When Aqualung came out they said it was a concept album cause everyone was doing that it but it wasnt written as a concept album. So he said `you want a concept album? ok, heres one` then he wrote Thick as a Brick. Masterpiece!
@@MrAxman53 I love both of 'em! They're both Masterpieces to me! I saw them back in '95 on the Roots To Branches tour, with ELP opening the show! It was a phenomenal concert!
Dude, you rock. That took me back. I was just staring. Thanks for your hard work. Minstrel in the Gallery is probably the most unique opening riff ever. Appreciate how you analyze each note, that is the way to approach a guitar.
A brilliant Chordplay session David and thanks for highlighting those two albums - both absolute classics but Stand Up is special and was years ahead if its time.
If you ever do a part 2 with the capo stuff and the alternate tunings - count me in! Jethro Tull to me is like Steely Dan, nobody else sounds quite like them
Did Steely Dan ever say anything about Jethro Tull? Like being influenced by them? Cause I agree 100% nobody sounds like either of them. They are like the American-British counterparts to each other.
I always loved the sound of acoustic and electric parts together . . . maybe in part because I had 17 Tull albums by the time I was 17 while I was learning to play . . . keep the Tull coming !! Great lesson!!
Stand Up!! (my fav) first cut !!! i think “Yesterday’s a new day”..” ..but its an old day now..” yeah!! one of the coolest “odd” rhythmic bluesy jams!! Clive Bunker rules! thank you for these videos!!
Only got to see them once at the '97 RocknBlues biker festival in the UK. They came on at about 1am and the generator broke half way through the set. By the time they'd finished it was about 4am. Awesome place, a natural amphitheatre set in rolling hills. Somehow everyone stayed up and went back to their tents happy.
In high school in the 80's I discovered Jethro Tull and aqualung blew me away. The Thick as a brick made me look at acoustic guitar differently. Great lesson Dave!!!! Keep the great work Brother every lesson is better than the last 👍🎸🤘
Great job! The whole lesson all I could think about was 'The Adventures of Ford Fairlane' when Andrew Dice Clay says: "Julian Grendel thinks Jethro Tull is one of the beverly hillbillies!" 😆 🤣
Wow! Nice Dave! Martin has always been one of my influences! I got to see them back in '95, at Riverbend in Cincinnati. ELP opened the show. It was phenomenal! We rented a little bungalow up there, and partied our asses off after the show. Good times...good times! Edit: I just bought myself a Fender Player Strat HSS, off of Reverb a couple of days ago! I can't wait until it gets here!
My band is working on a Tull tribute band and the music is very complicated- check out To Cry You a Song 1978 Tampa with the keys- the bridge is so intricate! I love “being” Martin Barre
Hey what up man this is great. I have something to listen to at work and something to learn when I get home. Hey I was watching a old lesson from your channel. The one about stepping outside your comfort zone. There was this chromatic technique you did in that video over a Fm7 and Am7 you talked about playing through the chords. I hope you do another lesson a little more deeper in that subject. Anyways thanks 🙏 for the time and knowledge take care man
love Jethro Tull and those were some of my favourite Tull tracks. what about Tony T.S. McPhee from The Groundhogs ? 3744 James Road and Groundhog Blues some great guitar playing on the Split album.
Hello. People seem to forget that Jethro Tull had a guitarist before Martin. His name is Mike Abrams and he played on the very first JT album - 'This was'. Very good guitarist, often compared to Clapton There is a blues cut on the album titled 'It's breaking me up' with very interesting guitar. It can be argued that he 'set the tone' for the guitar sound of JT.
And where was Mike Abrahams after JT? His band Bloodwyn Pig faded out after 2-3 albums that didn’t do too well commercially. JT is revered because it has been quite successful both commercially and artistically. When JT went electronic in 80s, it met with huge critical and commercial disdain
Wishone Ash, I think, is worthy of analysis, unusually, twin lead guitarists, Ted Turner ( in their earlier days ), and Andy Powell - Argus is a classic LP
Thank you as always Can you PLEASE do a Chordplay or Lick video on Larry Mitchell. His self titled album is truly and even criminally underrated. Thank you.
I'm just finding you on youtube. Just watched your "Chords of King's X" my second favorite band behind Queen. Great video. I was wondering if you've heard of MOKE and the songs, "Another Weekend", "Down" and "Wheels in Motion"? I got this free cassette in the mail years ago and it was Moke's Superdrag album and I'm been a fan ever since. Could you check them out if you haven't? THX!
When Aqualung came out they said it was a concept album cause everyone was doing that it but it wasnt written as a concept album. So he said `you want a concept album? ok, heres one` then he wrote Thick as a Brick. Masterpiece!
And then followed up TaaB with Passion Play! Two concept albums in a row! Brilliant composer/songwriter.
@@MrAxman53 I love both of 'em! They're both Masterpieces to me! I saw them back in '95 on the Roots To Branches tour, with ELP opening the show! It was a phenomenal concert!
That's the only time I've ever seen anyone do that little electric embellishment on We Used to Know. Too cool. Thanks.

