For folks that are into torque specs, the factory torque spec on the drain plug is 106 in. lbs (12 Nm). The leveling plug torque is 71 lb. in (8 Nm) if the thread size (not hex removal bit) is M10; or 26 ft lbs (35 Nm) if the thread size is M20. I believe the thread size in this video is M20 - which is removed using a 10mm hex bit. The INITIAL Fluid fill specs are 6.34 qts (6 L) if overhauling transmission to include main control and torque converter drain. For Main control overhaul or replace (without trans overhauls is 5.28 qts (5 L); or 4.23 qts (4 L) if just draining and filling. Then cycle thru each gear, bring up to operating temp and with engine running in park, add slowly until fluid is level with leveling plug hole.
I change the transmission fluid in my 2009 Escape every 30,000 miles using Motorcraft Mercon LV. The double drain and fill is an easy job and it gives me peace of mind.
Awesome work. This is the only way I service our 6F35 and 6F50. I remembered trying to use the BG machine and it was a pain trying to hook it up to the cooler lines. I do our fusion yearly or every 15-20k. Fluid is always nice and red. We are at 100k and shifts like new.
I really appreciate you saying "they pop" when referring to taking the check plug out because,without that warning, when I took mine off I would have swore that I just broke something off in my trans...but,everything was cool! lol
You can add transmission fluid at the top of the transmission by removing the vent, but you need the side plug removed to determine correct level. Draining the transmission and adding 4 quarts through the vent is pretty close to correct level
I drain and fill my Escape trans fluid every 7,000 miles with Castrol Transmax Mercon LV and it’s red from one change to the next. It was not when I used Motocraft Mercon LV. You can find the Castrol Transmax Dexron VI / Mercon LV at Home Depot. Best stuff I have used in this trans. Shifts smooth as butter and no torque converter shudder. If your fluid is black when you do a drain and fill, then do 3 to 4 more drain and fills in a row or over the next couple thousand miles. Then do a drain and fill every 7,000 miles and it will come out red from one drain to the next and your trans will perform amazingly. Takes 4-1/4 quarts of fluid.
My wife’s car is way over due so i will be ordering some fluid for it now and get this done. Will definitely get enough to do it twice to try and get most that old fluid out! Thanks for the great videos!!!
I changed the fluid on my 16 Fusion at 36, 37, and 42K miles. On the second fluid change the fluid looked like a muddy purple but better on the third change. I drive it to get it hot then check for full with the wheel turned all the way to the right to get at the plug. 3/8" hex socket fit nice in mine. With 3 changes I've done the fill level may not even be necessary because I know how much it took every time. And the amount has been consistent. I'll be changing it again on my next oil change. Currently at 60K miles.
2nd generation fusion and Chevy cruise had the same transmission. I told my buddy about changing the fluid because he never does and he says oh no, you'll ruin it by changing it. Ok good luck with that. I'll be changing mine every 2 years thanks 😂😂. I have a 14 fusion btw.
Did I hear you correctly? 150,000 on a Trans fluid change. Boss as anal as I am about maintenance on my cars, that would drive me nuts! Odd how the Trans fluid on newer cars goes black like that. You do a lot of extra work just to bring us these videos and I for one want to thank you for it. It's refreshing to find a mechanic that cares about the result of his work and the quality of his work.
My Ram with the ZF 8 speed says it is "filled for life"... Bullshit. Changed the fluid and filter at 62k and it was black as could be. Funny ZF who builds the transmission says to change it every 50-70k. Glad I listened to them and not Ram...
Greetings, I drove our 2018 Escape to our nearest Ford dealer, I told the manager the transmission is slipping on all gears, both hwy & fwy but their mechanic said there's nothing wrong with the transmission. Returning home, I drove up a slight hill and you'd think I was learning how to drive stick shift; also, you can see the RPM fluctuate. Soon I'm take our SUV to a 2nd dealer & hope for the best. Your video is helpful if I have the strength to do the oil change myself. Thank you.
I fill these from the top, I just pour it in slow. I usually dump in 5 quarts and run it, hoping to get some of the crap out via the level plug. I had a Lincoln mkc couple months ago, unresponsive, shifted like shit. I ran about 10 quarts through it and it did fix it. That synthetic fluid is nasty looking, even at 60k. It comes out just as nasty on GM vehicles too
Hello again, I service mine Kuga's 6F35 and PTU every 10k miles. However finding the LV fluid here in the UK for sensible money is difficult, Ford UK charge around $55 per quart !!!!!
For this 2nd Generation 6F35 transmission 2013-2019 (?) there is no dipstick, like the 1st Generation has. If you don't have the pump to fill it, use a trans funnel to fill from the top for the 2013-2015 (?) 6F35- look for the plastic cap (labeled ATF/automatic transmission fluid-if not covered in grime like mine) on top of the trans, to the left of the air filter box. Just did my '14 Escape (bought it used) at 108K miles and yeah, it was black...but didn't smell burnt (at least). I'll do it 2 more times and then every 30K miles. BUT the pump is your friend to fill the PTU/power transfer unit if you have the AWD (4WD) model. The PTU needs done every 30K miles too as it's close to the exhaust, etc. and don't forget the rear differential, both have limited access to the drain/fill hole(s)-you've been warned. 🙂
Just dang. I wish I had seen this 50k miles ago and didn't go by the Service book. I asked my local Ford dealer at the last oil change when it was time for a Trans fluid change. They said 150k. 94k now and only issue has been the purge valve. My 2012 Focus went to 198k before I traded it for a 2018 Focus. Traded my wife's 2015 Fusion for a 2018 on the same Day. So we have 2 2018 Fords. 1.5L Ecoboost on hers and 2.0L NA in mine.

I recently bought a 2016 Ford Escape with the 6F35 @ 77k miles. It shifted hard at speed when it downshifted to accelerate. I followed the procedure by FordTechMakuloco. After draining I added 4 quarts and took it out for a spin to warm up the transmission(which definitely shifted smoother especially the downshift. Removed the tire/wheel and leveled the car then removed the side plug expecting a little fluid to drain out but didn't get any. I added an additional half a quart but didn't still didn't get any real drainage. I stopped at that point. The car is shifting smoothly. Old fluid was nasty. May do another flush at next oil change. Which I do every 5k.

