You missed something very critical though...you looked at the surface reconditioner as a metal working tool only. That's where it outperforms others the most is the fact that it can also be great for wood, fiberglass, and plastics....stuff that can easily be destroyed by an angle grinder.
@@IronHorseGarage Also, one other thing to take into consideration...the angle grinder strip disc only did one job....stripping. The surface conditioner did 2 jobs at once....stripping, PLUS a clean ready-to-go finish. No real metal worker is going to call a job complete with angle grinder streaks and stripes all over a project. So the time you clocked on the angle grinder would literally be 2-4 times longer after finishing passes to make it match the conditioner surface...unless we're just talking about something the size of a welding coupon or something small like that.
This is the comment I was looking for! As a 41 year-old, completely new welder (never too old to learn a new skill) I’m already tired of cleaning mill scale from drop with my angle grinder.
just bought the drum sander at HF for 109 bucks. did a test spot on a car frame and it is working incredibly. Fast and very clean. Very impressed. I cant see anyone buying the eastwood unit at 3x the price.
Honestly I think the drum has a better finish, on thin flat surfaces, pretty useless on most other surfaces, the disc is a lot more versatile for any surface, great video thanks, all the best to yous and your loved ones
So it’s literally called a Surface conditioning tool. Not a paint stripper. It can do both, but it’s for a different application imho. I want one for cleaning up metal and giving a smooth satin look. Not gonna be stripping paint. Nice video, guys. I love the commentary and music!
My first and most likely my only Harbor Freight power tool. I use it not to strip paint but to polish and grain stainless steel pipes, tubing and panels. Does a nice job putting or restoring grain
I’m a woodworker who uses mine restoring old tools. I like the scratch pattern better with the SCT (for example, on vintage handsaws, where you see the scratch pattern long term). As you guys show though, angle grinder is still very versatile and plenty for many (most?) applications.
I think you're missing the purpose of the drum style machine, it's to achieve consistent inline abrasions like satin finished stainless steel or aluminum, but can also strip paint as a plus.
That is not how it's marketed. Eastwoods version is marketed for stripping rust and paint. In our industry you don't want smooth shiny steel to lay paint over so that type of purpose is of no use to us.
@@IronHorseGarage Hi friend, it doesn't surprise me that they market it to the public that way, he'll they market grinding disc's for drills...lol. like I said "it can also strip paint as a plus", but its original design is for burnishing metals, my personal machine is a $1200.00 Metabo burnishing machine, but in the past I've also owned stationary machines for burnishing large panels. th-cam.com/users/shorts6wKPB_uPoP8?si=qspOJOUmRG5DbKWZ
I like the finished look of the metal with the drum , if there was no other body work to be done I think some Apoxy Primer could go on and be ready for paint .
Me personal I bought it for one purpose and that is to use it on furniture repair and restoration, I haven’t had any problems using it on wood, I have other grinders for metal stripping, Etc. Thanks for the review
Thanks for posting the comparison. At retail, I'd say it's definitely not a winner, but on sale, I could see adding it to my collection of tools. While I do work with metal, I also work with wood and could see this being helpful in some situations. Any recommendations on good strip discs? I don't think I saw a link to them in your affiliate links.
I'm glad you guys made this comparison video. I actually considered buying a drum sander from Eastwood. They Are heavier than the 4 inch grinder and don't appear to be that much faster.
Nice review. The harbor freight is priced kinda high. 90 day warranty for $150. Eastwood is $189, but there is a 10% coupon right now bringing it to $171 and has 3 year warranty. But eastwood only includes 120 grit drum.
Great comparison, I could see the use of both if you are running a body shop or have several body work projects . But for the weekend warrior I would go with the grinder and disc just to save money on more tools. Great video!
You are totally right. Looks fancy. Even a 6 inches velcro pad with 80 grit sandpaper work better and faster in most of the paints. Thanks for your demostration. Hope help others to make a good decision.
Thanks for the video as I am debating on almost what you used but I will be knocking down heavy surface rust (not scale). Well, I could by one, use it and return it if I dont like it. Then go back when they have their sidewalk sale and buy it at a cheaper price.....lol. Thanks again.
