2:56 Europe is the wealthiest continent? Asia is the wealthiest continent. China alone is richer than the entire EU zone. China 32 trillion vs EU 25 trillion. ($ GDP PPP)
After reading multiple comments from fellow Moldovans, I want to add something to this excellent video. One huge aspect that could have been covered a little more in the video is the fact that a very large portion of children in Moldova grow up with only 1 or NO parents. They do have parents, that love them, but to provide for their children, they go to work in Europe, Russia, Israel in order to make money and send most of it back home (that's why you might see kids in villages with iphones). You can ask any Moldovan under 25 years old and 90% of them will tell you that at least 1 of their parents at least once went to work in another country to support them. What happens is either the mother or father have to go find work in another country because the local salaries are just too low to support a family, even with both parents working (mind you, this mostly applies to rural Moldova). In the case that both parents have to leave, the children usually live with grandparents. The issue becomes more apparent later in the following ways. Children lose emotional connection with their parent(s) and it really affects a child's psyche from an early age. The parent that stays back home, for various reasons, may start being disloyal to their husband/wife which leads to even more problems (rare obviously but not impossible). Depression leads to alcohol abuse. Etc. And to add to that, the type of work that these poor parents usually do is manual construction labour for men, and either house cleaning or elderly care for women.
Another insightful comment. Glad that I discovered this video tonight, and the comment section is as interesting as the video itself. How do you see Moldova in the mid term future?
Well, i was a happy kid then. Had both my parents staying in the country while having decent income. But yeah, almost all friends of my age had at least 1 parent working abroad
@@sarantis1995 The scars that were left by the communist regime on the population are still present and will have a pretty strong effect for at least another 10-15 years. Moldova wants to join the EU and that might be helpful for the country, specifically from an economic/trade perspective. But there's also the fact that thousands of people are leaving Moldova every day to move to other places, and a lot of them are educated people that see better opportunities elsewhere. Moldova is bleeding talent. For Moldova to get back on track, I think the government will need to invest heavily into education and create a entrepreneurial culture for young people to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and keep people in the country, or there will be some sort of wave where hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who left will come back and invest in the country. Or both. Thing is, both things are already happening on a small scale. But the bottleneck is the Judicial System which is corrupt and unstable.
I've been to Moldova several times myself and Transnistria as well, you can see some actual recent footage I took in those countries on my channel. I would say opinions on Moldova are a little exaggerated, when you go there yourself you can see a lot of teenagers that are well dressed, people go out, restaurants are always full at any time of the day. Of course you have poverty but it's less than it used to be.
I was born and still live in Moldova. I went to school and university in Moldova, and work (private sector) also here. After first or second wage (around ten years ago) - I don't remember being broke, or in debt. But I know that there are people with smaller salaries, but from my point of view - there is a continuous improvement of conditions. When I started school - in the winter it was pretty cold, and we were in classes in outerwear, when I finished school - we had heating, most of the windows if not all were replaced, desks and chairs were replaced, roof was replaced, we even had new informatics laboratory with decent PCs. Now, that school is even better, with bathrooms inside, with equipment to learn languages, courses on robotics and so on. And this is a public school in a village, not some fancy private school in the city. When I went to university - there were only few repaired classrooms, most of them were last repaired during soviet era, it was also stupid cold in the winter, some desks were so old, that they were full of inscriptions, also some as old as soviet union, sockets were missing or broken, floors were also so old that only in the corners were some traces of paint. When I finished university - already most of the classrooms were renovated, corridors were also renovated, now there are places to sit, to charge laptop, everything is lit up and there are no hanging wires... And now is even better. Public transportation - when I fist time visited capital - there were only soviet era trolleys and busses, and also a lot of micro buses (which only later I learnt that they were not even supposed to transport passengers). Now soviet era trolleybus is seldom, albeit present, but most of them are modern, with heating pumps and some even have air conditioning. And they are more comfortable, with floor level approximately the same as the pavement, while in the old ones - you had to climb few stairs, which is ok for healthy people, but if you have mobility issues or have a baby carrier - it was hard. And I could leave Moldova, I visited several countries, but I still believe in my country
Wow! It's great to read this. I'm glad that there's progress and investment in education. I hope corruption will also decrease, and the private sector can truly thrive as a result. It's important to find a way to keep talented, educated young people from leaving the country, but with a corrupt government, it's not going to be easy. I'm Hungarian, and in our country, in my opinion, the quality of education and corruption are the biggest problems. However, unlike you, we have seen gradual deterioration rather than progress in these areas in recent times...
I am very happy to hear that you're country is changing so much. It really comes down to the government I think. If a government is very corrupt, then it doesn't stand a chance, honest leaders who work for the people can change the lives of millions for the better. Looking forward to seeing your country join the EU in time, from your friends in Ireland.