Been watching your videos, just got the call from the dealer today that my car needs a new long block. 2017 fusion 2.0. Luckily it’s under the power train, They say its back ordered and it will be here in about 3 weeks.
I did the level check the first time I changed mine, from then on I just use a marked paint mixing bucket to measure what comes out. 4.5 qts seems to put it right on the money and I fill from the top with a long skinny funnel through the vent cap. Have to pour it really slow or else it burps back up and makes a mess. The LV is some bizarre stuff but changing the fluid is super easy to do. I change mine often. Ive noticed for the longest time it was hard to find 5 qt jugs of LV, only could find in single qt bottles but now its readily available.
@@FordBossMe No. We have. super low mileage 2016 escape titanium with a 1.6. Got it from a family member down south and its kinda our spare vehicle. Sits in the garage a lot. I am getting ready to change careers so I'll not have my company provided vehicle after that (which ironically is also an Escape) so I'll start driving ours more.

Great info. I have done a drain and fill at every 30000 miles or less. Mine has been black. 85000 mi. I have changed it 3 times recently. To get new fluid.
VW really got the wet clutch DSG right as far as modern transmissions go. Very strong and sporty. Easy filter and fluid changes almost like an oil change, and the fluid cools the clutches to make them last a very long time. Still have to change fluid at 40k but I’ve seen many over 400k with nothing but scheduled fluid and filter, even 650k miles with no issues. Sometimes the Mechatronic unit goes out or the Dual Mass flywheel but it’s not a huge issue like most transmission problems are.
The recommended service is a triple drain and fill. Capacity is 4 liters. 4.27 quarts. I use the vent hole. A good funnel with vinyl tube. I put PTFE tape on the drain plug thread.
Well you are on it Whatbinrecomend is by every 30k and no need to triple fill anything There is a reason why my recommendations work better than the factory bud
I've done alot of oil analysis on my super duties, trans and engine, I've learned two things, the trans interval on a 6r140 is really only about 50k on factory fluid. Valvoline multi atf red label max life in the maroon bottle is the best fluid to use as it is the only dex 6 enhanced and mercon lv compatible fluid you can get thats not oem, on the half tons and super duty trucks in our fleet, trans is 50k interval and 30k interval respectively. I don't trust Ford fluids, I think they are not as good as some people say. I've done early fluid changes and even at a longer interval, it still looks good.

The gentleman is correct changing the oil a little bit at a time right now is going to be your best bet because if you change too much at one time it may mess up the transmission worse, unfortunately it may already be messed up and you're just on borrowed time

Because in your video you commented that the color is not necessarily a reliable indicative because now these boxes are making the color turn black quickly, and as I saw in your video the oil you removed from that Ford was blacker than mine, currently my car has not had any transmission problem
I do mine with a cheap Walmart transmission fluid funnel that fits right into the rubber hose where you take the vent off Works every time it it never spills a drop
We bought a 2018 Escape Titanium with 30k and I plan to do this very soon. I hope I don't have issues with the tranny over the years if I do it every 30k. Thanks for making this video. Looks easy enough, but wish I had a lift! I hate working from my back all the time.
You must do 2 to 3 drain and fills if you do it every 30,009 miles. I just do it every 10,000 miles, it takes 10 minutes. I fill through the vent hole and add 4-1/8 quarts.

@@Trekopolisjust saw your comment. Yes, I fill it through the vent cap opening in the engine bay, I buy the gallon jug so it’s easy to pour in with a funnel. I’ve done the leveling procedure with the side bolt off while it’s running once. I change it so often I just drain it and fill it with 4-1/8 quarts. I know that’s not the most accurate method but my trans is original and I’ve done 12 drain and fills since I bought it with 94,000 miles and I have 165,000 miles now.

Thanks for the video. I recently picked up a 2014 Escape Titanium @ 84,200 miles. Visually, the engine compartment and overall package was very clean. I had to do a few costly repair to pass Maryland's notoriously hard inspection process(which I feel is a racket, but I digress...). It passed in Virginia, btw. Had to replace the combined muffler/catalytic converter assembly which was an all one piece item. The local independent shop I usually use did a transmission fluid change. The fluid looked exactly as you have shown here. His tech said it may be going up, but I feel that it may be a normal look on these transmissions after seeing your vid and others like it. Added Lucas transmission conditioner after change and no problems shifting. consistent more pronounced shit into second, but not really out of character with other cars I've owned. will possibly change fluid again after 10,000 miles. I feel the trick with this Escape is to religiously maintain it. Any suggestions otherwise? Thank you.
They did my Trans fluid on my 16 MKZ. Only got like 6.5 quarts out I guess. It's also a 13 hour Job to replace a $70 filter apparently so told them not to worry about it.
6F35, 6F50 and 6F55 (also the new 8 speeds) are all internal filters. Must remove transmission and split case to change filter which is why it's important to make sure you maintain your fluid to avoid plugging up your filter. If you still have warranty by all means but if you're out of warranty and don't want your transmission blowing up, change that fluid yourself. Simple drain and fill, you could also fill it slowly from up top, the vent hole. It's a vent so you have to make sure you don't go faster than air escaping or you'll make a mess.
If you keep changing the oil the filter is not an issue. Most transmissions have "screen" not a filter. If the transmission is wearing as it should the wear particles are so fine they flow through the screen - so it really shouldn't be catching anything. If your transmission has an issue and the clutches throw a few "chunks" that get caught in the screen it still shouldn't be an issue - plenty of screen area for the fluid to flow through and the chunks don't get circulated to clog a passage. If the transmission clutches throw enough "chunks" to clog the screen your transmission was toast anyway. Changing the screen wasn't going to fix the clutches that are failing.

