This was the most balanced and insightful analysis of how the US women's team's performed at the World Cup I've seen. His assessment of its weaknesses, which too many analysts have focused exclusively on, AND its strengths was refreshing. Learning why Rapinoe's choke was no surprise and the phrase "don't play the game you dream, play the game you can" were worth listening to the video by themselves.

Thank you Roger for bringing on Jonas Eidevall. I was so impressed with his in-match analysis with you, Sam and Becky on Twitch. I think you Americans should take a look around you, here in the Netherlands women's football was an amateur sport until even in 2019 we have a pro league since 2 years 2021 I don't know how long in America women's soccer has been pro but I think definitely more than 15 years I think that now more countries are taking women's football seriously we have Ajax Amsterdam that stands for world class men talents on the Assembly line if this club wil pomp money into woman football we will have fast superstars

@@Mrsuperdestroyer Yes, rankings are often unfair, but the main point is that these US youth teams who are failing to win major tournaments like U-23 World Cup, are producing the players who will be in future USMNT and USWNT rosters.

Previously the USA players looked fitter and better prepared than everybody else so they could name the best 11 players and blow other teams away. Going forwards they will have to build functional teams and switch to developing players to technically match the Europeans who are now getting access to top level academies and coaching from the biggest clubs in the world.

Lack of necessary preparation Vlatko sent the players back to play in league the month before World Cup because he didn’t know what else to do with them! He has been an epic failure. We hadn’t played together as a unit for several weeks. We lost Dawn to England and now look how fit they are. We looked weak.
Jill was a strategist. Who to play in what game. Vlatko just didn’t want to start any gays. His homophobia in selecting players and who to play was obvious. Where did all the gays go Vlatko? Epic failure to see the quality of play over his own prejudice. What strategies did he change? Same old up the sides and cross to the middle but no one was there to receive the pass. Controlling the ball gained momentum as they played together, but three games into the World Cup is a little late.

  • @alexh4436

While it is fashionable to trash the USA front line (and justified) we have to remember that lots of big teams with world class forwards also failed to to score as well. Scoring touch seems to ebb and flow a lot in women's soccer. Vlatko's big mistake was taking Rapinoe who was useless for all but marketing purposes instead of Hatch or some other striker that was in form. It might not hove worked but it would have given him another round in the chamber that maybe could have paid off.

This isn’t going to be a lock tournament for any team. The passion is at an all time high and the USWNT was missing that component. They did play better than Sweden for the 120 minutes. I was happy to hear one of the commenters say that he could not see any sign that any of the ladies were flagging. Fitness wasn’t an issue.

