Each movie is referenced in other movies & also on shows, songs, albums & mixtapes. They’re also still relevant 30 plus years later and you could have your black card revoked if you’ve never seen them.

Hearing you guys talk about these films from your POV of actually living in the communities that these films portray is very eye-opening, I understand these much better on a deeper level. Menace was better but Boyz in the hood is my fav of them both tho.. because menace give it to you from the perspective of the misguided that make the hood so dangerous. You see how they come to the conclusions they do when they only have each other to ask questions to. Why I feel Boyz resonated with me better is u got alot of balance from different perspectives....u had the OG in furious kicking knowledge and letting the people in the film along with viewers watching what's goin on in the world. U have the every day run of the mill stuff that happens to teens with interactions with each other, the opposite gender and the cops ...u had the trash black cop smile at trey as a kid but that same cop pulls a gun on him years later thinking he was gang banging. U had the dynamic with dough and Ricky with their mom. The movie hits on alot of points. Menace hits on things that happen in the hood but it's more tunnel vision of the vicious cycle of violence.
I agree 150%.....I liked the fact that John Singelton who also did Baby Boy had a knack for writing 3 dimensional fully formed characters, unlike the Hughes Brothers who portrayed all of their characters as psychopaths with no heart. By deep diving into the psyche of the character it allows you to better understand why a certain character reacts to situations the way that they do.

To me both films were very impactful. The narrative of each film showcased a different perspective of LA through the lens of the protagonist. In Boys N the Hood Tre was from the environment but he wasn't active. He was surrounded by gangs, drugs, and police brutality but he didn't let it consume. Alot of the reason why trey didn't get caught up is because he had that structure at home with his Pops Furious. Even when he was about to go ride with Dough and his crew the way he was brought up by Furious caused him to tell them to let him out. Whereas Kaine was from the environment but he was an active participant in the activities. He didn't have the structure Trey had due to his parents dying at an early age so he had to fend for himself. He had his grandparents but they weren't able to get through him . He had some positive influences in his life like Mr Butler and Ronnie but they weren't able to get through to him until it was too late.

To me Monster was a next level shooter. In a moving vehicle at dark night with no lights, he is hungry and has shades on with an AK(aren't known for accuracy but more for power) and he tagged his opponents?! He was naturally talented. Even if you looked back in the movie when they were playing on the game duck hunt he was a shooter. Monster legit was talented l, could of made a great soldier
That scene was kinda unrealistic because he was loading the AK up with bare hands any real shooter knows that a no no and 9 times out if 10 Monster been carded by lapd so yeah that was hella unrealistic😂😂
Love this podcast. Finally black films get the look and respect they deserve. That being said, Menace is prolly more realistic x needs to be shown today in college or high school frfr
This is a tough 1......Personally I feel that Boyz N The Hood wins for 3 major reasons: 1.) We never got a chance to see Tupac Amaru Shakur play either Kane/ O-Dog.....We know that realistically they wouldn't have made him waste his talents playing Sharif 2.) Boyz N The Hood showed something that know other film had before or since; we had never seen what happens when someone takes their love 1 home after they've been murdered. 😪 3.) I personally feel that Boyz N The Hood was alot better drama & while it had it's stereotypical gangbanging moments it also showed people who lived in the hood as 3 dimensional characters.
I feel like Boyz N The Hood is more of how people that grew up in the Hood see ourselves, Juice and Menace II Society is more of the start of the caricature that was created in the 90s about that existence. The "monsters" if you will. Its real easy to see villains in Juice and Menace unless you truly understand the context. They require a deeper understanding than most people have, so it is easy to lose the message. While Boyz N The Hood is such good storytelling that you can connect with everyone in it without needing to actually have lived it.
I would have to say Menace 2 Society is a better movie because of the Raw Delivery . Boyz in the hood is something that is more appealing to what the world may want to believe the hood to be . Menace showed the untold raw truth of what happens in the hood , and everything that the world is afraid to accept. Like y’all pointed out Boyz in the hood still had an essence of hope , The world needed a movie like Menace to witness how all hope can be destroyed for a young kid without ever knowing it was a thing .
You took the words out of my mouth, but I would have to say boys n the hood was more important and needed because in M2S there is no hope, and when Caine finally wanted to make a change he was killed, but I think M2S would have been different had Tupac been in the film🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️