A question, how can you put let's say 4 qts in that side hole cold, and expected it to not be spilling out a bunch once it's warm and expanded? The last time I change the transmission fluid in my 2017 Ford escape SE, the green little cap on the vent plug with the constant tension spring flew off somewhere in my engine bay. I finally found it about two hours later. When I change my transmission fluid this weekend, I’m going to do it the way you do by filling it through the check plug hole.
Haynes manual mis identifies the level plug. I had drained out 4.5 qts and refilled 7 qts up top and i said to myself something not right. Finally went to TH-cam and found this video and others . 2 qts thencame back out of the 10mm drain plug.
The wife just bought a 2020 ecosport 2.0L 4wd . It looks like the same transmission . So LV fluid also ? I change the oils on our cars . Saves a ton of money .
Ford boss I have 2014 fusion and every 30000 and never gets that black I'm gonna keep changing mine the way I been never had any problems my is a 6f35 only problem I get sometimes is down shifting on hill it down shifting into a to low of a gear then the speed car is going but besides that shifting is great 👍
I change my tranny fluid every 3rd oil change. If you stick to that rule your tranny will last waaaaaay longer. I'm not talking 10k oci's either. Your living in delusion if you think those kind of oci's are good.
Gee, how I wish you were local. My 2015 Ford escape is having some issues. And yes I was told on this car when I got it that all fluids where changed I asked about the tranny fluid and the salesperson said it wouldn't need changed til 150,000 miles, now I have just.a little over 100,000 miles and boom issues. I'm so upset and irritated. I would of serviced this a long time ago if I knew, think they just wanted it off there lot.
First I wanna say thanks for the advice on a previous video I commented about a power steering issue with a 17 F150. It was water intrusion in the connectors. His power steering works now. I also wanna add in relation to this video that my wife and I have a 17 honda fit with the CVT and I change the fluid every 30k miles. Since its a CVT. I dont want to risk it with that unit and I know what they cost. I will tell anyone with a CVT to have their fluid changed every 30k miles. Some people say they can go 70 80 or 100k and I'm like no not even in a standard automatic...

I done this and PTU. The rear diff has different views on refilling it. One is measure what you suck out. Two is fill to what looks like a level plug and three fill to 4 mm below level plug. I like to know what Ford’s would do. Let’s for example the half axle drive shaft oil seal leaks. The oil seal is replaced so what level would I fill up to?
What’s your opinion on the 5R55 series of transmissions? They have a bad reputation, but Ford put them in a lot of vehicles. Is it just a matter of proper maintenance?
Nice work. I have '16 explorer 2.3l ecoboost with 6f35 transmission that I just got. Shifts fine but when i step on it little harder and it downshifts from 6th to 5th gear, i can feel a thud(not sure how to explain it) I feel like it might be due to not enough fluid in transmission. It has 67k miles but i dont know when was teansmission serviced last since I just got the car. Also at higher speed and lowee torque, I can see the change in rpms up and down +/- 200rpms Any suggestions? Car is still under full 60 day warranty but I am not too confident that the this auto dilership(Autonation chrysler) knows what they are doing since the are not Ford specific. I am in Phoenix, AZ so if you have any good shop to suggest let me know.

@@FordBossMe My friend took his 2018 Titanium Escape AWD 2.0 turbo to the Ford Dealership today. His engine light came on. The code said that there was water detected inside the engine. The dealership said they will have to go for a 5 hour test to find where the water leak is. He wanted to know if the engine oil and the water are mixed together or the water burned threw the cylinders and if the engine is done for. He has the best warranty he can buy through Ford. What does he do if that water has mixed with oil. Where does he go with Ford now. A new engine or fixed under his warranty? He has 35,500 miles on his Escape. No other issues so far. I told him what you said about his PTU, Trans flushing and plugs. He's scared to death that Ford will screw him over. Thanks Ford Boss me. Shawn.
When i filled mine i took out the plastic plug in the vent and my long transmission funnel fits perfectly right in the rubber hose and holds it. Super easy to dump a few bottles of fluid in.
Yup i got the long green funnel can change the fluid in my fusion in about ten mins dont jack it up nothing easy job but 50$ a change im on 2nd drain in a week gunna do a 3rd to be sure just bought the car

Question: fill until overflows drain while engine running or off? I ask because I had engine running with fluid just at overfill line, then turned off engine (had not plugged yet) and fluid started coming out overflow.. so rushed to put cap back in.
Correct me if I’m wrong but the newer Ford/Lincoln transmissions essentially have a thermostat inside of the transmission so it cooks the fluid until it gets up to temp and is at the proper viscosity so that it provides a better and smoother shift
Momma's 1995 red ranger with 3.0l 25 years old with 237k ive serviced the trans every 35k with filter i sucked out 3 qts with a power sucker once a year and replace just as a safety PM. After the orginal service. Using walmarts supertech warren oil co. Mercon trans fluid 4 qt jug for 14 bucks. Like you said fluid is cheap. The trans is original. I worder if ill get 300k out of the trans?
I'm not sure of not but take lose the return line off the cooler and use the transmission pump to "flush" the old fluid out. Takes about 3 gallons to complete.
Hi Richard. A bit off topic, but I’ll ask anyways. Daughter’s 2011 Ford Escape 3.0. Leaking timing cover. I’d like to try this myself due to the high cost both of us can not afford. How difficult would this be for the DIY’er? Do you suggest replacing the lower intake gaskets at the same time? If so, can I lift the lower intake with the fuel rail still attached to change out the gaskets? Thanks in advance - Any other tips would be appreciated!
Well I do have a video on a edge that will give you an idea on how difficult it is it's not an easy job so if you look in my library and look at I think it's like a 2010 or 2011 edge water pump job you'll get an idea on what it will take even though it's not the same motor same principle though
I did a drain an fill on my mazda skyactiv transmission at 60k and it was almost black Did it again 20k later and only then did the fluid look new. Funny thing is Mazda says the transmission fluid is "lifetime" 🙄 I wouldn't dare test that theory
That's not good, I noticed these trans's are hard on fluid, usually around 30K the fluid starts to change color. I always changed the fluid in my flex every 30-40K and the fluid looks brand new and still shifts like it did I I bought it off the lot. It's at 265,000.

I've done my transit 3 times at 60k this long fluid exchanges are bunk. Mine was starting to act funny here and there. The fluid exchanges has made it run like new. Wished I'd have started at 30k. I will continue to do it every other oil change until it looks normal. The first fluid I got out was terrible. No way would it have lasted over 100K
We have a trans machine that we use it's not BG And when we do the flushes we don't do them through the lines We do what's called a running service where we take everything out of the pan I replace it with new and then while the vehicle is running mixing in we replace quart for Quart The new fluid gets mixed in and then as its mixing through were pulling out a partial of the old while mixing in new so as we're mixing in we're pulling out... we're mixing and we're pulling out over and over again eventually it gets really really clear And fresh like new new
this looks the same as my ford transit connect which i think is the same as a fusion I filled it from the top, was annoying to have to take the lift up and down. seems like its was reccomended to do it while it was running and to go through reverse, neutral, forward, iirc the tranny dumps quite a bit o fluid back into the resevoir when car is off.

