    I Ran one on the old ACR out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It was old and I worked the hell out of but never burnt it up!

    that burnt out regulator will offer good trade-in value on a new machine. LOL! If HH was still running the show at CP he would demand that the burnt one be repaired using parts from an IC regulator. LOL!

    FF's did a good job, had to assess how to tackle the blaze, extinguished using tank supply, no lives at stake, looked like a 3 man crew. Well done.

      Not a FF but a good point was made. It was no immediate threat to the surrounding stuff/no one was trapped so best to take your time and access any potential risks including it rolling away, hydraulic lines rupturing, etc. No point in getting your foot run over since you had to race in there to be all macho macho!

    Funny thing bout this is I get a lot of people accusing even me of being a troublemaker or a shit disturber for exposing stuff like this to you tube when in fact it IS true and doing this kinda thing coulda saved a shit ton of probs..kudos from one rail fan to another..keep on railin!

    I operated ballast regulators on Canadian national , they run hot and they got a lot of dust and dirt buildup on them, you really got it keep on top of your maintenance or they will become a large barbecue! It always hurts to lose a good machine

    Love the post FNDEL, I enjoy reading the comments by the firefighter wannabes. I ask you, just WHAT was it they were going to save by rushing in there? The regulator was a total loss when the first unit pulled up. Rule #1. Go home after your shift.

    That's a costly mistake. Theres probably been hundreds of these incidents that haven't been reported on, and my guess is that ballast regulator costs a pretty penny

      to me it looks like they were traveling or had just turned regulator around because it because its cab is pointed forward and center jack is down or operator lowered it to extinquish fire ,both his and mk4 extinquishers were used

      @@sureman13 yeah not sure what they were doing exactly but the fire did start on the front end of the regulator and there were tons of electrical sparks shooting out through the whole thing before I started recording so I think you’re right

    Looks like someone switched that hopper into the track where the ballast regulator was parked. They make good bumpers albeit slightly burned after impact...😮

      @@whiteknightcat You are correct. Blowing up the screen shows you to be correct. I have seenbin my career two incidences where cars were humped into a track and damaged track gang equipment. Odd that a regulator would catch fire on it's own. Fuel leak maybe?

      A ballast regulator is like any other motor vehicle - it uses fuel like gasoline or diesel, it's got oil and lubricants, an electrical system (which you could see sparking all over the place), and combustible plastics.

    I watched the same kind of sparks come out of a burning S.U.V. when they hit it with water last week. Golf ball sized . I kept my distance. I wondered if it was a Hybrid and the glowing sparks were from the Battery power plant

      @@stevebean1822 Yes, when magnesium is hot and burning, putting water on it causes a reaction where it releases oxygen and actually burns more intensely, producing the bright white sparks.

      I don’t think they are allowed to just drive out across active tracks in the rail yard without making sure it’s safe. If they parked or drove in the wrong area they could get hit causing another problem.

      The second fire engine that comes into scene near the end of the video was on street pumping water into the trainyard using a fire hydrant, that’s how they had so much water

      I think since it was a total hull loss, they were more interested in keeping the sleepers / ties from burning, and what little they did was in the name of training. No sense in getting too gung ho when you are trying to teach fire science.

      My guess is that the department wasnt sure of the different chemicals they had to deal with. Fighting fires with a one way approach can lead to disasters.
