These two guys staked out a place in entertainment history that has never been duplicated. It was lightning in a bottle when they formed that team. Audiences adored them. They were buddies and rivals and worked that shtick to the max. Great memories.
Siskel and Ebert both had habits of domineering conversations if not in a conversation with someone of equal wit. They were not trying to be bullies, but their acerbic natures were always apparent. When they are talking to people with similar wits it was a thing of beauty.
@@AE-bm4no Conan certainly had more comedic wit or the potential for comedic wit. You are correct. They really should have let Conan speak. I wonder how Conan would handle this today. He was still relatively new to the role of host at the time.
RIP Roger Ebert (June 18, 1942 - April 4, 2013), aged 70 And RIP Gene Siskel (January 26, 1946 - February 20, 1999), aged 53 You both will always be remembered as legends.
It's BIGGER than that. We lost the morals and good tastes they 'forced' studios to impose...with that gone, in todays 'I do what I want' anything goes 'society' the critic is meaning less...because like every thing else - anyone can be one. Which they can't in fact.
..and less than 18 years later, Siskel and Ebert would both be dead, Conan would have received and then had stolen back from him the position of host of the Tonight Show, and Max's son would become the drummer for Slipknot. You know, Conan actually had Slipknot on to perform back when The Max Weinberg Seven were the band on his show.
There's a bit on an old Howard Stern Show where Gene says Roger is a ladies man based solely on roger being a good time. I feel like he shows that pretty well here. I'd love to interview both of them.
How did the side to side comb over last for so many decades. Yul Brenner and Kojak were ahead of their time. I miss Gene and Roger. Watching these clips is like comfort food. Almost as good as peanut chews.
I love how those two always switched seats when appearing on late night shows. They couldn't stand the thought of the other always getting closer to the host and thus having an advantage.
the best thing about them was they used to draw attention of the viewer towards the the movie not towards themselves . a lot of critics use thier language to make headlines and rave about thier own speaking skiils.
I remember hearing in a later episode Jennifer Lopez refused to do the show anymore after this night because these guys went so long she had to be bumped.
@Gren Wren he's always been consistently funny and smart as hell. i'm not sure if i know of any comedian with as many talents and as much longevity as he. he can write really well too. talented bastard
10:42 While I just on general principle think ALL awards shows are silly, but Gene Siskel is right on the money here. If you buy into the fact that okay, we have these ceremonies anyway, literally the entire fucking point of them is SUPPOSED to be letting the "winners" have this spotlight put on them, and so what always happens? yep, they cut them off after 20 seconds. Sure, that's logical. If you bother to do these awards shows, it's flat out insulting that they try to rush the winners off stage. Them getting to have this solitary indulgent moment is WHY it's all happening to begin with. You should never hear a single note from the orchestra when a category winner is accepting their award.
At about 3:00 in, Ebert and Richter share some University of Illinois insider stuff. Gene makes some semi-heard comment about "real intellectual stuff" or something like that. Conan's response is to make a "went over my head" gesture. Let's get this out of the way: that's probably the only time anything goes over Conan's head. But the subtext here is that O'Brien is a *Harvard* man and is going for a great laugh at his expense. He's okay with being the dummy because he's got enough self-confidence to not get snarled up in anything. It's interesting that he's next to S&E who are sniping at each other like 10- and 12-year-old siblings. Who's being more mature, the journalists or the clown? For the record: I love S&E and I know that they're not - on the whole - immature people, it's just interesting to watch this all unfold with full context.
TheGimpPimp1 You heard wrong. I saw this whole thing play out when it happened. Leno was the victim . Conan quit he wasnt fired . Leno simply went back to the job that was taken from him in the first place
Conan O'Brien has survived over the years due to his skits and the comedic regulars like Norm MacDonald. He has not survived due to his interviewing skill, which has always been abysmal.
They agreed Gene would come out first and Roger would sit closest to Conan. And Christians dying in the Colosseum is largely a myth promoted by the Church. Historians writing at the time don't mention it.
i payed homage to these guys by giving this video a thumbs up
Michael Gibbs shh
Two, very enthusiastic thumbs up, for all that are featured.
Massive contribution to human society
I followed your example. These dudes are entertaining
another christian lives

kevin r. Conan and Andy?
They had fabulous chemistry. I found them in 1978 and watched until Gene passed.
These guys were so great! Funny and intelligent these two were the best critics ever!
Roger Ebert - yes
Gene Siskel - no
Siskel and Ebert both had habits of domineering conversations if not in a conversation with someone of equal wit. They were not trying to be bullies, but their acerbic natures were always apparent. When they are talking to people with similar wits it was a thing of beauty.
Them on Howard Stern is always beautiful to behold (clips on TH-cam)
But Roger wasn't letting Conan speak and Conan probably has more wit, definitely comedic wit
@@AE-bm4no Conan certainly had more comedic wit or the potential for comedic wit. You are correct. They really should have let Conan speak. I wonder how Conan would handle this today. He was still relatively new to the role of host at the time.
"acerbic" look at the big brain on Brad

Always loved seeing these two. Such good chemistry. Can't believe they are both gone. 😥
I have a no-bacon clause in my contract. (Love Ebert's genuine laugh at that!) The two of them are clearly having a lot of fun here.
You know they should still be reviewing. Both were taken too early. It's just a shame.

