They were all possessed by various ghosts. The guys by the men of the family while Yuka was possessed by a mermaid to try and instigate the gang to solve the mystery.
hey guys protip: if youre ever being stabbed do not remove the knife, you will bleed out (also i guess if youre ever stabbing someone, do remove the knife. theyll bleed out)
The Old Man returns in almost all the bad endings as I explained to clean up. Since Seitaro had died the spirits didn't even open the door or the old man locked it ahead of time. The key to this is the final zoom in on Yuka and the ending text, which implied he was going to put her in one of the tubes as a mermaid.
So in conclusion: This old guy & his family has been abduct women and turn them into swollen mermaid because they adore them. The old men tricked these four to stay at his mansion in order to kill the 2 guys and turn the 2 girls into mermaid. The old men lied saying he did that just to release the soul bcoz he can't do it himself after being exposed. (He tried to kill Rin by locking her in another ending remember?). Since he won't be able to kill them, so he let them go by giving a map. This old man know that he can't be sue as the corpse has been destroyed, nobody is dead..by letting go of them, he can stay in his mansion, find new pray, continue his doing...creepy wasn't it? This is my theory though...but it make sense...
Probably with the True End, the man knew his secret was out. But with all the evidence gone and he himself doesn't know how to remake the process (also, where would he find victims on a lonely mountain), he had no choice but to waste away in the old mansion. And in a fight between 4 teens/young adults against one elderly man, the teens have both bodily youth and numbers and probably better mental clarity too
I don't know about you,but it's kinda obvious that Rin and Seitaro are"more than friends".If you pay attention, you will see that Rin or Seitaro does more things for eachother than Yuuta or Yuka. For example,Rin jumped in the swamp for Seitaro, and Seitaro also jumped for Rin when she found that hairpin. But when Rin jumped after Seitaro in one of the endings,Yuuta didn't jumped for her.And it's kinda implied that he likes Yuka.
getting le good ending: * Not lighting up le fireplace in Yuka's bedroom * Refusing to Seitaro when he said something about staying by her side * Not doging Seitaro's attack when he was holding the axe
I got the Yao Bikuni ending haha but it might actually be my favorite one. Cannibalism and insanity, dark endings can be nice sometimes. But the underwater dream ending was nice too, I thought the one scene was really sweet when Rin cries the tears of the girls who just wanted to be free. Quite touching.
I think she'd probably be *somewhat* okay, honestly. I mean, not really okay, but realistically a person in that situation would just be suffering from what's sometimes called "brief reactive psychosis". She would probably be sent to a mental institution for awhile, but eventually would just pretend (or maybe even start to believe; probably the best case scenario in a situation this extreme) that it hadn't actually happened.
Rin was already cracking under the deaths of her friends and everything happening, so she wasn't thinking clearly enough to use the pickaxe on the door and even if she did realise the pickaxe was on the door, she would have been to hungry to even drag herself through the tunnel and climb a ladder so.... food comes first... and then she completely lost it :3
You know... in the ending where they drown and die... drowning is actually pretty awful. Once I almost drowned when I was little, and it's terrifying. You feel helpless, as oxygen leaves your body, like if you were about to explode.
There's some other things I didn't explain like the Kappa thing. The tales about Ningyo like Yao Bikuni were designed to caution people that immortality sucks after a few hundred years. Kappa are youkai used to explain drowning and scare kids away from water, this is why Seitaro thought the story was weird. Mermaids don't scare people, Kappa do so why not use a Kappa which traditionally has been the go to for that situation.
Wasn't Yuka just given doses of the germicide? Gases filling your body is a sign of decomposition, but since decomposition doesn't happen with the supposed substance Old Man uses, perhaps the side effects of the medicine is extreme swelling. Feeling cold must be because the swelling pressures blood vessels making heat transfer weaker, and the death by heat is probably gases expanding until the membrane ruptures, if the reason for swelling was gas - otherwise, Old Man also gave her alkali metals.
