I've not changed out a hard-wired smoke detector before and went online to find instruction. I watched several videos but this one was the best by far. It showed and explained each step of the process and kept it simple for a novice like me. THANK YOU.
Hi Bruce, this type of smoke/Co alarm normally run off the household electrical supply, in the event of a power supply failure the battery acts as a backup power supply until the mains electrical supply is restored and normal operation resumes. In other words, the only time the battery is used is in the event of a mains failure, but the unit will monitor the battery condition to ensure it is okay.
I believe you are correct! I haven't review the video since reading your comment but I'm thinking I must have stated the opposite in the video. Thanks for the correction if that's the case, I appreciate your input!
Do you have to turn off the circuit breaker if switching out one First Alert with another? The hardwire is the same and in the white little tab. It seems one could pull out the tab and insert into the new First Alert device.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Thanks man! This was a great video easy to see and hear and great advice! 5 stars 🌟 Thanks for the quick response 👍 I'll subscribe to your channel!!
Hey, so when I changed the smoke detector, test was done but it still beeped as if the battery was low. Then I googled and found that i need to remove battery for new detector and then press test button for 15 seconds to drain out any charge. Then I put in battery reconnected and then it did not beep again. The only difference is I see a steady green light in the smoke detector now, Is that okay ?
Issue I'm running into is as soon as I close the battery slot on the new smoke detector it goes off. I tried to let it run until the alarm went off but never did. Gonna go back through and make sure the wiring for all of them are fine then hopefully reattach them soon. Hoping it was just a wiring mistake on my end. If y'all got any advice lmk.
I thought that was the whole point of having wired/interconnected alarms: when one goes off, it triggers all the others as well. And since any new/replacement until will go off once you install it, it makes sense that the new unit will trigger all the other units as well. Or am I missing something??
It's because after they are installed something with the circuit breaker needs to be done. I watched someone do it and it solved my problems. I am watching videos trying to figure out what they did, but I guess this is not the video!
I don't thank many people want to touch the circuit breaker. Many of use are totally not mechanical. We don't know which button to push and are too afraid to push the wrong button.
My problem is my hard wired one looks completely different it's old, I just bought this house and wanted to remove it to replace it with a battery one I already bought. One wire is already out of it the other is stuck in there and don't know how to remove it
Wow, all these videos show smoke detectors where you can just unscrew or unlock the detector from the baseplate. Can't do that weith mine, so this video is worthless to me.

I was very annoyed by my smoke detectors while cooking. You saved my ears from today. Thank you very much.
Excellent!
Very helpful video thank you

Do i need to turn the circuit breaker off before unplugging? Trying to not get electricuted 😅
Yes you should IMO
Thanks this is very detailed and helpful!

So I only have 2 wires in the ceiling. And I dont have other smoke alarms so I'm assuming that I just cap off the orange wire and dont use it correct?
Correct

Awesome video, thanks! Do I need to shut off the circuit breaker?
Yes you should
If I am replacing with the same model as I'm taking off I do not need to change the base plate right
Most likely that’s correct unless they changed the design on the newest version.
The plastic ages and yellows. Do yourself a favor and change them. It’s two screws holding the plate.
Thank you. All six alarms went off today. I returned home to unhappy pets. And a missing cat. This explains it very well. Thank you.
How much voltage the black and white wires are suppose to be connected to? Thanks
120v

Sounds like it’s ok. What do the instructions say about the green light?
If it keeps beeping saying there is a fire, do I have to change the battery? What type of battery do I need?
There should be a section in the manual or on the back of the detector explaining the different beeps and what they mean. Mine use a 9 volt battery.
Thanks!
You bet!

I have the same issue with my new smoke detector. It goes off as soon as I close the battery slot. Any advice?
I hooked up my new one, and it immediately started going off and set off all the other ones in the house. Any idea what the issue is?
I don't know what that means unless one is not hooked up right maybe?
I have the same problem. I reached out to the manufacturer but haven’t heard back, which is why I’m here….
I'm having the same problem.

I have to replace 9 of these and i"m not happy about it. good video though.

Your hand covered the part where you plugged the smoke detector into the wires.
it was from 2014 so you got full life out of the old one
That is correct 👍🏻
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Yeah usually 10 years but i had the same alarms and they lasted 8 years
Takes way too long to listen to this. I need a 1 minute fix.
It's life saving info. Maybe you should hire someone.
