop waffleing,
Great mix with the cutting channel. Honestly kind of reminded me of a bluesy clash remake. It definitely sounds great to me. I swear that other bit sounded like Social Distortion's Mommy's Little Monster ...Haven't heard that in forever.
Hi Col, probably not my style of guitar but (remember everything before the “but” doesn’t count for sh!t) I thought it sounded fantastic. Really enjoyed your playing today in my new Guitaristas shirt!
She looks good. She sounds great. Unfortunately, you admit yourself that you are a creature of habit... and your experiences with ES guitars tell me that it will only be a short-term resident of SarfEnd. Hard to imagine that any of your followers would think poorly of you for selling Merch - the odd mention of your store is a small price to pay for your continued independence. Looking forward to getting my t-shirts!
I’m not sure if you sold yours and I hate to add to your GAS. A seller on reverb Franklin guitar works has the Joe Strummer Tele on close out for $1100 and change. They have a few. They are all NIB. Just no factory warranty. Great video today Colin. Love your Channel!
Another great review. Over here in the USA they’re still $1200. - $1300. You can’t buy a 355 for less than that new. For $800 ypu get a used one. I guess they figure that with the Gibson selling for ridiculous amounts that they can get away with it.
Anderton's don't stock these, though they have the (Bigsby-less) Dave Grohl signature still at the full £1,249. What surprised me most, however, was the price of Epiphone Firebirds. They have Firebird V's (2 pickups + maestro vibrola) in stock at £1,549 and Firebird I's (1 pickup, no vibrola) on pre-order at £1,099. Back in early 2020 I happened across a music shop in Wembley that had a brand new Gibson Firebird on clearance at £1,300, which I passed up! Furthermore, the 2020 Epiphone Firebird release, which came out about six months later, was priced in the US at $599 (as were the Explorer and Flying V released at the same time,) whilst the Gibson, if you could still find it in 2020, had an RRP of $2,299. The Epi even had traditional neck-thru construction. You bought one and reviewed it in late 2022, at which time you said that the UK RRP was £599. So what happened? Does the new Epiphone Firebird V cost two and a half times as much as the 2020 model Firebird because it has a maestro vibrola where the old one had a stopbar tailpiece? The price of Epiphone signature models is at least in part justified because they come with a hardshell case but given that an Epiphone hardshell case can be had for £130, where does the other 800 quid of the Firebird's price come from? (Anderton's website doesn't even state whether these Epi Firebirds come with one or not.) Make it make sense.
Colin I look forward ot your videos every Friday. First thing I watch before I start my work day. Keep up the good work and seel as much merch as you need to. One thing though. You only go up to 2X. Some of us Americans are too big for that. May want to add 3X to your sizes.
Colin, you've made a spelling mistakein the guitar's name: Shinichi Ubakata should be Ubukata I think. couldn't find any for sale online that's how I found out... not because I have any clue of who he is. Maybe change the spelling for more views, not sure if it makes a difference, just thought I should let you know... Cheers and thanks for all your hard work!
Hi Colin worst guitar purchase I ever made Epiphone Lucille ! The varitone on that was awful ! Did alot of dough on that one. Tend to agree with Danish Pete mate. I will say though Gibson P/ups through Fender Amps are the holy grail ! You should try the East Coast G35 brilliant !🤥
Still high priced here in the U.S.. I'd rather buy a pre 2017 Squier Bullet or SE for cheap and mod the hell out of resulting in a killer guitar for not a lot. Plenty of cheap used Epiphones out in the wild also looking for a good home. Hands off the expensive stuff from all makers. Times are tough and money is tight. Just covering the essentials is an everyday struggle. Long live cheap guitars!
Epiphone seem to be pushing their average price point higher in the last couple of years, but it may backfire on them if they don't start adding more value. They've got new models well over $1000 USD with Indian Laurel fretboards, just as one example. Other budget brands under $1K are using Rosewood and Ebony.
Been eyeing one of these up for a while! Although I've already got a '97 Sheraton MIK, which is lovely, and several other electric guitars... always need more!!🤣
Lovely guitar mate! You were getting some cocked wah sounds via the whatsitcalled!! That 2nd loop cdve been the Clash or the Ruts, l cd hear Strummer or Owen snarling over that easily.. She's a looker!! I hate fast cars too!!
Right, I'm on Fuerteventura with the wife, she's sun bathing and I get some peace in the shade watching youtube videos, it's a win win situation until, someone posts a video of a deal that's too good to be true, of a superb guitar, and guess what GAS kicks in and all of a sudden I've spent £800😂😂😂
I never roll through your reviews. I honestly believe your words are important and your playing is entertaining. I find this program relaxing and honest. Thank you.
Your videos are real and that's what I like. Scripted is not real. And I love your playing Lord Colin