Said she remembers it since it was the village next to where she grew up and there were young adults, like 20 year olds who did that as a way to get money, that was happening at the beginning of 2000. I also remember the shock everybody went through when the billion just disappeared, l'm somehow surprised a lot of people just got over it and the man who did that, even now has its string over our political situation. I really like your video and I do appreciate your effort doing your research and structuring the information this way to rise the awareness about Moldova. Thank you!

Well, the Soviets left us, Eastern Europeans, without anything. But at least they are gone. Now, after they left, we needed to figure out what to do next, some countries did better, some did worse. For example, my country, Czechia, revived from this relatively fast, being now the richest country which was under the Soviet influence, but not directly under the Soviet Union. But you can still unfortunately see signs of communism here, and after revolution, we've had also some bad times, including the privatization in 1990's. Still not the best politics, but when I look at Slovakia, I'm glad that we have pro-democratic and pro-european government. Czechs also really hate Russians 😀 So don't know how is it in Moldova but we would kick the heck out of Russians. We still see the Russian influence in Moldova, unfortunately. Wishing your country only the best and looking forward to be our ally in European Union, when the corruption and all the stuff is solved.
Important to note: ALOT of Moldovians nowdays expecially have started to feel closer to Romania than Moldova. The corrupt governments failed the people. I think this union is just a matter of time.
I'm a history student at the University of Bucharest. I have a few classmates who are Moldovan Monarchists. I feel like in the long-term, this educated class will come to lead the country, and lead it back into prosperity in Romania's arms. Reunion is definitely happening within the next 10 years, and that's an unstoppable fact.

As a young moldovan who left the country with its family to pursue a better life, I really appreciate this video as it put into perspective the life I lived as a child, when I didn't understand why we were so poor in comparison to others. @@EvanMadjar-q6yPoland's situation wasn't as bad as it was widespread. The whole country had to be rebuilt at once, essentially from the ground up after the Russian influence.
Its incredibile how detailed and on point the majority of this video is, but its too bad that you omitted the last 5 years of Moldovas history, which are the most important, we finally have elected non corrupt and well intended government and the incredible president Maia Sandu, which are in a very tough battle with the absolutely rotten and corrupt sistems of the country, while facing crisis after crisis.
Ati facut foarte bine si sper sa o alegeti si in Noiembrie pe Maia Sandu si pe fortele politice care o sustin. Sper sa ne vedem reuniti in UE cat mai curand! Succes!
He intentionally omitted the last 5 years, during which the country surpassed Ukraine's, Georgia's, Armenia's and even Russia's GDP per capita. Basically, right from the title of the video you get a big, blatant lie, since Moldova is actually not the poorest economy on the European continent. Far from the truth. Why not make a video on those other countries? But with such a detailed video, it is obvious the author is aware Moldova isn't the poorest economy. 95% of the video's content is basically Moldova's history until the present day. But you don't get clicks and views by titling the video "Moldova's history". You have to omit Moldova's economic progress in the last 5 years, its EU accession progress, etc, and then regurgitate the lazy belief that baldandbankrupt established in his video: Moldova is the poorest in Europe. In short: he did it for the clicks. He doesn't care about Moldova's progress. If he mentions that, then there's no video at all and he cannot title the video like he did. We have to keep this trope alive, so that youtube creators can continune to make videos about Moldova.
This video should be called "modern history of moldova". It is a very good portrayal on a surface level of what shaped modern-day moldavian politics and culture.