It's more of a tale about how depressing and lonely immortality or long living is. Every friend or family member you knew is dead and the days that used to be more unique start to blur as the days add up.
I explained a bit about some of the mermaid stuff but Yao Bikuni itself is the name of a mermaid flesh eating story. The name translates to 800 years Buddhist Priestess.
If anyone is interested in learning more there is actually a whole lupine the 3rd series on the whole mermaid eating to live forever thing. Although that too goes horribly wrong in an almost RE T-virus style. Also author Rumiko Takahashi wrote a series of manga based on some of the legends used in this game. I can only remember ningyo no Mori (forest of the mermaid) and ningyo no nameda (tears of the mermaid). If you like this series I highly suggest you read those.
Has anyone noticed that when one of the friends is possessed by the curse, their eyes are not visible and replaced by a shadow that covers the top half of their face...?
There's no statute of limitations on murder... but you did just destroy the crime scene which had all the evidence, so there wouldn't be much the police could do.
I really wanted to see his "painting" like Rin got one even when she was crying we knew how she looked. Well we just know that Seitaro has a very beautyful hand...
Yeah, that's what I got the first time I played. Back then I didn't know there were different endings, so I was sort of "wtf??" But yeah... I'm pretty sure he was possessed.
In the "Underwater Dream" sequence she wears Seitaro's jacket, but isn't wearing his jacket at all. Is it essential to look at the Dynamite, when following Seitaro for the Good Ending or can you neglect it and it doesn't have any trigger meaning for the Good Ending? Or does Rin automatically look at them, when passing by? As much as I hated Rin, I totally shipped her and Seitaro. I love the names he gave her, "Yammerzaki", "Yamayucky" or "Yamamonkey". Ah, so much love! x3
Seitaro walking so far, bleeding so profusely to die in swamp was sad & unexpectedly hard to watch. Ningyo legend is tragic - to live alone for 800 years is worst living death I could imagine. Note on Ophelia: probably fell into river by accident but had not the will to live because of her sorrow (her love Hamlet killed her beloved father), so did not try to save herself; suicide theory still debated. Best was music by Ravel so beautiful and haunting. Yes, continue your analyses of games!
He didn't forget because he had to stop Rin. He forgot because Rin interrupted him by becoming unstable and trying to smash the tanks the mermaids were kept in. He was just beginning to piece together what had happened and says something like "I see..>" But before he can tell Rin what he's realized, she tries to smash the tanks. In his fervor to stop her, he completely forgets to tell her the truth of the mermaids.
having seen the remake first, I was honestly convinced that whole time that Yuuta was legitimately batshit and that the reasoning behind his freakout was equally insane. Interesting to see that his motivations fell more along the lines of failure to protect Yuka than,,,, well,,,, wasted opportunity, let's just say.
I rewatched this series for merMay and I forgot that this is actually my favorite Uri game, but still think it's messed up that even in the "good ending" the old man doesn't get punished for being part of the problem.
12:35 Legends say there was a person who ate mermaid and it made them immortal and then years later they died but people don't know if they did. Truly an epic tale passed down from generation to generation, sung by the bards.
There's one thing I never understood especially when we find out the truth about the mermaid swamp legend: what caused Yuuto and Seitaro to become possessed?
It was the spirits of the females >> She probably possessed Yuka as she tried to get through to the protagonist and when the spirit left Yuka became well again.
That also explains the sexist behaviour "women dont talk back to me!" (Cant talk when they dead ofc) and the Yuuta fappin to Yuka.. so gross, but the men of Tsuchida found the bloated "mermaids" really attractive so they would find Yuka attractive in her state too.
I liked The Crooked Man more because the characters were more likable imo, thus making the story to flow better. But I won't say I didn't like this one, I think it's good to have a full-tomboy heroine for a change instead of a delicate flower.