That was a great comparison. Can you imagine how slow it would be if it wasn’t the great Jason using it?!?! I think they both have their place. It would be interesting to test it on a horizon surface where the weight helps you and doesn’t fight you. You guys are awesome. It’s great to see Aaron in front of the camera more.
I bought the Eastwood one about a year or so back. was not impressed at all. major waste of money on my part and time. at least i can get the drums at Harbor Freight cheaper for it. thanks for the video now I'm just a bit more depressed than i was to begin with about buying it..lol
Yep, we probably should have done that, it could have an advantage in that aspect, but there will be more testing for sure!! Thank you very much for watching!
If the only thing you use it for is pant removal then yes but if you want to prep metal, polish it or even redo you stainless steel sink so it looks brand new then the surface drum sander is the way to go. Remember if every problem looks like a nail then the only tool you need is a hammer.
Would have liked to see you both swap tools and do it again. Looked like drumb tool was really only using the weight of the tool vs grinder really getting in there with a push. Curious about fatigue if you actually did the whole bed. Those grinder strip discs can work really well. Not a good sign the drums sander died so quick. I got it for I think 109 or 119 on coupon a month ago. I guess I better use it a bit to see if it will fail. I think both types will have a place. Thanks for the review!
Looks like both have advantages and disadvantages and both would work good together stripping a car to bare metal for example. It's seems to me that the angle grinder leaves a less consistent and uneven surface compared to the Bauer tool in my opinion and I wouldn't use it for the large flat areas.
Not very hot, but yes it can warp the steel no matter which tool you're using. You have to be careful and keep it moving so it's not in one area too long.
I would be curious to know how much heat is generated by each of them. Get one of those thermal guns and do a heat measurement while each of those things are stripping. 😉
Saw a review of the drum grinder using 40 grit and it ate right through the paint and rust instantly. Just saying. Its only a different way to grind is all. Plus the drum grinder has several speeds.
Grinder grinds and leaves deformities. Do this test on a car door then paint it, that's where you see the difference. Yeah you can grind on a box or tractor door but you wouldn't use it on something you want to look nice after you paint.
Great point. Just like anything the longer you hold something in place the more heat it generates. The stripping discs won't warp the steel as long as you keep them moving. Thank you very much for watching!

Take that grinder and come strip prep my wood deck. I want it ready to stain after you're done. 🤣 Also would love to see the quality paint job you get on that streaky surface after the grinder. Would also be fun watching you prep some fiberglass or plastic with the grinder. See we can all sh-t on various tools. Doesn't necessarily make it a bad tool. You tried it on one very specific application. Didn't really even prove the point, cause you'd still have to go over and smooth the finish with a bunch of passes if you want to lay a quality paint job down. So all depends on the use case. Hahaha! You should try working with him! And this tool is garbage.
What a fun comparison video! More expensive isn't always better. Great Video!!
Thank you sir! Just a gimmick as far as I see!!
I’m glad you showed us that drum sanders are a waste, of money.
Nothing but a gimmick.
What the fuck am I watching 🤣
Excellent question!
Swap users and repeat.
Jason is to cool to wear a mask? Lol 😆 i cant believe that thing already died 😡
That’s not a mask???
Safety third for him...yep the switch or something burnt up!
Not first
The first step is admitting you have a problem!
@@IronHorseGarage 😞😞😞
Hahaha haha!!
Four hour lifespan. Not good.
Not good at all.
The Bauer operator was not working the tool right better get a person that knows how to work with tools.
The commenter always has something to say, but usually has zero experience. The Bauer is a piece of garbage and this style of grinder is a gimmick.
Take that grinder and come strip prep my wood deck. I want it ready to stain after you're done. 🤣
Also would love to see the quality paint job you get on that streaky surface after the grinder.
The drum sander/resurfacing tool is great for certain jobs. Also...who pays full retail at HF? They have sales every day of the week...
Thanks for watching!
The production value of your videos is getting too high. I don't like it, might have to unsubscribe. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What....hahaha!! We are still far away! Thank you for watching my friend!
@@IronHorseGarage gotta support the local guys! 👍
Yee Haw!! Thanks again sir!!