I am from Moldova and I can confirm this info is quite accurate. Like someone who used to closely follow the politics in Moldova (roughly til mid-end 2021), I can tell you the reasons are complex and intermingled, but the baseline is the redneck and corrupt elite which will not allow Moldova heading anywhere not EU and NATO, nor Russia. Both pro-EU and pro-Russia parties only claim they are “pro” but in fact most of the elites sponsoring those would rather fight a war for Moldova remaining totally inert so they can do whatever they please in realm that belongs to them and them only. Fun fact: many Russian economic entities know about that and endorse that because they got their own economic interest that doesn’t always coincide with Russia’s strategic interest.
In the shadow of the carcass of USSR and their successor state, Moldova cannot be allowed self determination. What Moldovans saw in Romanian TV was that exact same thing. When their neighbors to the north broke through their disinformation clouds and have seen clearly their self intertest (resulting in Maidan and a clear political breakup from moscaw), russia invaded and is still invading that country. Tough choice to make, yet not as harsh as other moments in our history. People today seem smaller, by comparison. Those 70 years of forced communism have left deep marks, and deeper still the 150 years prior that. As Romanian, I would not want to import more russian interests into our political arena, and unfortunately that is what plagues Moldova right now. Having cut the yoke away, in time, blood ties will tell and unification will come, if it comes, by popular acclaim. Long way off, at least 2 generations away, until the "old guard" dies off

The Soviets really messed up this region. Follow geography. Moldova should be the region between the two rivers, all the way to the Black Sea south of Odessa, with Transnistria being Ukraine. But they really wanted the republics destabilized, and make it as hard to break up as possible. And now, Moldova might as well unify with Romania. It's basically the same country and culture.
The Soviets didn't expect their Union to fall. Transnistria was given to Moldovan SSR because the Romanians there actually had an ASSR before Bessarabia was taken by USSR. It's just that over time the demographics changed but not the borders, as there was little incentive to do so, since, as I said, they didn't expect their own collapse. I think Budjak was given to Ukraine SSR as some sort of compensation, the area is quite diverse ethnically - there are Bulgars living between today's Moldova and Izmail for instance. While for Transnistria, Romanians settled right on the bank of the river. But if Budjak had been part of Moldova today, it would have suffered the same issues as Transnistria: a declaration of Autonomy, Independence, war in the 90s and a Russian base there.
Not entirely unlike the ridiculous borders drawn up between Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. At least the British preferred straight lines when messing places up.
The borders were designed for when they were Soviet republics not independent nations which is a big part of it. Like if the usa broke up into its different states a lot of the borders would be horrendous for countries to govern
Been to Moldova in 2016. Most outstanding was the lack of younger people between 18 and 30. They have left the country to work somewhere else. The children of these younger people stay in Moldova with the grandparents.

Most importantly Moldova became a EU candidate and is quickly addressing the points necessary to start negotiations. The current government is the best Moldova has had.
There was a guy from Moldova in my degree course, his ancestors on his mother's and father's side were German and so they had the simplified option of immigrating to Germany after the collapse of the USSR. They did so because the entire state collapsed and they no longer had any prospects. He showed us pictures of Moldova and told us about the beauty of the country, but also how the family was starving and freezing, and how the grandfather died of simple bronchitis because the health system had collapsed and they couldn't find any antibiotics, let alone pay for them. We studied together 10 years ago, when the situation in Moldova was of course much better and his parents lived there again for several months a year as pensioners, I would love to visit the country after getting to know so many beautiful things about the country and its people! It is a pity that the Transnistrian conflict, among other things, continues to paralyze the economy.
Yeah, the 90s were brutal in all post-soviet countries. Everyone likes to talk about independence and freedom, but all those abstract things don't matter when people have nothing to feed their children with.
When I saw the title, I knew exactly what country this was talking about. Unfortunately, these types of short documentaries about Moldova always fail to mention Moldova's greatest resource: its people.
When I was in Romania earlier this year the Romanians raved about Moldovan wine being the best in the region and having an excellent and underrared wine industry that isn't exported much to the US. Regarding Voronin - Putin failed deal to "solve transdiniestrian issue" - the protests were not in vacuum, and even if Voronin became pretty unpopular in the following years - he is still praised to refusal to sign that deal with Putin. Because what that plan supposed - was a kind of federalization of this tiny country, with transdniestrians getting "Veto" right, gagauz also, and it would be a very "fair" split of power, one third - to around 300k people on the left bank of Dniester, one third - to around 100k of gagauz, and one third to remaining cca 2mln citizens... and both transdniestria and gagauzia being to this day very loyal to kremlin, that plan to "settle down the conflict" would mean "give up the *whole* country to direct russian control"

