I just stumbled across this report. While I am no fan of the KSA, I must say, the writers of the report really do not have a clue as to the history of the KSA. To make the 1979 Grand Mosque seizure sound like some progressive revolt to overthrow the government for democracy and freedom is beyond absurd. In reality, the seizure was a revolt against what Juhayman al-Otaybi (one of the primary leaders of the rebellion) felt was a growing liberalism in the Kingdom. He started by burning video stores and attacking anything that even appeared to be of "western liberal" origin such as billboards that had photographs of people (forbidden in the conservative form of islam followed by those who rebelled). The seizure was a protest against what the rebels felt was a growing liberalization of the Kingdom. Juhayman felt the government had gotten TOO soft in dealing with people who committed such crimes as adultery (at the time the government was liberalizing its legal system and trying to westernize it somewhat). The executions of today and the other punishments of today is a result the government "giving in" to those of the religious community that supported the rebels......The revolt was actually successful in many ways, the goal of the rebels was to stop the liberalization that was started by King Faisal in the 60s and had continued after his assassination in 1975. The Dawah Wahab (the wahabi mission) and the growth of Saudi funding for conservative mosque and madrasas around the world is a concession "won" as a result of the revolt...but for this revolt, the hard swing to the right to placate the Salafi elements within the Kingdom (they made up the rebels) would probably never had occurred. As for the protests in the Eastern Province. It is totally sectarian in nature and in large part is encouraged by Iran. The population of the eastern province is largely shia' and they want to unify with the Islamic Republic of Iran....it has little, if any, liberal intent. I must say, I thought looking at the world through some neo-Marxist shaded lens had rightfully gone out of style years ago. Apparently there are still a good bit of naïve people out there.

I just stumbled across this report. While I am no fan of the KSA, I must say, the writers of the report really do not have a clue as to the history of the KSA. To make the 1979 Grand Mosque seizure sound like some progressive revolt to overthrow the government for democracy and freedom is beyond absurd. In reality, the seizure was a revolt against what Juhayman al-Otaybi (one of the primary leaders of the rebellion) felt was a growing liberalism in the Kingdom. He started by burning video stores and attacking anything that even appeared to be of "western liberal" origin such as billboards that had photographs of people (forbidden in the conservative form of islam followed by those who rebelled). The seizure was a protest against what the rebels felt was a growing liberalization of the Kingdom. Juhayman felt the government had gotten TOO soft in dealing with people who committed such crimes as adultery (at the time the government was liberalizing its legal system and trying to westernize it somewhat). The executions of today and the other punishments of today is a result the government "giving in" to those of the religious community that supported the rebels......The revolt was actually successful in many ways, the goal of the rebels was to stop the liberalization that was started by King Faisal in the 60s and had continued after his assassination in 1975. The Dawah Wahab (the wahabi mission) and the growth of Saudi funding for conservative mosque and madrasas around the world is a concession "won" as a result of the revolt...but for this revolt, the hard swing to the right to placate the Salafi elements within the Kingdom (they made up the rebels) would probably never had occurred. As for the protests in the Eastern Province. It is totally sectarian in nature and in large part is encouraged by Iran. The population of the eastern province is largely shia' and they want to unify with the Islamic Republic of Iran....it has little, if any, liberal intent. I must say, I thought looking at the world through some neo-Marxist shaded lens had rightfully gone out of style years ago. Apparently there are still a good bit of naïve people out there.
