I'm Cambodian and after seeing the immense hate for cilantro on social media, I realized people have preferences due to their "palate spectrum" and DNA. Outside the food industry, convincing one to like our dish is not our job. The point of trying foreign cuisines is to be open to experience new flavors and to appreciate the culture behind it. It's like discovering a new form of art unlike you've ever seen.
Cambodian food is created by us and for us and reflects our region's fauna and flora which creates unique flavors. However, our most popular Cambodian dishes among tourists are Amok (fish dish), Lok Lak (beef salad dish), and Num Ban Chok (a soft noodle dish varying in flavor depending on the Samlar and Kroeung used. The original form of this dish predates Chinese influence).
Also, Vice had an article about the Thai government funding the many Thai restaurants, worldwide, as a form of culinary diplomacy to boost export and tourism. Our government has been stepping up lately but really needs to utilize Cambodians more familiar with the history/origin, the authentic recipes, and techniques.
Another point is that Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines are/were always Asian joke fodder on American television as they are seen as obscure and less vocal Asians up until an episode of Desperate House Wives made fun of the Philippines and ABC had to apologize. I guess Nigel is learning this lesson as well. It worked for Filipinos, so I'm glad Cambodians are finally speaking up.

As a Lao person, even if he’s joking, it still was punching down. Laos is practically invisible on the global stage and if the only time people hear about it as the butt of the joke, it has an effect. When you have a platform, you have to be aware of your reach.
Also amongst Asians there’s a ton of inter country racism. Like, East Asians shitting on southeast Asians is a thing and it’s hard enough being a minority in a country thats bad with non-whites that we we don’t need to be attacking each other.

    • @Willxdiana

The Lao Lan Xang Kingdom lost some of its territory when the French redrew the border between Laos and Thailand. Laos was never part of Thailand as so many Thai nationals have stated in the comments. It was never one big country composing of Laos and Thailand and Laos did not break off from Thailand to form Laos, as so many of you are alluding to. Modern day Laos is what is left of Lan Xang, a LAO KINGDOM. Modern day Isaan region, was also part of Lan Xang, a LAO KINGDOM. Some of the individuals who keep repeating that Laos came from Thailand are the prime example of Phibun's wet dream. His Thaification policies governed what people would wear, what they would be taught in school (important note here: what students were taught in Thai schools!), etc etc. This meant that people from different cultural backgrounds, millions of Lao people living in Thailand included, be assimilated to the more standard central Thailand. Now, why there are many Lao people living in Thailand deserves a different rant, but in short: war, enslavement, some leave for work, etc. So, if you're a Thai national living in Isaan, explore your ancestry. You might be ethnically Lao or another minority.
Fast forward in history a bit, gastrodiplomacy brought Thai food to the world stage. The Thai government was genius for this because it did, indeed, boost tourism in the country. The Thai government paid people to move abroad and literally open up Thai restaurants. This is why there are so many Thai restaurants and because of its popularity, Lao people started opening up restaurants and calling it "Thai". Anyway, for me, I'll call papaya salad (with the fermented fish sauce), sticky rice, sai ua, and laab as Lao and Isaan food, but not Thai because those are not dishes that come to my mind when I think of Thai food, but Thai food is delicious, too.

Nigel has already released a video of Uncle Roger and aebaybayy making three three Laotian dishes together. After they eat he compliments the food, and says Laos has good food. I'm pretty sure the former videos were just a set up for his video with her, and also most likely some not yet mentioned Cambodian chef. Uncle Roger is meant to be that old uncle who doesn't speak well of anyone, but I can see how some people can be hurt by his words. I doubt Nigel was being serious or intentionally hateful.

I had a Chinese boss once…he asked where I came from (Laos), he straight up said he knew nothing about Lao except we’re lazy, don’t care to progress. Of course, I just translated that to we love the sabai sabai lifestyle and we work when we need to. We lived off the land. Even though we are…were landlocked (China said the belt and road initiative makes us unlocked), we were self sufficient.

I hear people say shit like this and take it with a grain of salt.
I’ve met people who say they hate Japanese food… when what they really mean is they don’t like sushi.
It’s very hard to say you don’t like a culture’s food when it has thousands of different dishes

    • @wegotit2587
      @wegotit2587 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Exactly! And lots of factors influence people’s personal biases too. For example, here is a Non-food example:
People who are adamant about disliking cats, you ask them:
      “Why do you hate cats?”
Their response (usually): “Oh, I’m allergic to them, so therefore I hate them!”
^Yet logically, most of us know that’s wrong to completely dislike a cat who cannot help it whether you are allergic to them or not. Cats may not be for you if you suffer from allergies, but it doesn’t mean their existence makes them horrible.
Most of the people I encounter who hate on Lao food complain how it’s too spicy (too spicy in comparison yo Thai or Mexican) or that some do the dishes look dirty (some dishes call for unfiltered fish sauce to bring out more of the umami), too many vegetables or herbs, etc.
Confusing personal preferences for hate is the wrong approach.

