  • The Battle of the Pyramids, also known as the Battle of Embabeh, was a major engagement fought on 21 July 1798 during the French Invasion of Egypt. The French army, under Napoleon Bonaparte, scored a decisive victory against the forces of the local Mamluk rulers, wiping out almost the entire Ottoman army located in Egypt. It was the battle where Napoleon employed the divisional square tactic to great effect. Actually a rectangle, the deployment of the French brigades into these massive formations repeatedly threw back multiple cavalry charges by the Mamluks.

I think I read somewhere that the Battle of the Pyramids helped start the modernization of the Ottomans. Because of the advanced weaponry and tactics the French possessed, the Ottomans realized how far behind they were and would begin their military reforms to pattern their army to be more like that of Western Europe

    • @fastsnake

The whole XIX was hard for the Ottoman empire. They tried to modernize their army, but the European powers were too much advanced at that time.

The Ottoman did modernize its military, by forming a "new model" army based on the latest European standard. This army called "Nizam-i Cedit", but this modernization failed due to its old-fashioned elite army, Janissary, who saw Nizam-i Cedit as a threat to their existence, revolted and dethroned Ottoman Sultan Selim III, then dissolved Nizam-i Cedit.

Sorry this depiction is completely inaccurate. Ottoman infantry were not involved. The Mamelukes who ruled Egypt on behalf of the Ottomans were a unique warrior class who were all mounted (i.e. a cavalry force). Estimates of the numbers the French faced vary considerably but it is agreed by most historians at about 6-7,000 mounted accompanied by about 12-15000 retainers (servants who followed on foot) and fellahin (Egyptian peasants). The only infantry were a few thousand Sekkans (mainly Balkan mercenaries) and Cairo Janissaries (Egyptian militia) protecting the artillery dug in at Embabeh a village on the Nile several miles away and on the French left. The French formed several large squares with the small amount of cavalry they had available in the middle and placed their artillery at the corners at the front of each square, facing the long line of Mamelukes who made several wild charges (their only tactic!) but were shot down in front of the French squares. Over 2000 Mamelukes were thought to have been killed with another 1000 or so drowned trying the escape across the Nile. Several thousand Egyptian fellahin etc, also died for total French losses of 29 killed and 290 or so wounded.

On February 20, he captured Elarish Castle and continued on his way. There were occasional revolts of the Kölemen along the way, but he could not stop the advance of the army. He captured Gaza on 24 February and Jaffa on 5 March. 4000 Muslims were executed here to intimidate
On the 40th day of the movement, the French army arrived in front of Akka
Napoleon started propaganda alongside his attacks. He wanted to attract the people to his side and achieve a decisive victory.
The increasingly severe French attacks had yielded results 1.5 months after the siege began. The French had captured the Ali Burcu of the castle. But at the end of the same day, when Cezzar Ahmed Pasha detonated the arsenal in that area, the French attacks were halted and they had to withdraw from Ali Burcu
On the 52nd day of the siege, around 3000 Nizam-ı Cedid soldiers arrived from Rhodes Island. The already worn-out French army became demoralized upon hearing this. Against him was a larger army. Napoleon no longer thought of anything he could do.
On the 64th day of the siege, Napoleon made a sudden retreat. Because he understood that he could not capture this castle. The plan to colonize the Far East failed with the defeat of the Akkadian Siege. He withdrew, saying, "If the Turks had not stopped me in front of Akka, it would have been impossible to conquer the whole east", and left Sidda and Egypt to the Ottomans. Then the Paris Peace Act was signed with the Ottoman Empire. Napaleon accepted the defeat

Not really possible to do that in flat, open terrain like most of Egypt. Egypt is notoriously easy to conquer if you can get through the desert. Most people live in a flat, undefended, densely-populated area on either side of one river. And the Nile river makes transportation for invaders easy too.

Many commanders in the french navy were noble. When the Revolution began, many of them were kikced away and new ones were promoted. Obviously, they were less experimented, unlike on the ground where there is always battles where a new generation of commanders can gain experience. Not sure if a French Nelson could do better than the original one with less experienced captain under his command.

“There are two great virtues that elevate people: The bravery of the man and the chastity of the woman. In addition to these two virtues, there is a virtue that honors both men and women. To be so devoted to one's homeland that one can sacrifice one's life without hesitation. Turks are heroes who possess these qualities and virtues. That is why Turks can be killed, but they cannot be defeated."
