Choosing Supplements for Prostate Cancer Part: 1

  • PCRI's executive director, Mark Scholz, MD, provides general guidelines for judging the efficacy (the ability to produce the desired result) of vitamins and supplements for prostate cancer.
1:35 There is a lot of interest in supplements for prostate cancer for a few reasons. Compared to other types of cancer, many men with prostate cancer will live with the condition for a long time. This means that they have the opportunity to experiment with different supplements and they will usually be interested in supplements for their general health. The ability to track PSA levels, too, means that men have an objective measure to determine the effect of a supplement on their prostate cancer.
2:44 One example of a popular supplement for prostate cancer was a collection of Chinese herbs called PC-SPES. When it was released, many men with prostate cancer experienced PSA declines. However, people began to noticed estrogenic effects-breast enlargement and blood clots, and the supplement was taken off the market. Despite its failure, PC-SPES does offer hope that alternative medicines can produce objective benefits.
3:50 Many people who have given up on Western medicine will go places like Mexico for herbal concoctions. In most cases, men who seemed to benefit from these treatments also seemed to have estrogenic side effects. This suggests that these supposed natural remedies are actually adulterated with pharmaceutical agents that are the actual active ingredients.
4:48 The first thing to ask yourself when assessing a supplement is to ask whether or not it works for you. For example, glucosamine and chondroitin are two supplements that can alleviate arthritic pain for some people, but not for everyone. It is reasonable to try one of these supplements for a few months, and then determine whether or not you are benefiting.
5:43 Another way to determine the quality of a supplement is to consider the source. Does the person or company selling the substance have a reputation for making quality products? Do they follow good business practices? Is their marketing pitch based on solid scientific evidence?
6:44 Another way to judge whether or not a vitamin or supplement is good for you is to check blood levels. Rather than taking vitamins at random, a physician can check your blood for vitamin levels and determine whether or not you have a particular vitamin deficiency. Vitamin D and vitamin B12 are two common deficiencies, but if you are not deficient, then there is no benefit to taking more.

Being a native, healthy, proud Texan and a fact based 77 year old CPA, the obvious best truthful advice on prostate cancer comes from Dr Scholz and PCRI. Many of my fellow colleagues get their prostates removed ASAP, with no real discussion. The smaller the town the faster. This information should be required of all urologist and caner doctors.

By far the best explanations, straight to the point and really informative videos on youtube about prostate and prostate cancer.
My question to mr Mark is what do you think overmasturbation role is to prostate enlargement and/or cancer. Is it true there are complications if this habit is chronic and there might be testosterone issues because of it or even englargement ? There are too many opinions about this on the internet.

I've been a fan of Glucose Chondroitin for decades. I started taking it for a sore knee when a co-worker suggested it. It did help, but at one point I stopped taking it. After a while there were days when I needed a cane to get around and I resumed taking it.
I was diagnosed with the beginnings of prostate cancer about 6 months ago and I'd recently watched what I felt was a well presented YT video about high dose Melatonin. I had been taking low doses already for sleep (it wasn't helping much) so I decided to see if I could find the dose where the benefits exceed the problems such as sleeplessness that can arise. I haven't found the magic dose yet, but I want to continue the "quest".
I've been sifting through and deleting most of the deluge of melatonin/cancer videos that YT has thrown at me since I watched one, but I'm glad I watched this video. About to watch Part 2. Thanks.

I got my psa down from 36 to 31in five months this year with no side effects whatsoever. Everyday,i eat a cooked tomato, along with tomato ketchup and puree. When cooked along withbaked beans, this concoction tastes quite good! Also, everyday,i have portion of broccolinor caulieflower. I stay off dairy products and sugar as well. Have biopsy next week for p.c.,so hopefully, tumour will have shrunk somewhat

Just more wise-sounding advice that is indisputably “true” in the abstract, but practicality speaking non-actionable. How would I or anyone else be able to discern in advance the motives or reliability of a product manufacturer or marketer? Telling somebody not to take a supplement if it doesn’t come from a reputable source is like telling somebody not to board an airplane that isn’t mechanically sound. Not only is such information not readily available to the average person, the data itself is frequently ambiguous so that even experts would disagree as to its meaning.

Does doing a 96 hour water fast affect a PSA test compared to a non fast test ? What are your thoughts?

Is creatine safe for prostate cancer patients?

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm on Active Surveillance and would like to take creatine for it's cognitive and muscle maintenance effects but I hesitate taking it. I did ask my PCA doctor about it and he didn't think there would be a problem using creatine. Still I hesitate a bit.
