    Such a tune! The video is like a tribute to Andy Warhol - The balloons in the video are often said to be a symbol of innocence of youth, the video being set in the 70s - the balloons being popped and let go at the end, innocence of a simpler time before AIDS etc. is now lost.

    This is one of my favourite Madonna songs. It's so catchy and I love the 70's disco inspired video. You were talking about not knowing anything about her family. Although in the video she sings about getting advice about love from her mother sadly her mother died when Madonna was just 5 years old. Her dad later remarried and Madonna and her siblings didn't like her at all. Madonna's dad is now in his 90's. A video of Madonna's you missed watching but need to see is Oh Father. It shows her relationship with her father when she was a kid and her mother dying along with an adult Madonna and an abusive partner and the parallels with her father. We don't know the full situation but it's known that she had a difficult relationship with her father growing up. Plus the Father of the title also relates to Father as in a priest and her being brought up as a Catholic. It's a great song and video. She sings about her mother on her Like A Prayer album (that Oh Father is taken from) on a track called Promise To Try. It's very sad. Must have been such a horrible time for the family and little Madonna. Madonna had 7 brothers and sisters. I say had because sadly one of her brothers died last year (I think it was). Their father is an Italian-American and their mother was French-Canadian descent. Oh and yes, that was a couple of lines of Vogue that are cleverly incorporated into this song!

      I'm also going to ask that you listen to Oh Father and Promise To Try. Both are stunning. The Oh Father video will be better to react to before Bad Girl. They had the same director, and it's very clear with the similarities. Have fun with Erotica. It's a ride well worth taking. 😉😁 Can't wait for my fave album coming next, Bedtime Stories.

    Another great Madonna song. About the family, I know her mom died when Madonna was 5 and dad raised her with his next wife. I believe he is still living in his 90's. As for the 8 tracks, a staple in the 70's, then the cassette. We all had two boxes for each that went in the car. I had a portable - battery operated - 8 track player since my first car had only a cassette. The last 8 track I bought was Prince's Controversy album, surely before you were born, as that was 1981.

      Right on! I was born in '71 and have a stepbrother six years older than me. The first music we had, other than listening to the radio, was "KISS: Alive II" on 8-track! We also had "Alive" on vinyl and Ace Frehley's solo album on vinyl picture disc (remember those?!?) lol

    Lyrically, the song talks about sexual desire, though it has been argued that it is actually about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality, and yes it includes a reference to Madonna's single "Vogue"

    Lots of great appearances in this video! Udo Kier, Sofia Coppola, Debi Mazar, and Guy Oseary. And those are just the more mainstream people. But just about everyone in this video has some cult following.

    The song is about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality.
    The balloons symbolise freedom and letting go, being true to yourself.

  • @cedricwhitfield
    @cedricwhitfield ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It as been said many times that this song is about combatting societal pressure to deny ones sexual desires and ultimately deciding to live in your truth forgoing concern for the expectations of others. As if shes singing from the perspective of a gay male coming out and owning his sexual identity "never gonna hide it again...never gonna have to pretend" and it kind of makes sense to incorporate Vogue which was her boldest nod to underground gay culture in the 90's

    If you watch the video, you noticed that there are times when it was black and white, and there are colors. The black and white was a metaphor of her life, her journey or her destiny. The colors represent the reality.

  • @mavericklad1

    Was said in other comments but Madonna is playing Edie Sedgwick and the older guy is similar to Warhol, I think it parallels her own relationship with her dad and her constantly seeking his approval…. I think the balloons signify love and every encounter she has, they diminish somehow…. Just my take on it