I have a Epi Sheraton and yes they are heavy! But it sounds great!
A Witchat Knob mug? Sigh. You got me, Col, I can't resist that. I've ordered one.
😆👍🙏
Yep...Count me in on that one as well😎👍👍

Thanks for adding Buzzcocks back in, that's what I'm here for!! 😆 .. sounded great.
Col always keeps his Promises!
I love Fast Cars.. Or do I hate them?

The guitar sounds great in this video Colin!
I really appreciate the loops you do, they give a fabulous context to the guitars you review - particularly today with the Varitone settings. I find this more enjoyable and useful than many other channels where it is noodling with no song-type context.

Ok, got my Guitaristas shirt. Thanks for your channel!
Don't worry about "getting on with it" Colin. I enjoy the lengthy conversational tone of your videos. I find them very relaxing. Right that said I'm off to buy a mug with a knob on.

Very cool Epiphone and as usual great review, thank you Colin
Great score, Colin! I read that there are 30 MILLION guitars stored in Indonesian wharehouses. More guitars than players in the world! Allegedly. Should be a trend if any of that is true.
I spotted one of the same colour on Reverb for £1032, ouch, that seller is going to take a massive hit in order to sell that!

I love being part of the Guitaristas community. Ordered a t-shirt a week ago. Cheers from NYC!
Those Pups sound great in that guitar! 👌
Still the best youtube channel hands down. Absolutely loved the playing this week too. Good on ya!
Your the best on TH-cam , and I can’t wait for the next Friday
Colin, I rather like the blithering!😊 plus, the nob action!
What a lot of guitar!!! Golden era for guitar buying. Left handed??
Not much to add, the other commenters have about said it all. Wow! I'd chuck half my 'collection' today for this beautiful Epiphone. Cheers Col and all from Dallas!

"Isn't " is what I ment.😅
Another beauty. Great look and tones. I am sure that more than a few Christmas bonuses will be spent on these.
Great vid col, I couldn't wait though, I bought the cherry red model two weeks ago when I saw the price drop, I'm not familiar with schinichi I was sold on the specs, I share your sentiment in that it's a bloody great guitar and worth every penny, I love mine.

This one definitely a cut above 👌
Gibson 57 classic pick ups retailing on Gibson for£249…..the rest is a lot of guitar for the balance of £550. Great review as usual Colin😊
Guitars aren’t screwdrivers though
I totally agree with you about the prices of some of these epiphone guitars. When you said a sip of tea from my knob mug I almost fell over laughing. I love this channel, by far the best TH-cam channel out there. I love the videos. Cheers

I got both the Coronet and Crestwood custom when they were released and still have them! 😁👍... reviews are on here somewhere 🔥
I like that one Col. If I didn't already have an Eastman and an Epiphone 335 already I might buy one. The Eastman is a fab instrument to be honest.
It’s 6:30 in the AM and already a good day. Thanks Colin, good jam for my biscuits. Enjoy your day sir.