As a young Moldovan 🇲🇩 I can say that the summary about Bessarabia’s history was excellent. Now about the situation in my country - After gaining independence we have been plagued by corruption, incompetent politicians and weak rule of law. Another problem is also that many people have a socialist mindset developed during the Soviet times - wanting the government to do everything and everyone to be economically (almost) equal. But currently we have a pro-Western government and we are moving towards the EU, 🇪🇺 so hopefully the economy will improve in the future. I personally would prefer re-uniting with Romania 🇷🇴 (as Romania is much more developed than us), but many people are still brainwashed by Soviet propaganda into believing that we are a separate ethnic group. TLDR: Moldova has been a Russian / Soviet colony since 1812, with a brief break between 1918 - 1940 and 1941-1944. It was exploited by the communists as a colony and sucked dry of everything they could extract from it. After the fall of the USSR, in 1991, they tried to dismember it (Transnistrian war of 1992) and then the "country" was left prey to the former communist party members, now turned business men. The results are not hard to see.

That would be indicative of the other commenters here noting Moldova's improvement. I hope it lasts!
The video is very accurate but also very pessimistic. Now Moldova lost economic ties with Russia and all exports goes to EU. Also it is having express reforms for integration with EU. EU integration is attracting investments and is rising economy.
It is true that Moldova is the poorest in Europe. But on the other hand, if you look at what people wear, what car they drive, in what houses they live. You realise how rich actually Europe Continent is if its poorer country looks that posh.

Not just for the Romanians. EVERY single people east of Germany had to suffer Russian aggression in all iterations of this state. NOBODY loves the Russians in Europe except for Serbs.
Moldova should just join Romania. They are both extremely similar, if not the same, culturally. Moldova could also benefit from it economically and military, as Romania is a member of both EU and NATO.
The Moldovan population's minds have been poisoned for decades. Besides the similarities, there is a resent of Romania that is very palpable. Every since independence, they waited for someone to save them. Either Russia or Romania/Europe. You can constantly hear "What has Romania done for us?", despite the amount of aid Romania has sent over to Moldova throughout the years. It is hidden because the media is controlled by people with Russian affinities. Unification would bring Romania a lot of unwanted problems that it cannot deal with. That would outweigh the benefits of population/land increase in the minds of the people.
The real surprising thing is that Moldova's quality of life is still better than most of the world. I think it just has a spotlight shown on it because it is so close to the EU where so many countries are rich and it also reports it's statistics on such things a lot more honestly than many other countries.
People saying how Moldovan possible unification with Romania will affect the EU in such a way that EU will oppose it totally seem to forget that EI has welcomed the entirety of Moldovan population in immigrants and refugees over the last 10 years, without them being bringing in any land, agricultural potential, industry, real estate, (or willingness to sell their organs 😅)
Great video, Romania and Moldova is getting closer and closer from state and private companie initiatives. Romania is helping Moldova in energy sector. If an coruption incident is happening Moldovian must act ASAP to keep the good path that is sailing.
actually it would not be as high as many would think. Moldova developed quite well in the past few years, and a lot of the interconnecting infrastructure is already budgeted and being built. the cost was estimated at 10 billion euros a few years ago and right now, it's likely lower. 10 billion is about the same amount as the deficit of Romania in 2023.

4:43 incorrect info - they justified it by a “reunification” of Bessarabia with soviet controlled part of “MOLDOVIAN nation” - a Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (modern territory of unrecognised “transnistria” mostly) , Established 12 October 1924 on territory and under administration of puppet-Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. According to 1926 census, MASSR had mixed population: 48.5% of Ukrainians and 30.1% of Romanians (Moldavians in soviet interpretation).
The Soviet Union "justified" the invazion and annexation of Bassarabia in 1940 by LYING that the majority population is ukrainian when it fact it was 80% romanian.
That's retarded, how do you imagine that "grip"? If they join EU, what Russia can do? It's just classic propaganda maneuver, EU don't want to take in another shithole, but it's Russia to blame.

