Thanks for reacting to this movie, I get the whole historical inaccuracies but it's Disney and they have a habit of changing stories. They usually do it with fairy tales but Pocahontas was a real person. So this was more historical fiction that depicted English settlers taking over the lands of Native Americans. Plus it was funny that the creators wrote John and Pocahontas to be like Romeo and Juliet despite the massive age gap between the real people who I hope didn't engage in a romantic relationship.

Pocahontas is my favorite Disney Princess. She’s really the first princess to show true bravery and courage. Also, it was the first Disney animated classic to have an interracial relationship, even if it was exaggerated historical fiction. It hurts that because of over sensitivity (aka cancel culture) we may never get a live action Pocahontas. Solely because it has way to much chance to have trolls pick it apart and call it racist. Yes I know the original has racist themes but if anything John and Pocahontas’ message at the end of the movie proves racism will never win. It’s defeated. Still have my fingers crossed for an epic live action of this heroine!!

This is one of my top 5 fave disney movies! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it, the music, the story and the characters are just great. The inaccuracies, while big, are nothing new to disney, nothing disney does is 100% accurate. They usually use fairytales though so I get that their use of historical fiction isn’t for everyone, but it isn’t a documentary and it still teaches a message that a lot of people could stand to learn today

Greed is an interesting emotion/motivation that both historically and this movie show. Example when Cortes colonized Mexico and Central America his men didn’t even consider the idea that the natives have no real use for gold except for decoration and/or religious reasons but thought that they have a ridiculous amount of gold somewhere

It's also very spot on in showing that wars usually get encouraged by someone at the top who would profit off the conflict, and rather than killing each other, we'd be better suited trying to remove the person from power who's pitting us against each other for their own profit

So, I always had a theory that Grandmother willow was just playing a big part of Mother Earth.

What’s funny is that this film was made by Disney’s animation A team and this was thought to be their biggest hit. While their B team was working on Lion King.... We all know which of the two won out in the end.
Why? Probably cause of the touchy subject matter and general awkwardness most people probably had. Not sure how accurate that is, but that’s just my guess.

I think Disney should at least be given a clap on the back for portraying Native Americans as more than a caricature (unlike a lot of media of the time), and showing the evil of greed and colonisation for what it really was. Not to mention how the upper classes spread blatant lies and misinformation to corrupt the public into believing the natives were the aggressors. The overall message against racism and prejudice I think makes this a very important movie to come out in the mid 90s, regardless of it's fast and loose play on historical fantasy.

A few things are quite odd about this movie though. For example, 41:35 actually seems concerned about Smith's execution. And Powhatan allows his daugther to be with Kocoum's kiIIer, not knowing the truth. And then there's 41:05: Smith is her dream and destiny, and yet he leaves in the end (and she eventually meets John Rolfe, but they probably didn't plan that, so that may not count). Kind of contradictory, isn't it? So does Ratcliffe's "treason" in this movie, since it technically wasn't. Bullet was for Powahtan, not Smith.
Personally, I would've just made Smith that red-beared Quincy guy from "The Spirit of Giving" and the woman's lover and friend. The deuteragonist, sure, but not her love interest. I would've made Rolfe that in this movie (unofficially, so they can seal the deal in the sequel). Heck, I would've made Rolfe a nobleman, since that's the closest to a prince if he has no royal blood in him (and fairly make him one of the Disney princes). I would've made him one of the settlers, possibly replacing Thomas so he can still be an important character who isn't the deuteragonist. I would've given half of Pocahontas's moments with Smith to Rolfe, so that her relationship with both Johns can be seen, but it being a more magical with Rolfe and educational for Smith (referencing Colors of the Wind). I would've had him saved by Pocahontas and shot for Powhatan mid-movie so that Rolfe's time with Pocahontas is next). Maybe have John Rolfe captured by the Indians after _Ratcliffe_ shoots a raging Kocoum, out of biased hatred. No wait...I would've made Governor Ratcliffe probably Samuel Argall, to have him kidnap Pocahontas as she tries to give him a basket of food for his crew. Maybe make a deal with Powahtan to exchange prisoners on the battlefield (kind of like how the real Argall did to free his captured crewmen), or simply keep Pocahontas hostage for whatever reason while planning to battle kiII the Inidians for their "gold." I don't know. Any questions you guys have? I always like to discuss my hypothetical visions.