Great episode and I agree Juice is in a class of it's own love the Tupac Ice Cube comparison and Menace II Society is like a Boyz N Da Hood part two and I think Deep Cover and Into Deep would be dope to compare and y'all are right to continue Boyz N Da Hood the focal point would be Ricky son and Menace II Society continuing with O Dog or even Ronnie son
I think he's confused cause Boyz in the hood is the only move that had football...And Boyz in the hood paved the way and sat the stage for both of those moves...
Instead of comparing Juice, South Central would of been a better comparison, In a Sequel of Menice O-Dog would basically become Og Bobby Johnson's character going to prison changing his way
I identified more with Juice because I am from the east coast and the music was in my headphones at the time. I appreciated the cinematography of Boyz after the fact. Menace felt more aggressive, almost like a horror version of the others. It didn’t really have a hero either, so there was really nowhere for the “straight” viewer to find themselves. 1. Juice, 2. Boyz, 3. Menace in terms of MY enjoyment.
Its not alot movies on the level of juice to compare it to but one that one is really good thas underrated that is a good comparison is strapped with fredro star and bokeem woodbine
Boys in the Hood feels better because of the quality of actors. But Menace to Society felt more honest about what was going on in certain neighborhoods. But there's no wrong answer.
Boys n da hood is the most impactful to me, because it was not only Ice cube’s acting debut, but it introduced Nia Long, Cuba Gooding , and Morris Chestnut. We also got to see the beginning of Regina King’s acting range. Juice was 2nd in my opinion because it wasn’t just a hood movie, but it was a psychological thriller, and Tupac’s acting debut was superb! Other than Larenz Tate’s amazing character portrayal, I didn’t care too much for Menace to Society, because it was too raw, and triggering.
Ramona Askew.... People Like Menace More Because It Shows The Brutal Reality Of Living In The Hood Where The Wrong Words Can Get You Killed Any Form Of Disrespect Can Get You Killed A Place Where If Something Wants What You Have They Will Take Your Life For It Brutal Honest Reality Boyz N The Hood Is A Classic And It's One Of My Favorite Movies But It's Too Sanitized.

Both Classics, but if i had to choose than Boyz in da Hood was the better film in my opinion because I felt like it had a stronger cast and the storytellinng was better.
Deepest Line Boyz- Ice 🧊 “They either don’t know don’t show”
Menace- Tie: Charles H Dutton “The hunt is on” Bill Duke” You know you done f-d up right”!!!
If y’all watch boyz n mennace together record it! Big content‼️
Recommendation- Lean on me
Boyz in the hood is the Martin and menace Is the Malcolm..
Paid in full
Im surprised south central hasnt been reviewed or brought up
Doughboy Becomes Fudge from Higher Learning
Great episode and I agree Juice is in a class of it's own love the Tupac Ice Cube comparison and Menace II Society is like a Boyz N Da Hood part two and I think Deep Cover and Into Deep would be dope to compare and y'all are right to continue Boyz N Da Hood the focal point would be Ricky son and Menace II Society continuing with O Dog or even Ronnie son
Yo y'all gotta do Strapped
Please tell me y’all got baby boy in the works lol
Y’all forgot “Tales from the Hood” lol
You guys should compare Menace II Society with Set It Off
Two totally different movies. That's a bad idea
Exactly not even in the same stratosphere....While "M2S" was strictly a period piece Set-It-Off may be 1 of the top 10 heist films of all time
is that Stacey from Menace 2 society
I think he's confused cause Boyz in the hood is the only move that had football...And Boyz in the hood paved the way and sat the stage for both of those moves...
Baby boy next!!
Instead of comparing Juice, South Central would of been a better comparison, In a Sequel of Menice O-Dog would basically become Og Bobby Johnson's character going to prison changing his way
This messed up Funniest line - “ay homie you need some help” by MC eight
I identified more with Juice because I am from the east coast and the music was in my headphones at the time. I appreciated the cinematography of Boyz after the fact. Menace felt more aggressive, almost like a horror version of the others. It didn’t really have a hero either, so there was really nowhere for the “straight” viewer to find themselves. 1. Juice, 2. Boyz, 3. Menace in terms of MY enjoyment.
Please do blue hill ave
Its not alot movies on the level of juice to compare it to but one that one is really good thas underrated that is a good comparison is strapped with fredro star and bokeem woodbine
Boys in the Hood feels better because of the quality of actors. But Menace to Society felt more honest about what was going on in certain neighborhoods. But there's no wrong answer.
New Jersey Drive underrated film about hood storys.
Have yall heard the fan theory that Furious is Doughboy's dad?
Ok I hear y'all on Monsta and I agree but how come no mention of Awax
@@vincentharris2259 of course. Tone explained it perfectly for me, in Menace there did not appear to be any hope. Although a great movie, that’s why I didn’t care for it 🤷🏽♀️
New Jersey Drive was Menace 2 Society all over again, guys who had all the chances in the world to make a difference but still was caught up in the same ish, more so New Jersey drive, because when Caine finally wanted better for himself and Ronnie he was killed🤷🏾♂️
Can u review snow in the bluff
Here’s full Circle ⭕️ Fellas: 2Pac was supposed to play Shariff in Menace to Society!! But he got in a fight with co-director Allen Hughes!!
Any chance of you guys doing The Wire and Snowfall?
