PENZANCE HELICOPTERS NEW PASSENGER SERVICE TO ISLES OF SCILLY

After 8 years the UK’s unique schedule helicopter service between Penzance and The Isles of Scilly has started again.
The Penzance Heliport is operated under the umbrella of Sloane Helicopters who are based at Sywell near Northhampton. The passenger ferry service started on Tuesday 17th March 2020 with the first fifteen-minute flight from the mainland to the sub-tropical islands 38 miles away.
Travel writer Geoff Moore was the first passenger on the new service and was one of the last passengers when the last service operated by BIH (British International Helicopters) flew back from the islands back to Penzance for the very last time in October 2012.
He was presented with a bottle of champagne by the Managing Director Jeremy Awenat of Sloane Helicopters just before take-off from the brand-new Penzance Heliport.
The year-round service in normal times could operate up to 17 flights a day from Monday to Saturday. The heliport received European funding of around £1.8m. The owner of Tresco Estate Robert Dorrien-Smith has been one of the key investors in the project he lives on Tresco which is the second largest island in the group.
Passengers will be allowed to travel with up to 20Kgs of luggage but they have to use soft rather than hard cased bags.

My wife and i have been several times on the old helicoptors,......we were going on the new ones last year but had to cancel due to covid....but we hope to go again ASAP its a lovely place to go and well worth the trip......highly recommended.

What happened to the proper helicopter? It looks like this one fits a fraction of the number of people on it.

So is this a new landing/take-off site or did they just renovate the old heliport ?

It's a brand new site but a few hundred yards from the old one or Where Sainsburys are now !

It wasn't the first though, Steamship Company started an ill-fated service in the previous year.

Yes indeed, but in the current situation its going to a while before this one can get going properly.

Last time I flew Penzance to Scilly Isles in 1998 it was on a big Sikorsky S61