The only ending I could reach was when you light up the fire (Yuka and Yuuta die) then later you accept to stay with Seitaro and he kills Rin in the bathtub :c
I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate your videos, let alone these All Endings and Explaination ones. It means a lot to me and I like hearing your insightful and information ridden commentary. It is beyond wonderful! Keep it up!
Also, in the flashbacks with the mother and 2 children was the woman's problem not being able to do anything about it. The 2 children although you never know their genders, are a boy and girl. We know this because of the 2 mirrored rooms with the 2 journals, 1 hating the fish and the other loving the fish. Perhaps that could be symbolism for the 1 loving the fish to be a boy, who will eventually grow up to love the "mermaids" and the other being a girl who will learn about all of it detesting it
If it's a heavy door this will be a lot harder than you imagine. If the hinges are on her side though she could break those, or even pull the pins depending if they're secured. Either way I think she probably broke down emotionally by then.
Because to end the curse they had to blow up the cavern. If Seitaro doesn't explain the truth then Rin never gets the motivation to blow it up. The cast is not that smart so he probably was that dumb.
From the beginning but to make it a bit easier: Death scenes: 00:00:10 Ending 1, Yaobikuni: 00:09:01 Ending 2, Forever Deep: 00:13:45 Ending 3, Secrets: 00:17:52 Ending 4, Underwater Dream: 00:23:20 Plot, Ending Explanation: 00:41:09
The old guy did it. His only use for them was to release the 'mermaids', and without the smarter male protagonist living and breathing, that became impossible, so he finished Yuuta off and added Yuka to his collection. He did the same thing to Rin by locking her in that room, expecting her to die with time. I felt a little empathy for him, seeing only the good ending, but now knowing the alternate endings, the old man should've died a slow, painful, agonizing death.
Thank you for taking the time to explain your theories and expand upon the story of games, I really love that about your Let's Plays. There are so many Let's Players out there, but that's one of the things that makes you stand out from the crowd IMO :)
she went insane because she had spent possibly weeks surviving by eating the flesh of a monstrosity, locked in a pitch black room that would affect anyone
Wait...how did Seitaro managed to go to the entrance ladder without the lantern?Didn't Seitaro said to Rin that "You hold the lantern.Follow me."?How did he managed to go there..?
Thank you for all the work you put into your videos, a lot of people would of gotten one ending and been fie with it but you go the extra mile. Thanks!
My thoughts on the old man saying he doesn't have much meat might be a nod to the fact that he knows about the mermaid legends, specifically on the eating their flesh part. Due to his family's secret and knowing those legends, he probably despises eating meat as i reminds him of it. The first bad ending isn't really all that sinister on the old man. His plan failed so he let's Rin go, and being mentally broken, she can't do anything.
The explaining things at the end feature is a really good idea, I wish other Let's players would think to do this, it would clear up a lot of confusion, like your explanation did for me with this game. Subbed! :D
I doubt he knew until the moment they saw the corpses, after all the evidence was gathered-on his end and on Rin's end. Without the ability to put both sides of the puzzle together, you end up with a very incomplete picture. For all his deductive reasoning, even he couldn't figure out the emotional aspect to it like Rin did.
I think that old man shot Yuuta, as it says at the end; Beauty shall remain so... Secrets will forever sleep in secrecy. Yet the only person knew and possibly made the legend is the old man, and he liked "mermaids".
Extremely increased lifespan or immortality. Japanese mermaids didn't get human features or beauty till Western influence so going by the old depictions it'd seem more like eating a half chimp tuna rather than weird semi human cannibalism.
I think Rin just went crazy, I thought at first she really was going to live forever. yea but then i found out the truth about the mermaids. I guess she just cannibalized and ran off into the woods
I have only one BIG problem with the "Forever Deep" ending: Drowning is absolutely horrible. The body breathes on reflex, meaning you are litterally breathing in water, filling your lungs with it. Drowning victims NEVER die without pain. =(
I got the underwater dream the first time I played, and I didn't want to play the game again to see the other endings. I had a feeling it would ruin the story for me. I actually cried my eyes out when it was over, lol. But I was too tempted, and clicked your video. The other endings upset me, but that's obviously not your fault, lol. Thanks for the video. xo
I was wondering..~ How do you get the different endings, the one where Rin interrupts and then the one where she doesn't. Is there something you did wrong?
