Again another "Thunderbear" master piece. Finally a blacksmith / knife maker on TH-cam who shapes handle like this with simple woodworking tools (knife, drawknife, rasp and a little sandpaper) by hand. And not using the belt sander and create a full room of wood dust followed by extensive cleaning. Producing shavings is nicer than making dust. Two thumbs up.

So awesome to see you forge out a pickaxe! I was thinking about the level of craftmanship needed to make a tool that will last generations when the usage is extremely brutal! I still use one that my great grandfather made many many years ago. It's a tool that should last generations if made correctly. My grandfather used the same pickaxe I use today when he dug out the area where he built his house over 60 years ago.
These videos are nothing but a pleasure you watch. IMO this is blacksmithing at it's finest and I thank you for letting me in to your workshop to watch it take place.

I never truly appreciated just how much thought and precision went in'to the creation of a pickaxe "until now", i don't think i will ever view pickaxes the same way ever again Torbjorn, i will look at them and my mind will not see a pickaxe but more a piece of raw steel which has been transformed through several processes to what it has eventually become, a tool of convenience and importance. Peace and Love to You and Your's Sir.

I even made a quick and easy die (my first ever) to forge the wave in the brackets where the D-rings sit. Also i started forging a hunting knive for my Dad because he was my third hand while forging the D-Rings. Damn, its so much fun!
All this work for a single pickaxe cannot be economically feasible. It always amazes me to watch a skilled craftsman at work. That pickaxe is a work of art as much as it's a tool. I have to admit I had a brief moment of terror when you brought out the hot glue gun. For a second I was afraid you were going to break out a "Live Laugh Love" stencil and burn it into the handle.
I found a great old 5lbs pickaxe head in the woods during a walk one day, and for 3-4 years I had been just waiting for a good chance to use it (I live in Florida and almost all of the ground is sand). A friend needed help breaking old concrete on their land and I brought it just for fun. It was amazing. The normal tool for breaking concrete in the states is a sledgehammer, and you just smash the concrete into bits. I was able to break it into bigger chunks, and use the pickaxe to pry and lift pieces that were struck. The bigger chunks were easier to clean up, and the tool was much lighter than a sledgehammer. My friends laughed when they saw it, but they were very eager to try it after they saw how useful it was.
This t-shaped pickaxe manufactured is especially preferred by those working in mines where hard coal is extracted. Apart from this, the pointed part of the digging is very useful for displacing large rocks in the soil. The other flat mouth part of the pickaxe also serves to break the soil in the form of clods.
Even though I don't possess the skill to make a pickaxe, I have swung enough of them to know the value of a good one.
