Title: Cross of Iron 1977. STORYLINE: 1943, on the Russian front, decorated leader Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is promoted to Sergeant after another successful mission. Meanwhile, upper-class arrogant Prussian Captain Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell) is assigned as the new commander of his squad. After a bloody battle of Steiner's squad against the Russian troops led by the brave Lieutenant Meyer (Igor Galo), who dies in combat, the coward Stransky claims that he led his squad against the Russian and requests to be awarded with the Iron Cross to satisfy his personal ambition together with that of his aristocratic family. Stransky gives the names of Steiner and of the homosexual Lieutenant Triebig (Roger Fritz) as witnesses of his accomplishment, but Steiner, who has problems with the Army's chain of command and with Stransky's arrogance, refuses to participate in the fraud. When Colonel Brandt (James Mason) gives the order to leave the position in the front, Stransky does not retransmit the order to Steiner's squad, and they are left alone, surrounded by the enemy and have to fight to survive.
Better than this one only "Nothing new on the Western Front",the 1st. version in b&w.This considering the gernan point of view. But the russians also made good antiwar movies, after the death of Stalin,of course. The problem for us in the West is that you need subtitles or a good dubbing. The russian people as the german people are fed up with wars. They know it is useless The common people are always the loosers.
The old colonel certainly didn't shy away from making a desperate last stand as a rear-guard unit, deciding to lead a counter-attack, while being vastly outnumbered and overrun! And what a morale boost for his men it was just seing him in combat! Panic went away instantly.
This film was made a few years after my Discharge in 1973. I generally shy away from watching war movies, most are poorly made. I didn't watch it until 1990 when a buddy had the CD and he had played it many times before I would watch. This has to be the best WW ll movie out to date. I read the book about 10 years ago when I picked it up at a thrift store in paperback. Although this movie is a strong WW ll flick, one of the best of its genre, the book is 100X stronger, it's a hell of a read and I had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend it to anybody that likes this movie (and it's a great movie), read the book. It's a true classic!
Cross of lron 1977. During World War II, Cpl. Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is a well-respected member of the German military and a recipient of the Iron Cross, Germany's highest military honor. Envious of Steiner's award, Capt. Hauptmann Stransky (Maximilian Schell) clashes with Steiner while leading soldiers into battle along the Russian front. Desperate to receive his own Iron Cross, Stransky takes the credit for a significant attack and sparks a heated rivalry with Steiner.
@@johnathandaviddunster38 It is estimated that some four and a half million 2nd Class Iron Crosses were awarded during World War II, and 300,000 of the 1st Class.
I've watched this great movie quite a few times over the years since I first saw it when I was a lad of about 13 or 14, not too many years after it came out, certainly before 1980. I would have been entirely ignorant of Sam Peckinpah and only learned of his reputation and cinematic skills later as an adult. I'm in awe of that man's talent and skills so underappreciated, even unknown by many in his audiences and the wider cinema going public. I thank you deeply for the upload and hope that it stays up a good long effing time so that I might watch it again later. - Mark, Australia.
An absolute brilliant brilliant casting led by the legend actors James Mason James Coburn at his absolute best here. The ending is amazing showing Stiener James Coburn laughing knowing that Stransky was always going to live, no matter the situation he is found to be in. The factory scene with the tanks, was brilliantly done showing just how powerful they are.

All grittiness and insanity of war. Not a action movie where the good guys win with a big grin on their faces , but men trying to survive the horror of war. 🙄

Title: Cross of Iron 1977.
STORYLINE:
1943, on the Russian front, decorated leader Rolf Steiner (James Coburn) is promoted to Sergeant after another successful mission.
イゴールガロ氏は 美男ですよね❗
Better than this one only "Nothing new on the Western Front",the 1st. version in b&w.This considering the gernan point of view. But the russians also made good antiwar movies, after the death of Stalin,of course. The problem for us in the West is that you need subtitles or a good dubbing. The russian people as the german people are fed up with wars. They know it is useless The common people are always the loosers.
losers not loosers
Fistful of Dynamite makes the same point
The old colonel certainly didn't shy away from making a desperate last stand as a rear-guard unit, deciding to lead a counter-attack, while being vastly outnumbered and overrun! And what a morale boost for his men it was just seing him in combat! Panic went away instantly.
War is the continuation,of politics,in other means! love this movie!
One off the best ww2 movies ever with a great cast!
The best war film All time
This film was made a few years after my Discharge in 1973.
Oh, My! What a pleasant surprise! I've searched on-line for this movie for some time and suddenly it appears! Thank you. So very well done.
5 million iron crosses were awarded in ww2 some no doubt for peeling potatoes 😅😅😅
This version is censored from the the original 1977 film however.
@@johnathandaviddunster38 It is estimated that some four and a half million 2nd Class Iron Crosses were awarded during World War II, and 300,000 of the 1st Class.
Para mi es la mejor película de guerra y es de mi Director favorito 😂
For me it is the best war movie and it is one of my best favorites
Spain con Israel !
one of the best war movies and directors
Long time since I watch this film one of the better ones he's made
I've watched this great movie quite a few times over the years since I first saw it when I was a lad of about 13 or 14, not too many years after it came out, certainly before 1980.

Wow
Thanks for uploading this. Been a long time since I've seen it.
One of my all time favorite movies.
Thank you for posting this movie! I found it by accident since the title is a bit off.
In the last scene, I have never seen anybody laugh like that. For me, that is one of the greatest scenes in the movie.
Considering how the ending had to be bodged after they ran out of time & money I always thought it worked rather well.
Great movie. I have seen it a few times .
Thank you, thank you, thank you for uploading, GREAT movie !!!!!!!!
Fantastic movie, a must watch .
That has got to be the best war film ever made!!!!!
Klassischer Film!
"God is the Devil. He just doesn't know it." Feber Steiner.
Not Feber..... Feldwebel!
@@petermuller7681 Danke! Es tut mir leid. I saw the movie in the 1970s. Mein gedanken ist schlecht.
Very good war film accurate in a lot of ways extremely realistic it shows people are the same everywhere
How true, the final quote.
The Bastard is trying to take Ukraine
damm good ww2 movie even in 2024
An absolute brilliant brilliant casting led by the legend actors James Mason James Coburn at his absolute best here. The ending is amazing showing Stiener James Coburn laughing knowing that Stransky was always going to live, no matter the situation he is found to be in.
The factory scene with the tanks, was brilliantly done showing just how powerful they are.
Steiner - Das Eiserne Kreuz. Bummer that the main actors didn´t get a decent haircut (undercut) in the style of the 1940s before.
One of the greats!
M'y favorite War film
That war was hell on earth and hell is where we belong.