Don't know where you're referring to in particular but.. 3:26 - Whatever's possesed Yuuta makes him kill himself since he failed to turn Yuka into one of those mermaids since she died. 22:23 - The Old Man kills Yuuta because he now knows that they can't undo the curse since Seitaro and Rin are dead. So he just gets rid of them at that point.
Weird... When I played the game, I got no pictures. Like the shot of Rin crying and the "mermaid" in the tank... The only picture I seemed to get was when Yuka was swelled up... Plus, I didn't get a warning when I first started the game up. Like how in Paranoiac and TCM, in the beginning, there was a message that said "this game has frightening elements and pictures, viewer discretion advised" or something along those lines.
1st off, I'm SO GLAD Cory forgot to light the fireplace. 2nd, I'm SO GLAD he accidentally pressed Don't Doge. CoryxKenshin could have actually gotten the "Secret" ending, if he'd pressed Doge. He got the best ending. Or, at least the good ending. I liked the ending where Rin ate the "Mermaid". But my favorite ending is the "Secret" ending, where Yuuta gets shot, it's the most interesting to me.
They were all possessed by various ghosts. The guys by the men of the family while Yuka was possessed by a mermaid to try and instigate the gang to solve the mystery.
Only you can prevent friends from exploding.
What friends
Then I will let them explode
U can't
Friends don't let friends blow up.

bruh Yuuta fapped in his bedroom while fantasizing about Yuka
@@firagabird yeah, but he was possessed by mermaid fuckers
Or that they care about their friends.
getting le good ending:

But the underwater dream ending was nice too, I thought the one scene was really sweet when Rin cries the tears of the girls who just wanted to be free. Quite touching.
The Yaobikuni ending wasn't technically cannibalism since Rin isn't a mermaid lol.
Jen CP the so called " mermaids " are girls. so , it technically is caniballism
Jen CP
You know that those ‘mermaid’ are actually normal girls... right?
I think she'd probably be *somewhat* okay, honestly.
I mean, not really okay, but realistically a person in that situation would just be suffering from what's sometimes called "brief reactive psychosis". She would probably be sent to a mental institution for awhile, but eventually would just pretend (or maybe even start to believe; probably the best case scenario in a situation this extreme) that it hadn't actually happened.
Its funny in the first ending why she wouldnt just break the door with the pick axe in the same room with her
I know right! I thought she was going to do that.
Probably wasn’t in the right mindset seeing her friends die, so just gave up instantly.
She was insane by that point, more-so afterwards. She probably broke the glass case open with her hands as well.
Bad Ending 1, Yao Bikuni is the most messed up ending in the game in my opinion
will she die though?
Don't know, she said she was "immortal" so maybe
Ai El
JLacay
Rin eating human flesh doused in a cocktail of germicide? I wonder...
Yao Bikuni is a real legend but it didn't goes like the game show us
Rin was already cracking under the deaths of her friends and everything happening, so she wasn't thinking clearly enough to use the pickaxe on the door and even if she did realise the pickaxe was on the door, she would have been to hungry to even drag herself through the tunnel and climb a ladder so.... food comes first... and then she completely lost it :3

It wasn’t an actual mermaid, so yeah she probably died too

Maybe I will. Thank you!
what, or who, is lupine the third?
Lupin the third is the greatest thief the world has ever seen
Yao Bikuni:
First thought: She wasn't crazy, she was just hungry, I would have done the same.
Last thought: OK, she's fucking nuts.
