This time of year is always a challenge on the east coast of Florida but it felt good to get the Trophy Bluefish after not fishing for almost 3 months!
I have never liked them because generally they are very soft rods. However the 12ft Bigwater is a good budget surf rod for sharks but definitely don’t even think about the 15ft version for Shark fishing, the rod is to long and soft to effectively fight big sharks with. Several of my buddies have used the 12ft version for many years and have caught a lot of sharks!
The BG 4000, which we have on a 7ft heavy Shimano Teramar with 300 yds of 30lb Sufix 832. We never got the chance to use it this summer because the flat and calm conditions just never happened. So it will be going into action next year!
First blue I ever caught was with my dad. I was age 10? We were trolling off Seaside Beach in Bridgeport CT. I recall he was rigging with steel leader. When the blue hit that pole bent in half. My dad gave me the rod after he set drag and he said “that’s a big fish. It might be a shark. Just go easy.” After 20 min of that fish stripping line and me trying to pull it back I was tired. I remember my arm muscles burning. At that point I said to my dad “take it, take the pole dad!” He stepped up to the rod and pulled out his pocket knife and feigned that he was going to cut the line sayin “well if you can’t pull him in I’ll just cut him loose!” Oh man I was back in action!!! Finally my dad says “I see steel leader coming”. Next he whistles loud and says “oh my God!” He grabbed the leader and slung that bluefish aboard saying “teeth like sharks be very careful”. It weighed an honest to God 15 pounds. He said “Son. You just landed the biggest bluefish I have ever seen. You will likely never ever catch one that big again your whole life if you fish every day”. We pulled the hook and he let me ceremoniously drop him back in the drink and away he swam. We just sat there in the boat drifting. Engine off. Sun going down. Quiet. No words. He grabbed me and hugged me. Finally he said “Today will always be one of my favorite days fishing. Let’s go home.” We told my uncle later that week and he didn’t believe us. Nobody did. But we KNEW IT. Cuz we did it! That fish your wife pulled out had to be 12 pounds. Mine was girthier and a bit longer. Bluefish like that are just TANKS in the water. Best fighting fish pound for pound. Just so much fun. We used to catch a lot of them and my dad had a method for filleting them and he cut out the blood line and then we soaked them in lemon water for a couple days in the fridge. Mom cooked them with a mayonnaise baste on the grill. Many people say they taste bad. I remember a lot of good meals from them.
That is a very good story and the memory of that fish is obviously still fresh in your mind even after many years which is part of what fishing is all about! I do think you are right and Her Bluefish is closer to 12lbs than 10lbs. Thanks for sharing your experience catching a Monster Bluefish! and Thanks for Watching!!
Awesome video! Questions here..... The bluefish leader you use. What lb test 49 strand cable is that? The 4/0 gorilla hooks you use.. Are those the lights or the regular ones? What other baitfish species (besides bluefish) have you caught on the baitfish cable leader? Just wondering...
The leader is 480lb 49 strand cable and the hooks are Gamakatsu Octopus SE 4x strong. We use hook sizes from 4/0-10/0 and she has caught a 40 inch Redfish along with many smaller ones plus the Bluefish, Jacks, Sharks and Stingrays with her little “Bluefish Rigs” Thanks again for Watching!!
Bluefish that size in Florida are very rare! Thanks for Watching!!
Great to see yall out again. That was exciting.
Thanks! It felt good to finally get back to the beach after almost 3 months and She was definitely excited about her Trophy Bluefish!
Great catch, hope you're able to finish the year with more trips

Glad your back, any opinion on Ugly Stik Bigwater surf rods?

Thanks alot. What size BG reel would be a equivalent to your wife's bait rod setup?