Nothing to do with the EPA. Its marketing. Keep the cost of ownership to a minimum and use that to advertise how cheap it is to own a certain vehicle. They usually only advertise the first 100K of ownership. Neglecting maintenance in the first 100K takes thousands if not 100s of thousands of miles off the major powertrain components (engine, transmission, drive axles). The manufacturer only wants to get the car out of warranty as cheaply as they can. If the car drops dead at 100,000 miles they want to sell you a new one.
I have a 2010 Ford Fusion 2.5l with the 6F35 transmission. Today I did a drain and fill with the Valvoline Maxlife trans fluid. I did one drain and fill, and I will do one more. My question is does this trans take a filter? You can find filters to buy but I just watched a tear down video of this trans and I didn't see a filter.
I can do this on a 2018 Ford escape? My GFS escape has 35k miles and when it gets to 20-25mph it feels like a constant jerk hesitation and once you go over 35-40mph it goes smooth . Is that converter shudder? Read on some forums changing the fluid got rid of it. She's a yr past her 5 yr warranty
Mom has an 11 Malibu with the 6T40E which is basically a 6F35 and after about 36k miles the fluid is dark. I take it to the dealer and let them do a BG trans flush
I feel like they are running the transmission fluid to hot to turn it black like that. Toyota in the RAV4 with a cooler does the same thing at 40,000 miles. I don't know what they are doing but those transmissions do fail earlier than normal
What I did to get the fluid nice and clean in my 2011 Escape is to change it out once, drive it a thousand miles, and then change it again. So that way, the new fluid can work out all of the dirt and grime from the cracks and crevasses of the transmission. On my second change, the fluid came out really dark (almost black). Once I put the new fluid in, it's never changed color, and I'm already 2,000 miles in. If you change the fluid 2-3 times immediately, you will never get it clean. It takes time and patience with these transmissions. I must add that the older design 6F35 is MUCH easier to work on compared to the newer ones.
But how did u check if it's full, I have a 2012 ford escape and it's damn hard to read the dipstick. The fluid splashes different each time I take it out. Can you tell me how to check it properly? Thanks. I believe a drain and fill is 4.5 quarts right? Did u use motorcraft mercon LV or other?
@@justlg3359 What I do (I don't recommend this if your emergency brake doesn't work), let your engine warm up for 3 minutes. Put your E-brake on, and put your car into drive. Hop out and check it twice. You will have an accurate hot reading. Also, I used Valvoline ATF full synthetic fluid, which has been tested to work in Mercon IV transmissions. It can take anywhere from 5 1/2, to 6 quarts. Depending on how long you let the old fluid drain out.
Ford escape 2015 se, we just drained the transmission fluid, have done it twice. Was we suppose to do the drain plug and drain the also? I'm having so many issues and I need help
The drain plug is the only place that you're supposed to drain it from I don't know what you're really asking me because the way you're asking your question is kind of jumble up and it's confusing You pulled a little drain plug on the bottom you let it all drain out and you put the plug back in and then you pull the plug up by the CV axle that I show in the video and you keep filling it up until it starts spilling out then you let it stop spilling out put the plug back in run the vehicle for let's just take 15-20 minutes let it warm up and then recheck the fluid and it needs to be level with the fill eyelid that's it there's no other way to do it
My 2017 F150 is about to hit 40k miles. Do you reccomend a drain and fill or fluid flush? I always hear people say to avoid flushes because it can damage the transmission but I'm not sure if that's an old wives tale with modern day cars. What are your thoughts?
Depends on the "flush". If its a fluid exchanger that uses the transmission pump - its not going to cause an issue and you are getting close to 100% of the fluid out. Its also more expensive. If you are going to keep up on your transmission services dropping the plug and replacing the fluid in the pan will keep the fluid "fresh". You are doing that by starting at 40K. If you are towing and hauling doing it at 30K would be better - or even more often if you are know you are abusing the transmission with over burdening it. The transmission temperature gauge that your F150 has (most have - all?) will tell you real quick if you are over working the transmission.
Do the Ford Escapes have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid without having to get under the car? I have a 2019 and can't find one. Really appreciate it.
@Ford Boss Me Thank you. I think the Ford mechanics here in Atlanta try to fill through the breather, but your video makes more sense. They replaced the 2.0 motor under warranty 2 years ago, and it hasn't been right since. It's a 2019 w 27k miles. I'm original owner, no towing or hot rodding. Just gentle daily driver. Now noticed a small whine sound starting. Now it's off warranty. Just didn't want to get taken advantage of.
Follow up: My 2019 escape is still making a hard to hear whine when accelerated. Took to dealer a couple months ago and they said it was fine..Only 28k miles. Had engine replaced under warranty 2 years ago. Also had an front drive axel/cv boot replaced a year ago. Don't see any visible leaks. Dealer in Atlanta wants car for 3 days to diagnose now If they think it is in the trans, it will take 8 weeks to get evaluated. Then however long to replace or fix trans. Would it be advised to just start w a trans fluid replacement w my private mech and see what happens? That won't hurt it will it? Just figured we could look at the fluid that comes out and make an assessment. If its jet black or has something in it, then i can plan on it being gone for a while. Any suggestions appreciated.
That transmission takes about 9L of oil. When you pull the plug only about 4L of oil comes out. The torque converter holds half the oil. I've owned many vehicles and never had to change the transmission oil until recently. The 6F35 transmission has a huge filter and donut magnet to clean metal out of the fluid. The Transmission Control Module is not mounted on or in the transmission. Ford provides almost zero information to the home mechanic. FORD loves Ducking its customers.
For folks that are into torque specs, the factory torque spec on the drain plug is 106 in. lbs (12 Nm). The leveling plug torque is 71 lb. in (8 Nm) if the thread size (not hex removal bit) is M10; or 26 ft lbs (35 Nm) if the thread size is M20. I believe the thread size in this video is M20 - which is removed using a 10mm hex bit. The INITIAL Fluid fill specs are 6.34 qts (6 L) if overhauling transmission to include main control and torque converter drain. For Main control overhaul or replace (without trans overhauls is 5.28 qts (5 L); or 4.23 qts (4 L) if just draining and filling. Then cycle thru each gear, bring up to operating temp and with engine running in park, add slowly until fluid is level with leveling plug hole.
I change the transmission fluid in my 2009 Escape every 30,000 miles using Motorcraft Mercon LV. The double drain and fill is an easy job and it gives me peace of mind.
Awesome work. This is the only way I service our 6F35 and 6F50. I remembered trying to use the BG machine and it was a pain trying to hook it up to the cooler lines. I do our fusion yearly or every 15-20k. Fluid is always nice and red. We are at 100k and shifts like new.
I really appreciate you saying "they pop" when referring to taking the check plug out because,without that warning, when I took mine off I would have swore that I just broke something off in my trans...but,everything was cool! lol
Good practice to remove the fill plug first then the drain plug, just in case the fill plug can't be removed.
You can add transmission fluid at the top of the transmission by removing the vent, but you need the side plug removed to determine correct level. Draining the transmission and adding 4 quarts through the vent is pretty close to correct level
I drain and fill my Escape trans fluid every 7,000 miles with Castrol Transmax Mercon LV and it’s red from one change to the next. It was not when I used Motocraft Mercon LV.
You can find the Castrol Transmax Dexron VI / Mercon LV at Home Depot. Best stuff I have used in this trans. Shifts smooth as butter and no torque converter shudder. If your fluid is black when you do a drain and fill, then do 3 to 4 more drain and fills in a row or over the next couple thousand miles. Then do a drain and fill every 7,000 miles and it will come out red from one drain to the next and your trans will perform amazingly. Takes 4-1/4 quarts of fluid.
My wife’s car is way over due so i will be ordering some fluid for it now and get this done. Will definitely get enough to do it twice to try and get most that old fluid out! Thanks for the great videos!!!
I changed the fluid on my 16 Fusion at 36, 37, and 42K miles. On the second fluid change the fluid looked like a muddy purple but better on the third change. I drive it to get it hot then check for full with the wheel turned all the way to the right to get at the plug. 3/8" hex socket fit nice in mine. With 3 changes I've done the fill level may not even be necessary because I know how much it took every time. And the amount has been consistent. I'll be changing it again on my next oil change. Currently at 60K miles.
2nd generation fusion and Chevy cruise had the same transmission. I told my buddy about changing the fluid because he never does and he says oh no, you'll ruin it by changing it. Ok good luck with that. I'll be changing mine every 2 years thanks 😂😂. I have a 14 fusion btw.