With the amount of change that has happened between 2019 to 2023, there’s really no reason to say this should’ve been an easy tournament for the US. We should’ve done better, but there’s so much work that needs to be done with this new squad. Rodman showed she’s adapting to the NT, Smith has hit a wall, DeMelo is certainly needed, and Horan proved she should start. Not being blunt to anyone in particular, what I really believe is that there is nothing wrong with the USWNT in its build up to this game against SWEDEN. Perhaps the only flaw in preparing this game is in deciding whether Megan Rapinoe should play at all, and if so, should Rapinoe start the game. There is apparently a pretty good. game spirit and boasted morale so the mentality is right to play an offensive game, control the temperament, and growing into the game to break down the resistance of SWEDEN. When you have transition of players of different generation as much as fourteen rookies in your squad, you know you've got to have experienced players as mentors on the pitch to guide them, to encourage them and to help orchestrate the play. The one thing that have gone wrong is to select Megan Rapinoe in the first place. True that she is an icon, but being an icon doesn't mean she can be a key player in such a live or die contest. This is a knockout game. Like it or not, if you are not game fit to a 150% physically and mentally, don't play her at all! Megan Rapinoe was completely out of the game in regards to her preparedness and game readiness. She failed to lift the soccer ball in her corner kicks and the ball fell short of 10 yards or so reaching a desirable spot in the 6 yard box. As a matter of fact, her two corner attempts failed to send the ball overhead to a US player, which didn't even reach the near post 3 feet above ground. That weakness exemplified when she voluntarily took a 45-yard out freekick in the dying minutes of the game that her delivery was as as weak as her corner kicks. That kick again didn't reach her teammates waiting earnestly in the penalty box. That said, she didn't even show the agility, strength and the ability to beat any opponent, let alone ball possession. So, the obvious mistake, let me say again, is to include Megan Rapinoe in the squad from the start of the tournament. This is not a tactical mistake, this is a management mistake, and the blame goes to ???
All teams have generation transition issues, when players like Rapinoe and Morgan are in their late professional age, selecting them is a risk. I say there is no specific issue or something wrong for the USWNT in this tournament is true because your squad with these aging players plus immature rookies are bound to fail. And the truth is there is no longevity for star players. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo went through the same decline and cause PSG and Manchester United a lot to play them regularly. Both did not end their career well with these elite clubs. There is no longevity for any team as well. You win a title this season, you'll be defending your title in the next. How many teams in the world are serial winners succeeding in defending their titles year after year? Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City, Barcelona? the same goes to the USWNT. The same fate, and the same cost associated with naming your iconic, beloved celebrity player on your team sheet. I still am adamant in saying there is nothing wrong with the USWNT because they played as a team. It's their opponents who played well, didn't have the same issue in their teams, and they were not suffering with too many aging or rookies in their teams!

But the USWNT really took a turn fir the worse without her on the pitch.

The US lacks a natural goal scorer who is great at putting the ball in net all the time!!!! Marta from Brazil is the top women's world cup scorer, 17 goals!!!! Several other countries are producing an out and out no.9, i know there are certain football coaches and experts who will compare the women to the men!!!!

I play n coach soccer. You don't win all the time. In my 1st year at a school, I was told from the Varsity coach that the players I had would win just some games. We won a tournament championship, a conference championship, n were undefeated. I had to make sure to keep them in line. In my 2nd year, I was told that the new players were better from the Varsity coach. I had to fix several things because I didn't think they were as good as the previous year's players. We still did well n only had 3 losses.

While I get where you are going I have to disagree- really not that complicated-especially after hearing Carly Lloyd talk about the disrespectful culture on the team. Two things broke down- poor coaching and poor leadership within the team.
The coach did not work them hard enough, break them down and build them back up as a team. He played players who simply did not produce and kept going back to them. Set plays were mediocre to poor, finishing was weak. And he allowed a lazy, entitled atmosphere to exist throughout training.
Team culture- Rapione should not have been on the team period. She is way past her prime and her play showed it every time she stepped on the pitch. And more importantly she is a self important princess who has screwed with team culture for years. In the end a huge portion of the country hated her and disliked the team as a result. What other country has a large part of the population hating their national team. They are there to play soccer, not politics.
In the end they did not work hard enough in preparation and as a result played poorly and played as a team of individuals until the last game when it was too late.

@@TheMarpalm your observations are just minor part of the fix. The US culture of hubris, exceptionalism, arrogance, ignorance and omnipotence, is their greatest handicap. The gall and the disgusting arrogant impertinence to imagine they might have something of any worth they would compel the world to comply with, is simple evidence of karma working it's unerring magic. This cultural disadvantage will take decades to overcome. If the US women's team really want to gauge their correct position on the global soccer ladder, they need look no further than the position occupied by their men's team. I don't see them offering helpful hints and tips to Messi, Ronaldo, MANU or Barcelona FC.
They'll get to learn fairly quickly just where they fit in international soccer and may accept a schooling in how to spell humility and respect and how these two words might be used in a sentence. They could worry about strategies after that 🇭🇲

I did not recognized Dunn at all, her game was very sloppy in many areas. Morgan was careless with many chances on goal and missed a penalty against Vietnam. Ert was solid but did not provide the support in the attack that we have seen before.
