  • Of Human Bondage is a 1934 American Pre-Code drama film directed by John Cromwell and is widely regarded by critics as the film that made Bette Davis a star. The screenplay by Lester Cohen is based on the 1915 novel Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham.

I always thought old movies were boring until at work one day back in the 2000s I caught a glimpse of Bette Davis in this movie. She is absolutely captivating and I have watched so many of her movies now. She is the best,

I always thought the golden ages were well and truly interesting times and were the best films made. They certainly do not make them as they used to. If you like things like this, watch the film 42nd Street. It came out I believe the same year as this film. I related to the main character here of Philip. I was born with clubbed feet, so when they had a character with clubbed feet, I could relate to him and I could not stand Mildred. Bette understood her character well and portrayed her in a way that was absolutely hair pulling and frustrating. Hard to accomplish now a days with today's actors. I'll take a movie from 1930's any day and I'm 39. I'll be 40 end of this year and I much prefer the old colorless pictures to anything now. Glad that you gave golden age Hollywood a chance, try more films - there's a whole list! It's on here to, when you have a moment watch Arsenic and old lace. I promise, you will love that film! I did, I laughed so hard. It was so well done...I tell anyone that loves these sorts of films, watch Arsenic and Old Lace. It's one of the best and remains a favorite of mine, right behind this film, Of Human Bondage.

Before the Hayes Code was enacted movies could be a bit more edgy. Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck are my favorite actresses from that period because they weren't afraid to take on any role.

"Good riddance to bad rubbish". My Mom used to say that, and I am sure that she heard it in this film.

There are lovely people out there. It's just finding the right one. I believe if someone is treating anyone like Mildred treated Phillip, then it's best after the first time it happens to move on. Because then the person you are supposed to be with ends up being missed when pursuing someone not worth their salt like Mildred. It was downright sad. Both Bette Davis and Leslie Howard were fantastic. It is such a shame what happened to Leslie during WW2. His plane he was taken got brought down when flying over a place that was in the middle of a war. He was a fantastic actor.

She fought hard for this role. At the time the majority of actresses ran away from the role because they where afraid of being type casted as 'A bitch'..
In her Memoir Bette told of how she would be waiting for Mr.Warner every am with the shoe shine boy and every night she pleaded with him..Till finally almost 18 months he finally let her Go to RKO to make the movie.
I've read the book several times and she did an excellent job.

This movie in no way should be confused with the book. It doesn't come close to his angst or his obsession with this woman. This movie was only a drop in the bucket. I was literally mentally worn out when I finished the book. I mean this movie just didn't hit the same but that's Summerset, he hits the bone.

I appreciate your response but do not entirely agree. The level of obsession and passion he/ the narrator had for this woman, who barely acknowledges his existence, would be almost impossible to portray on-screen without making him seem like an absolute nutter. Both leading actors are well-chosen and do a remarkable job.

Such a great movie. Ahead of its time in terms of technique, use of sound, Davis as a bitchy but still sympathetic heroine. Brilliant. I love the moment when Leslie Howard gets his foot fixed, only to use his new found mobility to walk endlessly for jobs that aren't there, in Depression era England. The ending also isn't typical, as the director leaves it unclear whether he'd be truly happy with Frances Dee. Nothing goes as you think it will in this film. Great stuff.

Cockney. It developed as the dialect of the poorer working classes in the East End of London. In England people can tell what class you're from by your accent. So I suppose your laughing face is based on not having heard Cockney before.

What a boring, sub-mediocre soap opera. I don't think Maugham, as a homosexual, understood the least thing about true love among heteros, especially given his disturbed and broken childhood and upbringing. His characters never make sense to me and they are often lacking in credible motivations.