Did I hear you correctly? 150,000 on a Trans fluid change. Boss as anal as I am about maintenance on my cars, that would drive me nuts! Odd how the Trans fluid on newer cars goes black like that. You do a lot of extra work just to bring us these videos and I for one want to thank you for it. It's refreshing to find a mechanic that cares about the result of his work and the quality of his work.
Most manufacturers don't recommend a trans service at all, so it's not really a surprise. Some claim the fluid is "lifetime"
My Ram with the ZF 8 speed says it is "filled for life"... Bullshit. Changed the fluid and filter at 62k and it was black as could be. Funny ZF who builds the transmission says to change it every 50-70k. Glad I listened to them and not Ram...

Greetings, I drove our 2018 Escape to our nearest Ford dealer, I told the manager the transmission is slipping on all gears, both hwy & fwy but their mechanic said there's nothing wrong with the transmission. Returning home, I drove up a slight hill and you'd think I was learning how to drive stick shift; also, you can see the RPM fluctuate. Soon I'm take our SUV to a 2nd dealer & hope for the best. Your video is helpful if I have the strength to do the oil change myself. Thank you.
I fill these from the top, I just pour it in slow. I usually dump in 5 quarts and run it, hoping to get some of the crap out via the level plug. I had a Lincoln mkc couple months ago, unresponsive, shifted like shit. I ran about 10 quarts through it and it did fix it. That synthetic fluid is nasty looking, even at 60k. It comes out just as nasty on GM vehicles too
Hello again, I service mine Kuga's 6F35 and PTU every 10k miles. However finding the LV fluid here in the UK for sensible money is difficult, Ford UK charge around $55 per quart !!!!!
For this 2nd Generation 6F35 transmission 2013-2019 (?) there is no dipstick, like the 1st Generation has. If you don't have the pump to fill it, use a trans funnel to fill from the top for the 2013-2015 (?) 6F35- look for the plastic cap (labeled ATF/automatic transmission fluid-if not covered in grime like mine) on top of the trans, to the left of the air filter box. Just did my '14 Escape (bought it used) at 108K miles and yeah, it was black...but didn't smell burnt (at least). I'll do it 2 more times and then every 30K miles. BUT the pump is your friend to fill the PTU/power transfer unit if you have the AWD (4WD) model. The PTU needs done every 30K miles too as it's close to the exhaust, etc. and don't forget the rear differential, both have limited access to the drain/fill hole(s)-you've been warned. 🙂
Just dang. I wish I had seen this 50k miles ago and didn't go by the Service book. I asked my local Ford dealer at the last oil change when it was time for a Trans fluid change. They said 150k. 94k now and only issue has been the purge valve. My 2012 Focus went to 198k before I traded it for a 2018 Focus. Traded my wife's 2015 Fusion for a 2018 on the same Day. So we have 2 2018 Fords. 1.5L Ecoboost on hers and 2.0L NA in mine.

I recently bought a 2016 Ford Escape with the 6F35 @ 77k miles. It shifted hard at speed when it downshifted to accelerate. I followed the procedure by FordTechMakuloco. After draining I added 4 quarts and took it out for a spin to warm up the transmission(which definitely shifted smoother especially the downshift. Removed the tire/wheel and leveled the car then removed the side plug expecting a little fluid to drain out but didn't get any. I added an additional half a quart but didn't still didn't get any real drainage. I stopped at that point. The car is shifting smoothly. Old fluid was nasty. May do another flush at next oil change. Which I do every 5k.