Ian anderson is a great song writer. My old guitar teacher knew his ex manager and met him, but he said he was lacking in friendliness.

Excellent - Aqualung has long been one of my all time favourite albums.
Tull can only be loved 😀
Very special!
Stand up was the first album I ever bought!
More Please!
Thank you Dave. I know I was one of the people who asked for a full lesson
Thanks, Dave - great lesson! "My God" is such an intense song, musically and lyrically.
I always loved the sound of acoustic and electric parts together . . . maybe in part because I had 17 Tull albums by the time I was 17 while I was learning to play . . . keep the Tull coming !! Great lesson!!
Shabby Road, lol...amazing I have never thought of that, hahahahhaa...anyway, I loved those first 5 Tull albums
This is fantastic, as are all of your videos and those are my 2 favourite albums by Jethro Tull as well! Thanks for sharing this! Cheers! 🤘
Great job--I forgot how good they were great in concert for sure thanks for the memory

Great thanks Dave. Big fan of Saxon when you get chance. Best Andy.
Fantastic! I really enjoyed this Chordplay lesson.
Great lessons!
Thank you
🙏
Listened to a lot of Tull in the late 70s in high school.
Just watched tull live in Iceland on amazon. Thick as a brick part one and two with florian opahle on lead guitar. Excellent concert.
Great job! The whole lesson all I could think about was 'The Adventures of Ford Fairlane' when Andrew Dice Clay says: "Julian Grendel thinks Jethro Tull is one of the beverly hillbillies!" 😆 🤣
Thanks David. I love it when you go all prog rock!
Great stuff. IIRC, Ian Anderson played the rhythm electric guitar on the studio recording of Locomotive Breath.

Nice flavors, man. Love to hear your take on more songs from Stand Up and Benefit.
Bought Aqualung .. when I was 10... great album
Great stuff! Thank you.
An excellent insight into a unique band. Thank you. There must be at least another sequel to this.
love your work David! Don Felder may have loved We Used To Know too...😉
Nice!

Love it
Aqualung is still one of my favorite albums to jam out.....
love Jethro Tull and those were some of my favourite Tull tracks. what about Tony T.S. McPhee from The Groundhogs ? 3744 James Road and Groundhog Blues some great guitar playing on the Split album.
That Breedlove sounded perfect
Without a doubt Jethro Tull is one of the greatest bands this world has ever seen. Second only to BABYMETAL. Thank you David.

We need a Blodwyn Pig lesson now
@@deathmaybeyoursantaclaus Yes!
@@deathmaybeyoursantaclaus Great nod to the Reverend JM Gates! But, is the rope around your neck?
It’s Abrahams isn’t it?

Sorry to misspell the name it's not Mike Abrams but Mick Abrahams.
Wishone Ash, I think, is worthy of analysis, unusually, twin lead guitarists, Ted Turner ( in their earlier days ), and Andy Powell - Argus is a classic LP
Agreed
Ian except from being an excellent flute player, frontman and song writer was also an fantastic acoustic guitar player!!!
Why aren't they in the R&R HOF?
Steve Howe and Yes - Howe did a lot of cool stuff
Great band? The best!
how about a lesson on ween a very underated band and guitarist ?
Thank you as always

PEOPLE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
🍺’ski is there no tone you can’t duplicate? Stop saying something like that it’s always exactly like that!👍
Blackberry Smoke is a guitar kinda eye candy band take a check might be worthy
It's pronounced Bar-A.......at last according to Ian!
You are a master of the guitar, David!!! How about Mark Tremonti or Alter Bridge for an episode?
Hotel California was an absolute rip off of we used to know. The Eagles are human garbage.