"There's a limit to what a man's prepared to pay for an Epiphone" surely is a Guitaristas merchandise item.
I’m not sure if you sold yours and I hate to add to your GAS. A seller on reverb Franklin guitar works has the Joe Strummer Tele on close out for $1100 and change. They have a few. They are all NIB. Just no factory warranty. Great video today Colin. Love your Channel!
Thanks. Another cracking video.
🌟 Thanks Michael that's appreciated! 😁🙏
Great review Cole. Plenty of great tones in this one. By the way, who do you recommend for supplying merch? Cheers.
I’m doing this all myself rather than use a third party supplier… Will let you know if I recommend it!
Nice to hear ‘Boredom’ get an airing.
Great video as always Col I've got 4 epiphones casino swingster crestwood and Wiltshire all great guitars
Being added... make sure you join the merch site mailing list for notifications.
Cheers.... and I checked that multiple times and still didn't notice! 🤣🤦♂️
Cheers
Good looking and sounding bit of kit, Colin
Cool guitar, love bigsby's. I'm often tempted by large discounts.
That guitar is beautiful in black, and 57 Classics are my favorite humbucker. I have them in my Epi Les Paul. Cheers 🎸
Another great Epi, tempted!!! 👍
22:45 is the look of a man happy with what he is doing.
Lovely presentation
I like it. Yes 799.00 is a much better price.
A big discount is always a better price. 😊 Plenty Black Friday deals from GG at the moment btw.
Come on Col give it some bollocks lad!
No 6 has a very Clash tone to it when you dig in!
Sounds great 👍
Gibson 57 classics are my all time favourite pick-ups. This is a complete steal new at £799
The first cup of coffee with Colin. Not paying proper money is as good as the first sip..
£799 that makes it nearly 400 quid away from how much it is worth
Harsh...but probably true 😂😂😂
Still high priced here in the U.S.. I'd rather buy a pre 2017 Squier Bullet or SE for cheap and mod the hell out of resulting in a killer guitar for not a lot. Plenty of cheap used Epiphones out in the wild also looking for a good home. Hands off the expensive stuff from all makers. Times are tough and money is tight. Just covering the essentials is an everyday struggle. Long live cheap guitars!
By eck Colin… I’m thinking maybe a “Colin’s special hammer” would make a wonderful addition to the merch?…
Lovin my Guitaristas mug by the way…
Oooh you mean my own Guitaristas Guitar Tool Kit? 😂 Cheers man!!
Great price. Im still interested in the 63 SG Custom, but its only dropped by £100.
Keep looking someone will have a deal before long.... I am hoping!! 😆
Epiphone seem to be pushing their average price point higher in the last couple of years, but it may backfire on them if they don't start adding more value. They've got new models well over $1000 USD with Indian Laurel fretboards, just as one example. Other budget brands under $1K are using Rosewood and Ebony.
Wildkats are 300 online. Keep on pickin' Cowkidz
No bigsby though. But that's a lot for one.
I got a ‘22 Sheraton II pro in a trade with some cash and I can’t believe how good it is.
Really enjoyed this one, Col…
As ever!!! Cheers from Berkeley, California!!!
Fun Fact: The ES-series Gibbos were named after their original retail price.
Been eyeing one of these up for a while! Although I've already got a '97 Sheraton MIK, which is lovely, and several other electric guitars... always need more!!🤣
Got some bites and a wee dram so here we go. Love it!
What a beauty of guitar
I had the epiphone bb king, but thought it would be better with a bigsby, this model scratches the itch in that respect being the E355 model
Lovely guitar mate!
You were getting some cocked wah sounds via the whatsitcalled!!
That 2nd loop cdve been the Clash or the Ruts, l cd hear Strummer or Owen snarling over that easily..
She's a looker!!
I hate fast cars too!!
Yeah that was definitely yet unintentionally a clash influenced groove! 🙌
Nice one... and I think you now deserve a cold beer! 😂👍