I did the level check the first time I changed mine, from then on I just use a marked paint mixing bucket to measure what comes out. 4.5 qts seems to put it right on the money and I fill from the top with a long skinny funnel through the vent cap. Have to pour it really slow or else it burps back up and makes a mess. The LV is some bizarre stuff but changing the fluid is super easy to do. I change mine often. Ive noticed for the longest time it was hard to find 5 qt jugs of LV, only could find in single qt bottles but now its readily available.

I am getting ready to change careers so I'll not have my company provided vehicle after that (which ironically is also an Escape) so I'll start driving ours more.

VW really got the wet clutch DSG right as far as modern transmissions go. Very strong and sporty. Easy filter and fluid changes almost like an oil change, and the fluid cools the clutches to make them last a very long time. Still have to change fluid at 40k but I’ve seen many over 400k with nothing but scheduled fluid and filter, even 650k miles with no issues. Sometimes the Mechatronic unit goes out or the Dual Mass flywheel but it’s not a huge issue like most transmission problems are.
I had the duel mass flywheel chatter on my 2013 Jetta TDI at around 60k lol
I use a modified garden sprayer . ( chemical resistant ) 4 liter . As a fluid pump . $ 14.00 at Lowe's , Home depot.
Has lasted for 10 years .
The recommended service is a triple drain and fill. Capacity is 4 liters. 4.27 quarts. I use the vent hole. A good funnel with vinyl tube. I put PTFE tape on the drain plug thread.

I've done alot of oil analysis on my super duties, trans and engine, I've learned two things, the trans interval on a 6r140 is really only about 50k on factory fluid. Valvoline multi atf red label max life in the maroon bottle is the best fluid to use as it is the only dex 6 enhanced and mercon lv compatible fluid you can get thats not oem, on the half tons and super duty trucks in our fleet, trans is 50k interval and 30k interval respectively. I don't trust Ford fluids, I think they are not as good as some people say. I've done early fluid changes and even at a longer interval, it still looks good.

The gentleman is correct changing the oil a little bit at a time right now is going to be your best bet because if you change too much at one time it may mess up the transmission worse, unfortunately it may already be messed up and you're just on borrowed time

You must do 2 to 3 drain and fills if you do it every 30,009 miles. I just do it every 10,000 miles, it takes 10 minutes. I fill through the vent hole and add 4-1/8 quarts.

@@Trekopolisjust saw your comment. Yes, I fill it through the vent cap opening in the engine bay, I buy the gallon jug so it’s easy to pour in with a funnel. I’ve done the leveling procedure with the side bolt off while it’s running once. I change it so often I just drain it and fill it with 4-1/8 quarts. I know that’s not the most accurate method but my trans is original and I’ve done 12 drain and fills since I bought it with 94,000 miles and I have 165,000 miles now.

Have you ever considered adding a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) to it? I've used it in practically everything I've ever owned. But, some people say never to use it and I never see any supporting evidence why you shouldn't.

Thanks for the video. I recently picked up a 2014 Escape Titanium @ 84,200 miles. Visually, the engine compartment and overall package was very clean. I had to do a few costly repair to pass Maryland's notoriously hard inspection process(which I feel is a racket, but I digress...). It passed in Virginia, btw. Had to replace the combined muffler/catalytic converter assembly which was an all one piece item. The local independent shop I usually use did a transmission fluid change. The fluid looked exactly as you have shown here. His tech said it may be going up, but I feel that it may be a normal look on these transmissions after seeing your vid and others like it. Added Lucas transmission conditioner after change and no problems shifting. consistent more pronounced shit into second, but not really out of character with other cars I've owned. will possibly change fluid again after 10,000 miles. I feel the trick with this Escape is to religiously maintain it. Any suggestions otherwise? Thank you.

It has a vent they can be used as a fill Port but it's not a fill port and it's got a rubber cap on top of it
They did my Trans fluid on my 16 MKZ. Only got like 6.5 quarts out I guess. It's also a 13 hour Job to replace a $70 filter apparently so told them not to worry about it.
6F35, 6F50 and 6F55 (also the new 8 speeds) are all internal filters. Must remove transmission and split case to change filter which is why it's important to make sure you maintain your fluid to avoid plugging up your filter. If you still have warranty by all means but if you're out of warranty and don't want your transmission blowing up, change that fluid yourself. Simple drain and fill, you could also fill it slowly from up top, the vent hole. It's a vent so you have to make sure you don't go faster than air escaping or you'll make a mess.
If you keep changing the oil the filter is not an issue. Most transmissions have "screen" not a filter. If the transmission is wearing as it should the wear particles are so fine they flow through the screen - so it really shouldn't be catching anything. If your transmission has an issue and the clutches throw a few "chunks" that get caught in the screen it still shouldn't be an issue - plenty of screen area for the fluid to flow through and the chunks don't get circulated to clog a passage. If the transmission clutches throw enough "chunks" to clog the screen your transmission was toast anyway. Changing the screen wasn't going to fix the clutches that are failing.
I have had 4 Saturn vues and 5 equinoxes. Done a bunch of fluid exchanges. Toyo trans are solid. But have dirty fluid.

A question, how can you put let's say 4 qts in that side hole cold, and expected it to not be spilling out a bunch once it's warm and expanded? The last time I change the transmission fluid in my 2017 Ford escape SE, the green little cap on the vent plug with the constant tension spring flew off somewhere in my engine bay. I finally found it about two hours later. When I change my transmission fluid this weekend, I’m going to do it the way you do by filling it through the check plug hole.

Haynes manual mis identifies the level plug. I had drained out 4.5 qts and refilled 7 qts up top and i said to myself something not right. Finally went to TH-cam and found this video and others . 2 qts thencame back out of the 10mm drain plug.

