- Former ITV news anchor Carol Barnes pays her former colleague, Ed Mitchell a surprise visit as she charts the former tv news anchor fall into alcoholism and gambling addiction. The cameras follow Mitchell as he struggles to survive on the streets of Brighton before eventually accepting an offer of rehab at the Priory. Filmed with Mitchell over the Christmas period 2007.

Alcoholism isn't a joke. I was one for about 25 years. A very heavy drinker. I couldn't do anything without a drink. I woke up one day and just didn't go to the fridge. I hadn't realized that that was a huge step. I made it through the day and I figured I'd try and see if I could do 2 days. I did it. The rest is history. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm glad it did and I know I'm lucky. I didn't give up alcohol, but it no longer has a hold of me. I just drink when I feel like it and I rarely feel like it anymore. It's not my best friend anymore. I can drink 1 beer and stop. All the years that alcohol was my buddy, my buddy who loved to see me get in trouble and do stupid things constantly is barely an acquaintance anymore in my life. I don't need it anymore and rarely even want it anymore.
Wow, that's incredible. Congratulations! When I went through withdrawal I really needed to get medication in order to even be able to stand on my legs the first two days and not get a seizure or delirium. My brain was on tilt, so I would see light flashes, be startled by anything and shake like a vibrator. Apparently your brain is not sensitive to that, or maybe your daily alcohol intake wasn't sky high (although I doubt that). But still, if you happen to find yourself in that situation again, I strongly advice you to go to a doctor first. The more often someone withdraws, the more dangerous it becomes.

Ed's stay at the Priory Hospital at Roehampton worked. Ed went on to write a best-selling book about his experiences 'From Headlines to Hard Times', a detailed record of life in a dark place. Ed has apparently since relapsed, but has managed to remain more sober than not.
Ed is still alive and doing well. Carol Barnes died shortly after filming this from a stroke. Life is very odd sometimes.

@@THO07003663 well if you're a alcoholic, you dont want to end how I have with alcohol neuropathy in both arms and hands. Theres no cure and feels like your arms/hands are on constant fire. Please stop drinking if anyone reads this it's just not worth the immense gamble on all the negative things how alcohol can destroy you and others.

12:58 hit me so hard when he broke down after words of wisdom.. probably shouldnt have been drunk watching this but i wouldve been anyway as im an alcoholic also. Hes a beautiful man. I hope you are remaining well Ed Mitchell.

but i think he never looked like a horrible drunk, he looked surprisingly good for someone who heavily abused alcohol for years.
Amazing isn't it? Even sleeping rough he is still handsome.
Some people just have better genetics than others and can look ok on the outside. Yet on the inside their organs are screaming. It's actually pretty dangerous as symptoms can show later compared to others.
@@kyleB061 you are right. I had a girlfriend who had a serious drinking problem, she was a lawyer and got away with it for awhile. She always looked great, but of course, she got busted. Had to do several rehabs and then had t o pro bono legal work for her community service. Bet she is still drinking unfortunately.

@@72megasnoopy Don't you ever wonder sometimes, about the highly arbitrary nature of God's mercy? I always wonder how Christians always seem to bypass this, when praising his great qualities. Is it a form of cognitive dissonance, that comes with a religious mind or upbringing? or is it simply true, as many studies have suggested, that religious people are simply not too bright?
The courage it took to provide this transparency can be life changing. For that I thank him…
Unless a person has experienced an addiction, he/she can never understand why someone abuses drugs/alcohol. Often the abuser doesn't know why. It's a very complex and frustrating issue. My late father drank himself into the grave. Then, my younger brother was well on his way to an early grave abusing alcohol and prescription medications, until he started having run-ins with the law.
I managed to kick a gambling addiction that lasted from the age of about 10 until I was 30... You need an epiphany moment. Some people never get there. Others, like myself, take a long hard look at themselves and realise and accept their true nature.. No point in pretending if you change yourself or move house things will work out. They don't. People with addictions are just hiding from themselves...
in a strange way, TH-cam saves me from the booze. All these documentaries about alcoholism is enough to keep you on the straight and narrow.

wow this is really a tough journey for him. In AA, people have experiences that was tough; once they start drinking, they can't stop. even for me can be tough at times...