Pretty much my same thoughts as well... xD
Kaede Akamatsu I was thinking to myself this is all ur fault old man u mad her crazy YOU were the crazy one in the first place old man
Aeris
A-Aeris Gainsborough (From Final Fantasy VII) I-Is that you?
hi aeris
I thought she was driven crazy from being in solitude for so long + being unable to die.
You don't need to light the fire in Yuka's room. If you do you're locked into various bad endings.
Has anyone noticed that when one of the friends is possessed by the curse, their eyes are not visible and replaced by a shadow that covers the top half of their face...?
yeah
Damn, the only one I was able to get was getting drowned in the bathtub. Worst one ever
There's no statute of limitations on murder... but you did just destroy the crime scene which had all the evidence, so there wouldn't be much the police could do.
which murder?
+James Harvey I now believe it was the underground chamber one, but she also took that knife from the suicide, which was kinda confusing me
also I'm assuming the limitations thing prevented punishments, but what exactly is it?
Not in the USA but in Japan the statue of limitations for a murder used to be 20 years
They did get rid of that pretty recently though
i hate it when the "mermaid face" appeared randomly...damn scary Q_Q
Same here ;_;
Me to but only when I look at the picture
It was the most creepiest, scariest and the ugliest thing I have ever seen
About the old man intervening, basically him killing or attempting to whoever remains.
I ship people too easily
#Rin and Seitaro
Same for me XD
***** It says that he's a student on his ID card s I'm assuming around 17-18.
I really wanted to see his "painting" like Rin got one even when she was crying we knew how she looked. Well we just know that Seitaro has a very beautyful hand...
death scenes: 00:10
Ending 1: 09:01
ending 2: 13:45
ending 3: 17:52
ending 4 (good ending): 23:20
plot, ending explanation: 41:09
I actuall think that Yao Bukini is quite a suited ending for a horror game...
Did anyone get the bad ending where Seitaro drowns Rei in the bathtub? What was up with that? Was he possessed or something?
Okay, thanks!!!
Yeah, that's what I got the first time I played. Back then I didn't know there were different endings, so I was sort of "wtf??"
But yeah... I'm pretty sure he was possessed.
Nice.
I ate the mermaid meat...
+Star Strike he might be possesed by the creepy male ancestors of the house. The ones who had a fetish for drowning women.

They're all combinations of who dies. Like everyone dying or just Yuka and Yuuta dying.
having seen the remake first, I was honestly convinced that whole time that Yuuta was legitimately batshit and that the reasoning behind his freakout was equally insane. Interesting to see that his motivations fell more along the lines of failure to protect Yuka than,,,, well,,,, wasted opportunity, let's just say.
Seitaro was possessed by the ghosts of the men of the household.
That's pretty cool. And the guys voice seems like he would be a narrator for the geographic channel.
I rewatched this series for merMay and I forgot that this is actually my favorite Uri game, but still think it's messed up that even in the "good ending" the old man doesn't get punished for being part of the problem.

It was the spirits of the females >> She probably possessed Yuka as she tried to get through to the protagonist and when the spirit left Yuka became well again.

Sorry. I saw swamp and just went from there to the logical conclusion.
Yaobikuni translated to English is "eight hundred kilometres" if anyone was curious. :)
Can't wait to watch this disaster in remastered HD with fully voiced lines
From the beginning but to make it a bit easier:

Ending 1, Yaobikuni: 00:09:01
Ending 2, Forever Deep: 00:13:45

I actually quite like your explanation of the myths and legends. I'm interested in them as well. Thank you so much for explaining.
Thank you for the awesome playthrough Manly.
There was quite the twist to the story.
To bad it wasnt a proper horror story, but .... ah well.
Secrets will forever sleep in secrecy...As it should be.
Wait...how did Seitaro managed to go to the entrance ladder without the lantern?Didn't Seitaro said to Rin that "You hold the lantern.Follow me."?How did he managed to go there..?

0:14 is this how you end up being too cold ?