To those who says it's only comedy, he is what professional comedians call a "low hanging fruit" comedian. He is just rehashing William Hung's bit with a fake, offensive persona, IYKYK. His fans forget that his "comedy" routine IS of him complaining and staying pressed which made him popular. He tried to cancel Cambodian and Laotian food and now complaining about himself being cancelled. Cambodia is just dishing what he's been serving.
I'm sure he knows milking out this type of drama will get old pretty fast. If he's smart, he would showcase all Asian cuisine, but now turning against other Asian countries to please TH-cam algorithms or, I suspect government promotional funding, is simply making room for another TH-cam channel. My husband is Filipino and it was interesting for us to see the Pinoy Baiting take over TH-cam that lasted for a time, but now, no longer generating the same viewership. I guess pitting Asian nations against each other is the next trend, but like Pinoy Baiting, people catch on and will move on. I'm glad my generation had Chef Martin Yan.

I get that you can't please everyone, especially everyone in the Asian community. I get that it's a joke to create a hoopla for an upcoming collab. However, the fact that Laos and Cambodians are under-represented not only in America but in Asia, it's an unnecessary joke. Food is a big factor and an introduction to a person's culture. So, to diss it (even in jest) leaves a poor taste in everyone's mouth.

China and Cambodia are sworn brothers. Their relationship goes back to the 13th century. Ancient Khmer empire used practice marriage alliances with who over ruled over China. The Chinese however were not allowed to live in today's Siem Reap and they were instructed by the khmer rulers to build market places in Funan which is todays Phnom Penh which was an empty city before Chinese people settled down. This is the reason why up until 1974 (before Pol Pot wipped out Chinese and Viet) over 60% of the people of Phnom Penh have Chinese ancestors speaking Teochew (Chaozhou). Teochew people are all about business and they are representing true Chinese culture and tradition all over South East Asia. All the SEA capitals are rich because of the Teochews

Myself as a tai-lao isan person i aint mad at uncle roger at all all i wanna say is Lao food isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and its not the fanciest of asian foods either you like it or dont real thai food on the other hand is just like lao northern thai and isan food as thats how most tai kadais eat but what makes most commonly known thai foods today popular and flavorful is the heavy Chinese influence from the teochew and hakka that assimilated onto become thais over the centuries 🤙 💯

Yeah, quite funny when Whites realize (usually after another Asian points it out to them) that for them hating on Chinese food, it sure is hilarious that a lot of the foods they enjoy from Thai restaurants are Thai Chinese dishes (but given a Thai name)…😅
Also, you want to help with proper promotion of Tai Lao foods, it can start by NOT putting down our people’s heritage and food to begin with (but sadly this goes for most Thai Isan-Lao I encounter in real life and online). Just because our food isn’t suitable for most non-Lao (basically for most Whites), doesn’t mean it’s not “good enough.”
Lao food is one of the only foods that makes you want to “keep eating” and it’s not just the msg or Phadek alone, it’s the intensity of it all and respect to utilize as much fresh herbs and ingredients as possible, while balancing all these extreme ingredients into amazing dishes…is why it is not surprising that world renowned trained chefs praise Lao foods?

Massaman had nothing related to Chinese influence. It's funny how all Laotian assume that Thai dish got Chinese ingredient.what make Thai Cuisine standout is the mixture between Indian (Arabian) and Chinese, which Laos, a landlock realm, can't melt it.

@@saranyanaka3619 Nobody said anything about All Thai foods being ONLY Chinese influenced nor did anyone bring up Massaman Curry as Chinese…Why do you Thais have really bad reading comprehension skills? However, it still doesn’t change the fact most “safe” Thai dishes to Westerners are Chinese Thai in origins, especially Americanized Thai foods. And since Thailand has more Chinese diaspora than any other country on the planet, why are you so butt hurt about the truth?
Everyone already knows Thai food is a mixture of everyone else’s culture, so in reality it’s not all that unique. The only thing really “unique” about Thai food is that your government has “educated” all you Thais that there is really such a thing as “Thai food,” so you do everything you can to brag about it, when in reality Thai is like American…there is no real food, just mixtures of everyone’s cultural foods turned into a “Thai interpretation.” Also, all Southeast Asian countries have their own variations of Indian Curries or Chinese influenced dishes, so when you put Thai foods up against other Southeast Asian foods….it’s actually not that unique.
HOWEVER, what does make Lao Cuisine and eating customs stand out is that Lao were better at keeping with a lot ancient traditions of cooking styles such as steaming, boiling, grilling most foods, Sticky Rice consumption (as the staple starch) and primarily Tum salads.