Melanie, I watched Brian Davis' story - the ending was just devastating, such a waste of huge potential and talent.
Hi Lynette, Yes, such a tragic end but sadly not an unexpected one. I think he had mental health issues and feel he wouldn't have knowingly lived in such chaos and squalor otherwise, though whilst watching, a little part of me wondered if he was just blinkered and selfish. He appeared to be living in the past poor man, constantly playing his records and going through his past assignments. Sadly, I found Rain in my Heart even more tragic!

Because of Alcoholics Anonymous, these kinds of stories are fairly common. Trust restored, families restored, health restored, morals restored, finances restored, etc, etc.

How heartbreaking is this? I wonder if alcohol was a part of his family background? Did he go treatment at the onset of his problem?
I do think that some people have something in their biology that makes them have the stamina to keep drinking, I'm 46 and no matter how many times a week I've gone out in the past I've never been addicted or had a craving for it,I've not had any alcohol for over a year,not for any reason but just because of the first lockdown coz of c vid and I didn't go back once they opened

me too....the one above seems a little contrived compaired to the Brian Davis story.
Ed was an alcoholic like Brian except Brian also suffered from mental illness.
Brian's Story
It's great that he got that offer of recovery. However he was clearly a privaliged man to begin with. And private support from the priory with the garaunteed job at the end of it, would probably be a better fit for someone who had little to begin with
He lost his job, his family and was about to die. Hope on earth is that privileged. Some guy came to his rescue but that wasn't planned. Get off it.

Why did the film not focus on his gambling? Earning that kind of money, alcohol could not have cost all his income. Gambling must have taken most. Gambling is more harmful than alcohol.
It sounded like he was going to say “ you no longer exist as a real woman.”.
Wondered what happened to carol Barnes...her daughter died in 2004 she was stopped being a magistrate because of a drink driving conviction not long after her daughter died..whilst she was dying in hospital her home was burgled...I do remember carol Barnes when I was a kid from the late 70s on ITN news...also ed he was always the let's go to ed live in Tel Aviv,bloke....
She died of a stroke in 2008, sadly

Did you miss the part about them being 250,000 in debt because of his drinking. They sold the home to try and pay off the debt and stave off bankruptcy. There is no way she could get a job to pay the mortgage and debt and family expenses. Don't blame the wife.

@@robertcarey8294 my dad was an alcoholic and he ruined our lives as children. I know he didn't mean to but he did, in every way, emotionally and financially. My mother divorced him and I thank her for that, that's what a real mother/women does! She tries to help but when someone doesn't want to be helped, you get out and bring yourself and your kids safety and stability. But you don't get that huh? Smf

Remembered Ed at ITN, also at TVC in studio N2 for the BBC Business Breakfast, he was an outstanding presenter.
He didn't look like the alcoholic we imagine....rotten complection...smelly...bedraggled.
He remained a gentleman from what I can ascertain from this documentary.
Strangely he seemed to become even more handsome and distinguished with age despite his destructive lifestyle.
I'm glad to see hes sober now and wish him endless good health happiness and wealth for many years to come

He was able to go from riches to rags and back to success bc ppl were willing to give him a chance. Imagine if everyone that cld help actually gave a homeless person the helping hand they needed. Obvi some ppl on the street dont really want to change but many do. Its hard to get a job with no address. With no job there's no shelter, food, clothing. Everyone shld keep this in mind the next time they're hiring. You cld be passing on the best person bc you judged their sitch. Maybe, head to local homeless shelter to post your job opening

I can understand him completely. I'm a recovering alcoholic and the best part of it was noticing that private life slowly merge with the normal life and no longer being private anymore. It's an amazing process and brings a smile to my face
My wife is an advanced alcoholic. The one thing you can't get help for, is an alcoholic in denial. All I can do is pay her bills and wait for the end.. At least this guy is honest about it. He knows he'll be dead soon and he doesn't seem too bothered... My wife lives in her own shite and looks like a vagrant. What can you do when someone simply doesn't give a toss about anything except drinking. Family, friends, all gone..
chris malcomson so sorry. I pray for you and your family. There is always hope that people seek help but unfortunately most have to hit rock bottom. AA works only if one is ready.

“What can you do”? You can “do” something for yourself, like attend Al-Anon. If you don’t gain some understanding of the reality of alcoholism, the drinker will always hold you hostage. I know this from experience.
I feel for you I really do because you are totally right. My mother is exactly the same, we are basically just waiting for her to die and in the process she's destroying everyone around her and I find it hard to understand such selfish behaviour. I hope your ok and things have improved somewhat for you and your wife.

