I'm 67, grew up outdoors, ex-military, ER nurse for 30years and this is about the best video/presentation on portable manageable survival gear kit I've seen. I've seen a lot on my job, taken many classes and read many books and I would use THIS as a core instruction. True, you should fear hypothermia and dehydration for they are silent killers. I carry sunglasses for eye protection/bright light, lip balm for lip protection/fire starter/candle...... cut a q-tip in half and jam in lip balm.....if you want. You may want to throw in a 4-way key to turn on building water outlets. Anyway superb job!
I can see why he won Alone. Two months in the autumn wilderness near Port Hardy is no small feat. For those who haven't been there, you can't imagine how wet and windy and cold it can be. Also, more black bear around there than I have ever seen in my life. He has the right equipment, but more importantly he has the right knowledge and the right demeanor.
The problem with storing a BOB in the car is that it is not climate controlled. 120 degrees in the summer and possibly sub zero in the winter. Meanwhile your kit is subjected to all these extremes 24/7. Most of the gear can probably take it, but some things will deteriorate quickly in those extreme temperature conditions.
True, bear that in mind while choosing contents. BTW, in 1971 while I was in Eritrea, East Africa, in the US Military, I ate Combat Rations (C rations) that were dated 1945 and they were mostly still good. The peanut better had separated into oil and solids. The chocolate looked dusty for the same reason.
The only problem with poly is for electricians or those who work around electricity, if they are exposed to high current (high voltage) it melts to the body... Might be a issue for fireman also. Cotton is the OSHA requirement and it doesn't melt at high voltage it might burn and char but not all over like a vasoline saturated cottonball peeling the skin off with it.

It's a bag. Put things in it that you might need in NYC in case of an emergency, for example, terrorist attack, fire while you're on the 23rd floor, NBC attack or whatever you can realistically imagine.

Something very reassuring and calming in his style of communication too .... seems to exude a deep wisdom and obviously draws from a deep well of knowledge and a broad skill set...( 'Tried/Tested/Passed with honours.) Distinct lack of bravado also. If I'm ever in a bad situation I would probably ask myself " what would Alan Kay do right now?". Appreciate you passing this on to us Mr Kay. Hope you write and publish a book someday .... Would be worth reading for the philosophy alone.
When the SHTF, there won't be any AA or AAA batteries to be found. Rechargables and a small solar charger is important. A single 18650 can be recharged over 300 times, holds 4 times the energy of a AA, and is the equivalent of over 1000 AA batteries over it's lifetime.
Exactly my thoughts, heard alot of people say use flashlights that take popular size batteries like aa and aaa, problem is all the popular sizes will be all gone and the uncommon sizes like cr123 or cr2 will be left over. Thats why i have a duel fuel light that can use cr123, aa, and aaa.

Awesome presentation! Wouldn't it make more sense to use a 32 ounce ss bottle, simply because water purification tablets are typically designed to treat a liter if water, and lots of kits include purification in this form?

oldgeekster1 I've had 3 sawyer bladders, and they all ruptured near the spout. Rolling them up and rubber binding them for compact storage was too tough on them. The Platypus bladders are a bit more durable, and are compatible w/ the sawyer filters; a worthwhile upgrade, in my opinion. Also, don't throw away the filter the first time it gets gunned up! $20 is too much for what could be a single use, depending on water quality. There's a lot of tutorials on how to back-flush it using your clean water bladder w/ some 50¢ (or less) lid modifications. Might as well make the most of the advertised 100k gallon yield. Beyond that, my only gripe was the Bernie jab. ;) Love the videos; I've learned a lot. Keep up the good work!
Excellent video, however belatedly I found it. Is there any way to get more details on your back-up knife and sheath? You gave all the reasons for having one, but didn't get into detail on what it was (although it looks like a Mora) and what design features went into the sheath itself. Thanks!

I tried to get a Recon III, tarp, wobble and poncho in the main compartment of a Maxpedition Monsoon Gearslinger. I could barely fit the recon III, then stuff the wobble inside on top. If anyone besides Alan has been able to do this, please tell me the trick.
You can get it from Old Grouch Surplus, or shop around and you can get any size silnylon tarp you want and for less money......or more money for that matter.
I respectfully disagree. Find the container first. Then think in terms of multiple use items. How will this item serve more than just one use for me? Then select your items and let the container be the final determiner of your contents. This forces you to think carefully about what goes inside. Do I REALLY need it? Is it necessary to the intended purpose of the container? Otherwise, it is too easy to select a container larger than you really need. Remember, this container will be on the move with you. It is not intended to be an INCH bag or provide long term survival out of doors. It is a Get Home or 72 hour bag only.
All set, just liked the size and design of your bag. I have a 40L emergency bag in my car, that includes a small tent and stove etc. I have a 55L (my backpacking pack) for bug-out (daughter has her own), which is more geared towards longer distance and more days, if needed weeks. I checked on the maps, but it's very hard to filter and select them, so a friend went to AAA and picked up a stack of maps that cover about 6 states and one for the entire country. We (group of women) are also going to a bushcraft school and have planned a navigation class as a way to be "prepared" and self-reliant.
Cotton kills? I have no idea how the frontiersmen survived long enough to procreate. They violated every "rule" we're taught today. I sometimes wonder if the people who preach these rules have even been out of the house, let alone spent any real time in the wilderness. Cotton blue jeans were considered a Godsend by pioneers who wore them day in and day out, in the desert, in the mountains, in summer, in winter, through hell and high water. They preferred them over wool, and every other choice of clothing they had. I've worn blue jeans in every conceivable weather condition, every time of the year, wet, dry, and you name it. Cotton does not kill. Stupid rules by ignorant people kills.

A 40 oz bottle is 1.18 liters a 32 oz bottle is 0.946 liters. So you would just let some water out of the 40 oz to get the liter.

Actually, given the chance, the 49'ers would shift into wool in winter. Cotton pants did make Levi Strauss rich though.

Cotton loses 90% of its insulation properties when wet.
Their underwear was wool, not cotton. That is what was against their skin. Cotton most certainly kills.