I think people give this movid to much flag now a days. Yes, Pocahontas and Johns ages and relationship aren't acurate, and we don't see the full extend of the bloody outcome that colonialism brought with it most of the time, BUT! I think this movie still does a great job at showing how scary and unfair those things could be back than. It speeks openly about war, it shows the coruption of the high class settlers and doesn't shugar coat their disrespect towards the nativ people, as well as the coruption coused by fear in the natives till both sides are basically two sides of a coin. And while I can't judge how acurate the depiction of Pocahontas tribe is, there are still things I recognize from the view things I know about different native tribes, so I think this movie does a good job introducing kids to a culture that they might never have heard about (remember, this movie wasn't only viewed by american kids).
I think people forget that this movie is two things: a kids movie, and a story.
    It is not a documentary.
But it IS a great introduction to get kids interested in learning more about the subjects depicted!

Seriously, I wish I subscribed to you before you did this video. I would have asked you to get the Special Edition version (10th Anniversary Edition), it's the completed movie. You and two other youtubers are the only ones that are willing to see this as a movie, not a film trying to rewrite history. I have been aware of the real story in elementary school, then later on it got so heartbreaking but last year I reviewed the film again and enjoyed it even more, because it wasn't Disney's intention to or even be a historical film, it was to take a tragic story, which is 90 percent their movies, and make it into a kids movie. Pocahontas in my opinion, is not just one of the greatest Disney films, but an underrated classic that didn't deserve the hate it got in the beginning. The Song Savages is one of my favorite songs because it shows what fear does to people, of course Colors of the Wind is still strong, especially today. The reason I recommended the Special Edition is because it contains the cut song If I Never Knew You and Mel Gibson and Judy Kuhn were a perfect couple for that song, and the song gets a reprise in the end. And the moment you hear the song and wonder why it was cut, and who's bright idea it was to cut it, it was none other then Alan Menken, who has stated multiple times that he regrets the decision.

And it's that type of arrogance we are all living with in this world. Instead of coming together and learning to become better people the world rather have us be Divided because we are weaker that way and are easier to take advantage of and to control, or in governments normally that's how they see it, and that's just how I see it that way though.

Go to the states, and learn all about the native American tribes whilst staying with them for a big learning vacation

This movie is so historically Inaccurate. The songs and Animation make up for it. Especially the score at the end. 2:50 RIGHT! I first learned about Princess Pocahontas when I was in the First Grade. I’m almost at the end of 9th grade. 2 and half Months. 7:25 She schooled everyone on how to do a swan dive. FR. 20:01 History would disagree. John Smith Should have been John Rolf. The sequel is better. 9:45 Right. I have a Disney playlist made up of 105 songs, I think. 9:57 Walt blamed himself for his mother’s death. So that why there are no Mothers or Parents in Disney films. “Savages” Could have been the most racist song in Disney history. 2:19 Disney 2D animation was just amazing. Winnie the Pooh was the last 2D Disney film. And Tarzan was the last in the Renaissance. 25:08 Right. 10:10-25:02 Nostalgia Hits me. I listed to the songs as a kid. Just around the riverbed and Colors of the wind. Respectively. 10:10 Pocahontas Name means “Flower between Two streams.” 25:38-25:43 The animation is so fluid.😍🍂 3:51 Could never be me. 4:47 Hunchback used the word The G racial slur. So… 12:19 Man, Humanity is messed up. 26:00 Yeah. I know an extent of culture.

Hate that when people mention anything having to do with Native Americans because of how some people treated the Native Americans they automatically project that experience on to every single Native American experience and which is just 100% untrue their relationships between settlers and natives that were completely cordial productive and harmonious For some reason people don’t want to believe that and they just assume that every encounter was a fatal encounter which if anybody actually picked up a history book and actually talk to tribes they would know that not every encounter was bad and that they were actually really good ones that lasted for a number of years of course it didn’t last with every single one because every generation has new people and people have to make decisions on their own about how they’re gonna treat somebody else.

Despite its historical inaccuracy, this movie is indeed very beautiful, makes me tear up repeatedly no matter how many times I watch it, and has one of my favorite Disney-soundtracks. Kocoum's death always makes me sad, all in all he was a good man and I think he and Nakoma could've made a really good couple. The ending always gives me chills. The sequel however.. I want to like it, but I just haven't been able to rewatch it after seeing for the first time years ago. Maybe I should take the bull by the horns and finally do so soon, but let's see.