The wife just bought a 2020 ecosport 2.0L 4wd . It looks like the same transmission . So LV fluid also ? I change the oils on our cars . Saves a ton of money .
Ford boss I have 2014 fusion and every 30000 and never gets that black I'm gonna keep changing mine the way I been never had any problems my is a 6f35 only problem I get sometimes is down shifting on hill it down shifting into a to low of a gear then the speed car is going but besides that shifting is great 👍

I change my tranny fluid every 3rd oil change. If you stick to that rule your tranny will last waaaaaay longer. I'm not talking 10k oci's either. Your living in delusion if you think those kind of oci's are good.
Gee, how I wish you were local. My 2015 Ford escape is having some issues. And yes I was told on this car when I got it that all fluids where changed I asked about the tranny fluid and the salesperson said it wouldn't need changed til 150,000 miles, now I have just.a little over 100,000 miles and boom issues. I'm so upset and irritated. I would of serviced this a long time ago if I knew, think they just wanted it off there lot.
First I wanna say thanks for the advice on a previous video I commented about a power steering issue with a 17 F150. It was water intrusion in the connectors. His power steering works now.
I also wanna add in relation to this video that my wife and I have a 17 honda fit with the CVT and I change the fluid every 30k miles. Since its a CVT. I dont want to risk it with that unit and I know what they cost. I will tell anyone with a CVT to have their fluid changed every 30k miles. Some people say they can go 70 80 or 100k and I'm like no not even in a standard automatic...

I just dropped/ filled my Trans fluid in my 17 Fusion with Amzoil ATF and I got a 3mpg boost in economy.
I done this and PTU. The rear diff has different views on refilling it. One is measure what you suck out. Two is fill to what looks like a level plug and three fill to 4 mm below level plug. I like to know what Ford’s would do. Let’s for example the half axle drive shaft oil seal leaks. The oil seal is replaced so what level would I fill up to?
What’s your opinion on the 5R55 series of transmissions? They have a bad reputation, but Ford put them in a lot of vehicles. Is it just a matter of proper maintenance?
Maintenance yes and they do have BAND issues...sometimes they snap and or crack on the verge of snapping and give an intermittent solenoid code
My 2005 Escape and 2010 fusion get serviced yearly. The fluid is always red. The escape has 210,000 the fusion 257,000 miles.
Nice work. I have '16 explorer 2.3l ecoboost with 6f35 transmission that I just got. Shifts fine but when i step on it little harder and it downshifts from 6th to 5th gear, i can feel a thud(not sure how to explain it) I feel like it might be due to not enough fluid in transmission. It has 67k miles but i dont know when was teansmission serviced last since I just got the car. Also at higher speed and lowee torque, I can see the change in rpms up and down +/- 200rpms Any suggestions? Car is still under full 60 day warranty but I am not too confident that the this auto dilership(Autonation chrysler) knows what they are doing since the are not Ford specific. @@FordBossMe My friend took his 2018 Titanium Escape AWD 2.0 turbo to the Ford Dealership today. His engine light came on. The code said that there was water detected inside the engine. The dealership said they will have to go for a 5 hour test to find where the water leak is. He wanted to know if the engine oil and the water are mixed together or the water burned threw the cylinders and if the engine is done for. He has the best warranty he can buy through Ford. What does he do if that water has mixed with oil. Where does he go with Ford now. A new engine or fixed under his warranty? He has 35,500 miles on his Escape. No other issues so far. When i filled mine i took out the plastic plug in the vent and my long transmission funnel fits perfectly right in the rubber hose and holds it. Super easy to dump a few bottles of fluid in.
Yup i got the long green funnel can change the fluid in my fusion in about ten mins dont jack it up nothing easy job but 50$ a change im on 2nd drain in a week gunna do a 3rd to be sure just bought the car

Question: fill until overflows drain while engine running or off?
I ask because I had engine running with fluid just at overfill line, then turned off engine (had not plugged yet) and fluid started coming out overflow.. so rushed to put cap back in.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the newer Ford/Lincoln transmissions essentially have a thermostat inside of the transmission so it cooks the fluid until it gets up to temp and is at the proper viscosity so that it provides a better and smoother shift

Momma's 1995 red ranger with 3.0l 25 years old with 237k ive serviced the trans every 35k with filter i sucked out 3 qts with a power sucker once a year and replace just as a safety PM. After the orginal service. Using walmarts supertech warren oil co. Mercon trans fluid 4 qt jug for 14 bucks. Like you said fluid is cheap. The trans is original. I worder if ill get 300k out of the trans?

Dex 6 will do that at 15 k totally fine change it at 60 k the transmission will last 200k

I'm not sure of not but take lose the return line off the cooler and use the transmission pump to "flush" the old fluid out. Takes about 3 gallons to complete.
They don't have services for the customer to allow that done

Hi Richard. A bit off topic, but I’ll ask anyways. Daughter’s 2011 Ford Escape 3.0. Leaking timing cover. I’d like to try this myself due to the high cost both of us can not afford. How difficult would this be for the DIY’er? Do you suggest replacing the lower intake gaskets at the same time? If so, can I lift the lower intake with the fuel rail still attached to change out the gaskets? Thanks in advance - Any other tips would be appreciated!
Well I do have a video on a edge that will give you an idea on how difficult it is it's not an easy job so if you look in my library and look at I think it's like a 2010 or 2011 edge water pump job you'll get an idea on what it will take even though it's not the same motor same principle though

I did a drain an fill on my mazda skyactiv transmission at 60k and it was almost black Did it again 20k later and only then did the fluid look new. Funny thing is Mazda says the transmission fluid is "lifetime" 🙄 I wouldn't dare test that theory

That's not good, I noticed these trans's are hard on fluid, usually around 30K the fluid starts to change color. I always changed the fluid in my flex every 30-40K and the fluid looks brand new and still shifts like it did I I bought it off the lot. It's at 265,000.

I've done my transit 3 times at 60k this long fluid exchanges are bunk. Mine was starting to act funny here and there. The fluid exchanges has made it run like new. Wished I'd have started at 30k. I will continue to do it every other oil change until it looks normal. The first fluid I got out was terrible. No way would it have lasted over 100K
Can you use a BG machine on fords? I’m a GM tech but I know some manufacturers recommend against a flush machine.
We have a trans machine that we use it's not BG
And when we do the flushes we don't do them through the lines
We do what's called a running service where we take everything out of the pan I replace it with new and then while the vehicle is running mixing in we replace quart for Quart
The new fluid gets mixed in and then as its mixing through were pulling out a partial of the old while mixing in new so as we're mixing in we're pulling out... we're mixing and we're pulling out over and over again eventually it gets really really clear
And fresh like new new

this looks the same as my ford transit connect which i think is the same as a fusion I filled it from the top, was annoying to have to take the lift up and down. seems like its was reccomended to do it while it was running and to go through reverse, neutral, forward, iirc the tranny dumps quite a bit o fluid back into the resevoir when car is off.