The boys just vibing
Siskel and Ebert were first guests on a show that also had Oscar winner Jeffrey Rush and Jennifer Lopez as guests. Damn!
This is the most i seen of Roger Elbert and gene Sickel laughing out loud!! They look like having a fantastic time
You should see them on Howard stern, clips on TH-cam
..and less than 18 years later, Siskel and Ebert would both be dead, Conan would have received and then had stolen back from him the position of host of the Tonight Show, and Max's son would become the drummer for Slipknot.

Roger Ebert looks like he could be Andy's dad
They went to the same university.
Spot on!
Yes, Herrr Ebert once had a dalliance with a Swedish lady to produce Andy Richter, the Swedish-German
Thank you for uploading this.
There's a bit on an old Howard Stern Show where Gene says Roger is a ladies man based solely on roger being a good time. I feel like he shows that pretty well here. I'd love to interview both of them.
I have some bad news for you...
1:35 WOW i can't remember the last time Max had an ad-lib like that, nice!
Two years before Gene Siskel passed away.
I love Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel!!
Two of the greatest movie Critters ever lived amazing work by both of them Cisco neighbor always will be missed by everyone
Roger Siskel and Gene Ebert are two of my favorites

One of the definitions of treasure is that it is hard to find.

Conan looks exactly the same today
@Gren Wren he's always been consistently funny and smart as hell. i'm not sure if i know of any comedian with as many talents and as much longevity as he. he can write really well too. talented bastard
Four TV legends all in a row! 😁

I thought Ebert was going to say "Siskel's name comes first because he's the opening act".
"Cut out all the junk! Cut out all those horrible Vegas, pseudo-Vegas production numbers!"
Sad to know that Siskel would be gone in 2 years 😢😢😢
OW.... thought they were going to review conan the barbarian :(
ohhhhh this was the night that Conan snubbed jlo.
Great reply by Max.
7:18 Amen and Hallejulah to that!!! I (Heart) NYC.
"Yes, we were giving 'Yes' and 'No' votes and that was intellectual property! Ha ha ha ha ha " :-D LMAO
A lot of people don’t remember they were a PBS show before they went to syndication.
They should have appeared more times on Conan
Omg I died at the end - "So two thumbs down for those!"
Notice how in 2 segments they don't even discuss actual/current/specific movies? lol :)
Goddamn, I miss THIS Conan and I miss the boys.... their knowledge is missed....
Years later Ebert would call out Russell Crows' Gladiator for getting the thumbs wrong.
Its worth bumping J Lo for these two.
Did Gene know Andy from somewhere? They really hit it off at the beginning. Maybe Andy is from the same Chicago area or knows a mutual friend?
EnzoTheBaker Andy grew up in Yorkville, Illinois. Its not far from Chicago. Also Andy went to Columbia College in Chicago.
Andy and Ebert both went to UIUC but nowhere near the same time.
Well as a swede andy does spend a lot of time under the queensboro bridge
I like watching these two but WOW... what a comb over!

Enjoying that they look like Oompa Lompa’s in this video…

bruce springsteens drummer
tea one thousands new hummer
frank bottom stunner
he ended up not having time for Jennifer Lopez
scotts cutting room floor
jimmy lamothe shown the door
john taberskis corp
What a lousy audience. Barely laughed at anything.
It’s was a result of the lack of comical genius of the host.
This show is not "Conan" It's Late Night with Conan O'Brien
blaq7427 Yeah...Before Jay Leno screwed him over...
TheGimpPimp1
Leno didnt screw anyone It was he that got screwed
blaq7427 I heard different...
TheGimpPimp1
You heard wrong. I saw this whole thing play out when it happened. Leno was the victim . Conan quit he wasnt fired . Leno simply went back to the job that was taken from him in the first place
I'll take your word for it...
Oskee wa wa
Two years later Gene was dead.
Thumbs up. WAYYYYyyyyyy up (ur arse)
Rickter is just an empty suit.
Gene was dead within a year
Jennifer Lopez wuz bumped (true story)
poor Jene gets roasted at every direction
Too bad Connan couldn't conduct a real interview. 6:27
This crowd sucked. I guess they were better suited for the Letterman audience.
Conan O'Brien has survived over the years due to his skits and the comedic regulars like Norm MacDonald. He has not survived due to his interviewing skill, which has always been abysmal.
No he did pretty good
He's the best we have these days
@@waynej2608 He does better than I could.

Conan is the talk show host for the under educated
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach become critics.
Ehh.. not as good as Letterman
Conan should have stayed as a Simpsons writer, because he's the most obnoxious talk-show host ever.
zoltan902 Nah, he’s great.
Conan is such cringe was never funny.
Then why are u watching him? Conan is hilarious!
@@breal8484 To see Siskel and Ebert lol.
You must find Jimmy Fallon hilarious
I like him but his nervousness makes me nervous at times.
