Gary Oldman is the best actor ever. He's just insanely brilliant in this role. Even Gary himself said this is still the most challenging performance of his career. Might also be his best.
Gary Oldman killed it in this movie. There were a lot of great Dracula actors over the years, but Gary managed to portray different sides to Dracula and made all of them feel like flesh and blood. The charming gentleman, the decadent old vampire lord, the ruthless werewolf-vampire hybrid, the heroic medieval knight, etc. A career-defining performance.
This is one of the greatest movies ever made. The book was great. This movie was so great it withstood Keanu Reeves acting which was the sole negative reaction from critics. A few points:' 1: Mina is the re-incarnation of Elizabeta and Van Helsing is the re-incarnation of the priest in the opening scene. You will notice Anthony Hopkins played both characters. 2: The carriage rider who picked up Jonathan from the Borgo pass was Dracula. 3: The first vampyre who rose from the bed to seduce Jonathan was played by Monica Bellucci. It was her second film appearance. 4: Dracula through out the film takes up different physical forms. None of what you watched was a dream. At end it is plain to see that Dracula has to come grips with his destiny and wants his soul to rest in peace. Great movie and the book is even better!!
I will never forget watching this movie for the first time, dark, home alone. A found red wine. Totally sucked into the screen. It totally floored me and made me become obsessed with vampires and gothic stuff. I'd never seen something like it before. Masterpiece.
This is still my favorite Dracula movie ever made. It gets a lot of flack because Winona Ryder (who had done back to back films at the time and was suffering exhaustion plus had no chemistry with Oldman) and Reeves for not being able to do an English accent. I still think his acting in the movie beyond the accent was great, especially in the scene with Dracula’s brides. Visually stunning and the rest of the cast absolutely made this film. Oldman is the BEST Dracula ever and Sadie Frost, Cary Elves and the rest really made this movie shine. It won Best Costume Design, as it should. The score should have won as well.
i had to recently come to terms with the fact that this is my favorite movie. every decision is rad, even the choices to be boring and bad for whole portions.
I love this movie, even with its flaws. Everyone involved went all out. The movie won four Oscars, including Eiko Ishioka for Costume Design (plus winners for Art Direction, Makeup, and Sound Editing).
Coppola made another movie in-between the two Godfathers that was also nominated at the Oscars with Godfather part II. "THE CONVERSATION" should be more talked about
One of the best casting in movie history: Gary Oldman in ''Bram Stoker's Dracula'' One of the worst casting in movie history: Keanu Reeves in ''Bram Stoker's Dracula''
I can relate with your analysis. I first saw this movie as a teenager in the 90’s and I’m still not sure whether it’s a good movie or if I even like it… yet something keeps bringing me back.
One of my favorite movies of all time. A masterpiece, despite Keanu's terrible accent. Visually stunning and you either love or hate this, it is a different type of film. I'd choose D too......I see no downside of being a vampire 🤣😂🤣🖤
Love your reactions Jimmy. I recently watched ‘The Father’ with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. It was exceptionally good and Anthony Hopkins won best actor in 2021 (6th Oscar). I would die happy if you were to react to it 🙏🏼. It’s an emotional one ❤️
Yeah, I think this movie would be thought of far more positively had they gone with an all English cast (or at the very least actors who could do the accents passably well). It’s kind of a shame, cause it’s filled with some fantastic, old school special effects.
@@jeffwilliams2828 I just don't think he naturally meshes well with period work and he never feels like he's comfortable in the performance, but I do think he's a damn good action star. His work in contemporary action films speaks for itself, dude has a resume many other actors would kill for. I'm also very fond of his directorial work with Man of Tai Chi.
@@cassandrasmith5231 If he did this movie today his performance would be considerably better because of wisdom and experience. This was right after his stoner hit Bill and Ted. I don’t think he had the power to really pick the right roles yet in his career.
Bishop be like: Yes, thank you for saving the kingdom of Christendom, millions from death, slavery and persecution by the Ottoman Empire, but I have to start talking about how your wife needs to burn in hell. Dracula took that personally.
Keanu doing that horrible British accent is legendarily bad. He can't help but sound like British Ted. This was a turning point in his career though. After getting lambasted for the accent he started picking his roles a lot more carefully and it led to a great career as an action star.
Dracula is one of my favorite books, so I absolutely hated this movie. It strays in such weird directions from the book. I remembered I didn't like it, but your recap reminded me I loathed it.
So many many awesome things about this movie. But we all acknowledge that Keanu was the weakest link. Pick 5 random actors of his generation and you're guaranteed to get at least one that would have done a better job. It's not my fave Winona performance either! But this movie did a great job of making Dracula *not a joke*, which is what he had been for decades previous.

Man I love this movie. All effects were done in camera, which is amazing. Gary Oldman killing it as usual.

Fantastic Film. Gary Oldman is just a legend.

Love the soundtrack to this!
This movie is so fucking incredible. Just great to look at and listen to.
Your cackle after the bedroom scene was *chef's kiss*
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Confidence at 100
Gary Oldman's best acting role ever. His voice sounds so much like my Grandmother's accent.
I will never forget watching this movie for the first time, dark, home alone. A found red wine. Totally sucked into the screen. It totally floored me and made me become obsessed with vampires and gothic stuff. I'd never seen something like it before. Masterpiece.
Van Helsing is like the Dr. House of the supernatural world. Great at what he does but no bedside manner.

I think it gets a lot of flack because apart from Gary Oldman and some camera tricks, it's shit.

Me trying to describe every film I love
I love this movie, even with its flaws. Everyone involved went all out. The movie won four Oscars, including Eiko Ishioka for Costume Design (plus winners for Art Direction, Makeup, and Sound Editing).
Yes and Gary wasn't even nominated! Don't know what they were thinking. Back then he didn't get nominated for anything.
Such a classic! A few horrendous accents don't spoil the overall crazy masterpiece, I think!
One of the greatest openings in cinematic history, equally is the phenomenal performance by Gary Oldman

Love this movie one of the best vampire movies! I heard Keanu is really British.
I'm a fan of this movie. Jimmy, been a fan for a while. Can't wait for the channel to catch the algorithm ride and blow up.

Love mr. wick but that accent. Omg! I was 19 when this movie came out. Thought it was awesome. Nice seeing that you appreciated it.

beautiful movie, with an incredible performance by Anthony Hopkins
I know I shouldn't mutilate a dead horse, but good god, Keanu's accent and performance in this is shockingly bad.
He’s actually not a great actor. But he plays dude with angry whisper voice very very well. Matrix, Constantine, John Wick…
Yeah, I think this movie would be thought of far more positively had they gone with an all English cast (or at the very least actors who could do the accents passably well). It’s kind of a shame, cause it’s filled with some fantastic, old school special effects.

This is like SLEEPY HOLLOW or INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. It's not the best movie but it's fun to watch.

The movie has some flaws but it sets the mood watching it around Halloween and has so many cool things going for it visually.
I love how they got another real British actor Keanu Reeves

Johnny Depp should have been Jonathan Harker though (was dating Winona around that time).