The transmissons on the gen 3 Fords 6R80s seem to have alot of issues with the molded lead frame on the valve body to solenoids causing issues.

I am not sure how accurate this is but I believe somewhere I read that longer service intervals look cleaner to the EPA and have less impact.

Nothing to do with the EPA. Its marketing. Keep the cost of ownership to a minimum and use that to advertise how cheap it is to own a certain vehicle. They usually only advertise the first 100K of ownership. Neglecting maintenance in the first 100K takes thousands if not 100s of thousands of miles off the major powertrain components (engine, transmission, drive axles). The manufacturer only wants to get the car out of warranty as cheaply as they can. If the car drops dead at 100,000 miles they want to sell you a new one.

I have a 2010 Ford Fusion 2.5l with the 6F35 transmission. Today I did a drain and fill with the Valvoline Maxlife trans fluid. I did one drain and fill, and I will do one more. My question is does this trans take a filter? You can find filters to buy but I just watched a tear down video of this trans and I didn't see a filter.

My GFS escape has 35k miles and when it gets to 20-25mph it feels like a constant jerk hesitation and once you go over 35-40mph it goes smooth . Is that converter shudder? Read on some forums changing the fluid got rid of it. She's a yr past her 5 yr warranty
Mom has an 11 Malibu with the 6T40E which is basically a 6F35 and after about 36k miles the fluid is dark. I take it to the dealer and let them do a BG trans flush
I did my 2011 Fusion awhile back, I was expecting it to be black like this fluid but to my surprise it was red.
I feel like they are running the transmission fluid to hot to turn it black like that. Toyota in the RAV4 with a cooler does the same thing at 40,000 miles. I don't know what they are doing but those transmissions do fail earlier than normal

Can I do multiple drain and fills at one time to change out more of the fluid?
What I did to get the fluid nice and clean in my 2011 Escape is to change it out once, drive it a thousand miles, and then change it again. So that way, the new fluid can work out all of the dirt and grime from the cracks and crevasses of the transmission. On my second change, the fluid came out really dark (almost black). Once I put the new fluid in, it's never changed color, and I'm already 2,000 miles in. If you change the fluid 2-3 times immediately, you will never get it clean. It takes time and patience with these transmissions. I must add that the older design 6F35 is MUCH easier to work on compared to the newer ones.
But how did u check if it's full, I have a 2012 ford escape and it's damn hard to read the dipstick. The fluid splashes different each time I take it out. Can you tell me how to check it properly? Thanks. I believe a drain and fill is 4.5 quarts right? Did u use motorcraft mercon LV or other?
@@justlg3359 What I do (I don't recommend this if your emergency brake doesn't work), let your engine warm up for 3 minutes. Put your E-brake on, and put your car into drive. Hop out and check it twice. You will have an accurate hot reading. Also, I used Valvoline ATF full synthetic fluid, which has been tested to work in Mercon IV transmissions. It can take anywhere from 5 1/2, to 6 quarts. Depending on how long you let the old fluid drain out.

Ford escape 2015 se, we just drained the transmission fluid, have done it twice. Was we suppose to do the drain plug and drain the also? I'm having so many issues and I need help
The drain plug is the only place that you're supposed to drain it from I don't know what you're really asking me because the way you're asking your question is kind of jumble up and it's confusing
You pulled a little drain plug on the bottom you let it all drain out and you put the plug back in and then you pull the plug up by the CV axle that I show in the video and you keep filling it up until it starts spilling out then you let it stop spilling out put the plug back in run the vehicle for let's just take 15-20 minutes let it warm up and then recheck the fluid and it needs to be level with the fill eyelid that's it there's no other way to do it
What is your opinion on the f150 6r80 trans? Are they very reliable and dependable as long as you change the fluid?

My 2017 F150 is about to hit 40k miles. Do you reccomend a drain and fill or fluid flush? I always hear people say to avoid flushes because it can damage the transmission but I'm not sure if that's an old wives tale with modern day cars. What are your thoughts?
Basic trans service....no full flush
Depends on the "flush". If its a fluid exchanger that uses the transmission pump - its not going to cause an issue and you are getting close to 100% of the fluid out. Its also more expensive. If you are going to keep up on your transmission services dropping the plug and replacing the fluid in the pan will keep the fluid "fresh". You are doing that by starting at 40K. If you are towing and hauling doing it at 30K would be better - or even more often if you are know you are abusing the transmission with over burdening it. The transmission temperature gauge that your F150 has (most have - all?) will tell you real quick if you are over working the transmission.
Fluid is cheap transmissions are expen$ive.

@Ford Boss Me Thank you. I think the Ford mechanics here in Atlanta try to fill through the breather, but your video makes more sense. They replaced the 2.0 motor under warranty 2 years ago, and it hasn't been right since. It's a 2019 w 27k miles. I'm original owner, no towing or hot rodding. Just gentle daily driver. Now noticed a small whine sound starting. Now it's off warranty. Just didn't want to get taken advantage of.
Follow up: My 2019 escape is still making a hard to hear whine when accelerated. Took to dealer a couple months ago and they said it was fine..Only 28k miles. Had engine replaced under warranty 2 years ago. Also had an front drive axel/cv boot replaced a year ago. Don't see any visible leaks. Dealer in Atlanta wants car for 3 days to diagnose now If they think it is in the trans, it will take 8 weeks to get evaluated. Then however long to replace or fix trans. Would it be advised to just start w a trans fluid replacement w my private mech and see what happens? That won't hurt it will it? Just figured we could look at the fluid that comes out and make an assessment. If its jet black or has something in it, then i can plan on it being gone for a while. Any suggestions appreciated.

That transmission takes about 9L of oil. When you pull the plug only about 4L of oil comes out. The torque converter holds half the oil. I've owned many vehicles and never had to change the transmission oil until recently. The 6F35 transmission has a huge filter and donut magnet to clean metal out of the fluid. The Transmission Control Module is not mounted on or in the transmission. Ford provides almost zero information to the home mechanic. FORD loves Ducking its customers.