Cause it's scary 0_0
Ugh...I can't look at that picture due to the disgust I have, heck I almost puked the first time I saw it!
So in the first end She turns insane and goes into the forest... Now we got a new horror story lol jk.
21:45 wow she really went nuts
btw I love how the credits were played with "Aquarium" as the music in the back
haha, yep. btw I believe the full name is carnival of the animals: aquarium
out of all the downloadable vg horror games, this one was the creepiest for me.
52k Subs!! You are growing Manly thanks for the vids my main c:
I really liked your explanation, it explained a lot of cultural references I wouldn't have gotten otherwise c: I hope you do more!
I think that old man shot Yuuta, as it says at the end; Beauty shall remain so... Secrets will forever sleep in secrecy. Yet the only person knew and possibly made the legend is the old man, and he liked "mermaids".
I got the underwater dream ending on my first try :D lol.. didn't have the patience to play it again for other endings :D
damn, why couldn't i get underwater dream? i got forever deep, the most depressing ending, imo.
Because you lit the fire
The old man.
I love how you explain the endings!
Big fan of the trivia segment, thanks for educating me on these matters!
Extremely increased lifespan or immortality. Japanese mermaids didn't get human features or beauty till Western influence so going by the old depictions it'd seem more like eating a half chimp tuna rather than weird semi human cannibalism.
Yao Bikuni 9:01
Forever Deep 13:48
Secrets 17:52
Underwater Dream 23:20
Oooh, I thought I understood most of what happened, but the analysis at the end really helped tie up the loose ends.
So...one crazy ending, one sad ending, one still sad ending, and one happy ending
The good ending made me shed a teardrop. :')
Thanks for explaining everything! Looking forward to more playthroughs.
What does Yaobikuni mean? :3
800(Years) Buddhist Priestess or Nun.
Wow... Thanks for the infomation-but seriously, Yandere much?!
+Alesso Waters how?
Literally translates to Eight Hundred Years.
H2o just add water in a nutshell. XD
I think Rin just went crazy, I thought at first she really was going to live forever. yea but then i found out the truth about the mermaids. I guess she just cannibalized and ran off into the woods
Who shot yuuta?
The old man
Ahhhhh!
I have only one BIG problem with the "Forever Deep" ending: Drowning is absolutely horrible. The body breathes on reflex, meaning you are litterally breathing in water, filling your lungs with it. Drowning victims NEVER die without pain. =(
yeah, but when goin crazy and becoming desperate you don't really think logically.
When she said meat I was like, dafuq..? Then I realized and I was like, Rin, Rin no, we are not cannibals, RIN NO STAHP IT
I got the underwater dream the first time I played, and I didn't want to play the game again to see the other endings.
Is there something you did wrong?
uri makes such good horror games!
You should be able to right click the exe file and check run as admin assuming you're on windows.
Dat Laugh on Yaobikuni though... O.O
I like ending Yao Bikuni the most. She goes crazy in the end.
Weird... When I played the game, I got no pictures. Like the shot of Rin crying and the "mermaid" in the tank... The only picture I seemed to get was when Yuka was swelled up... Plus, I didn't get a warning when I first started the game up. Like how in Paranoiac and TCM, in the beginning, there was a message that said "this game has frightening elements and pictures, viewer discretion advised" or something along those lines.
man, hearing your voice on this video reminded me a lot of bateman XDD
1st off, I'm SO GLAD Cory forgot to light the fireplace.
2nd, I'm SO GLAD he accidentally pressed Don't Doge.
CoryxKenshin could have actually gotten the "Secret" ending, if he'd pressed Doge.
He got the best ending. Or, at least the good ending. I liked the ending where Rin ate the "Mermaid". But my favorite ending is the "Secret" ending, where Yuuta gets shot, it's the most interesting to me.
OMG I hadn't thought about that! It makes perfect sense, you're awesome x3
Manly already said it before, but it's better to tell. The one who shot Yuuta in the Secrets ending was the old man. 43:00 See it.