I`ve always watched the European Business Channel on SKY in the late 80s although I was only in my mid teens. Really liked this guy. So sad what`s happened to him. Hope he`s better now. Wish him the best.
There are horrible prices you pay when famous. I would net his alcoholism is a huge result of this as well as early habits.
That channel became CNBC Europe in the 90s. I watched CNBC as a teen in the 2000s. I remember reading about Ed Mitchell's story, even though I had never seen him on EBN/CNBC and I watched this documentary. It was so sad what happened and I hope he's doing well now.

Must say, can't seem to think I've seen him in quite some time.
The cynic in me finds it hard to look at needlessly vérité-style docs like these without questioning the true motives of the producers and presenters. There are very few documentary film makers whose presence on camera aids the finished production. Plus, if the focus is supposed to be on the subject, time spent on presenters is surely pulling that focus.
There isn't just a single shot dedicated to the presenter, in some situations it's a dedicated camera.
It's a style called fly on the wall. There isn't a 3rd wall.
For someone who spent a long time on the streets, fucked his Wife off, lost jobs, lost houses, I find it hard to accept his silly immature humour. It's his Wife and family who paid the price for him drinking. I understand that he had a disease but it was them that had the diagnosis. Like any addition, it's a matter of choice, and he chose that path and what is sad is that those addicts take their families with them on their journey. We all have addictions but we have to put them in a box where they belong so we can operate on a daily basis. I know it sounds harsh but having known an addict who absolutely ruined his life, his family's lives forever and it's unforgivable.

Redeyedkiwi If I have a lot to say that's because a friend of 45 years life was dismantled by her selfish, gambling, womanising Husband, who for the sake of a drink and an afternoon in the Bookies neglected his Wife and Children to the point of them all being homeless. Even that didn't stop him, he stole the Child Benefit Book and enjoyed many days entertaining like minded people in the park. Nature interrupted with a spell in Hospital with liver disease, he came out and went straight back in the booze, he loved that and nothing and no one was as important to him than opening the next bottle. Meanwhile his WIfe dealt with the fallout protecting their Children, got on with her life. The Doctors saved his life and he threw it back at them, more than once, and by the way, I don't drink.
True, they become everyone else's task and sometimes I think that attention is part of what keeps them mired in the drug.
Mr October Yes, you certainly get someone's attention, they even blame the booze for their behaviour as if they weren't responsible and therefore allowed to cause havoc and pain to all and sundry. How is a drink more important that your Wife and Children. Having seen it for myself I have thought over the years that there are some Women who shouldn't have children, that goes for Men aswell, it's so selfish.

In this world we all have struggles, each of us individually. There is more out there than just this life and you must stay focused on the prize at the end. I currently deal with alcoholism, i have moments of clarity but its not enough to get me out of the cycle. Every day i fight but i always succumb to my vices.

I haven't got a lot of sympathy, and I'm somebody that had a severe drink problem for about 18 months which landed me with a very serious neurological condition, and if I hadn't stopped drinking about 8 months ago (prescribed medication were used by my alcohol team; that I had vitally ENGAGED with) there's a strong chance that I'd be in a care home now or: DEAD (And,that is NOT an exaggeration; and woe betide any fuc*er that 'comes at me' on here and says It IS. take that VERY seriously, before you 'Keyboard warrior' at ME, given what I've overcome) Now, what I had/what one MUST have to break through here is Bollocks, and mine were and are: HUGE. Mitchell should NEVER have reached the bare desperation levels that he did based on what he HAD and what he has worked so HARD to HAVE, even HAD. He is recovered today, however, and I'm thrilled for him. Had he been my brother though, I'd have given him the support and also the 'kick up the arse,' that he needed earlier. He should have displayed the bollocks that I did much EARLIER, than he did. This is erudite, and grammatically perfect (I've even spelled grammatically correctly: Twice, look!) and 8 months ago, I couldn't even SEE sufficiently, due to my, Nystagmus (involuntary bilateral eye movement, cause by severe Vitamin B deficiency) to enable me to even TYPE all of this. SO #innerstrengthonlyYOUcandoitmate. So, don't piss about, and get OFF the piss lively! x