Every time I look at Moldova on the map, I can’t get over what a weird shape that country is and think that it should genuinely be part of Romania. Am I weird? I can’t put my finger on why I feel this way. There are far stranger country shapes in the world, yet Moldova’s borders and its placement in Europe just bug me for some reason.
You're not weird, and looking at a map and saying a country just "looks" like it should belong to another country is a thing many people do. That's not to say that's not an invalid position to take. What decides the Moldovan borders are more or less arbitrary than the borders of Germany, or straight line borders, or any other border? They are all arbitrary, and they stay fixed because that way minimizes conflict, not because of any form of naturalness.
Because it is half of the historical region of moldova (moldavia). Soviets cut off bassarabia and part of northern bukovina and then cut it again and gave the southern part of bassarabia to ukraine. Majority of the historical region of moldova (moldavia) is in Romania.

Far worse now than earlier. That's a sentiment of everyone I've spoken with of elderly who actually saw USSR. And all statistics show the same, deindustrialization qas quite rough.
Moldova used to be fully funded by the USSR. After the collapse of the USSR, the Soviet funding stopped and so also Moldova collapsed. And this is the main reason for the current situation of Moldova. Nearly everything in Moldova as in infrastructure, hotels, experts, scientists and farming equiptment was built by the USSR or imported from other Soviet Republics.

But with such a detailed video, it is obvious the author is aware Moldova isn't the poorest economy. 95% of the video's content is basically Moldova's history until the present day.
In your experience what do most of the "average" Moldovans believe? Most are pro nato or Russia? 50/50?
Long way off, at least 2 generations away, until the "old guard" dies off
@@ShrekMeBemy fear is the “old guard” will never die in Romania. See latest AUR developments and you’ll get my point. They are here to stay, unfortunately. And with them so will China - Russia interests.

It is also important to note that the Soviets purposefully took the Danube and Black Sea access from Moldova (and gave it to Ukraine) which makes us somewhat geopolitically isolated.

My Mom grew up in Moldova. Moldova was part of the Soviet Union. My Mom was harassed as she is a Jew. But she moved to America and became a nurse and is great with computers. It’s like they say-the greatest revenge is success.
She was a Jew so they understandably probably thought she was rich and part of the political elite.

Russian grip on Moldava didn’t allow it to move to EU. Wish this country recover and grow economically.
That's retarded, how do you imagine that "grip"? If they join EU, what Russia can do? It's just classic propaganda maneuver, EU don't want to take in another shithole, but it's Russia to blame.

As Romanian, I only hope that Moldova will reunite with Romania and prosper together.
The story of post-Soviet Union Moldova sadly sounds very similar to Bulgaria’s, especially the wide spread corruption that now seems 100% incurable 😞
It would look a lot weirder on a map if they joined Romania.
@@domca4617 how so?
Romania's shape on the map looks like a piranha, and Moldova kind of looks like a parasitic xenomorph attached to it.
Because it is half of the historical region of moldova (moldavia). Soviets cut off bassarabia and part of northern bukovina and then cut it again and gave the southern part of bassarabia to ukraine.
Majority of the historical region of moldova (moldavia) is in Romania.
Without trying to be offensive or anything, as someone who has never been to Moldova or met a Moldovan person, I would like to know what do regular Moldovans think about the situation now, compared to when they were a part of the USSR?
Much better, without a doubt. The 30 years transition was really rough but his video is not that accurate. It's not covering the last several years since the power changed and we managed to finally elect someone worthy. For example, i do not know any person who sold their kidney, nor did i heard it on the news.
@@whalien5286 Glad to hear you are doing better! Thanks for the explanation! I'm from Montenegro, and we have had a terrible transition period of our own after the fall of Yugoslavia, but are doing a bit better last couple of years as well!
Far worse now than earlier. That's a sentiment of everyone I've spoken with of elderly who actually saw USSR. And all statistics show the same, deindustrialization qas quite rough.
Thanks!

You really overestimate just how much support we got from the Soviet government, if they were building up our country we wouldn't have rebelled
@@dioniscaraus6124 No, I don't overestimate anything. You were rebelling because you had mindless nationalism imposed on you and were made to believe that if you suddently break free of the USSR (which I admit was not in the best situation in 1991 but Moldova had it by far better), everything would be better. The opposite turned out: war, mass poverty and mass immigration out of the country were the result. Moldova has no future as an independent country, it will probably be fully absorbed into Romania.

Romania helps Moldova restore it's national identity, something that russia has stolen. We help them by trade and education, like civilised people, not by war and invasion like you know who.
Mind your own business, because Moldova minds its own. And Romania is there for Moldova.
Edit: nationalism in Moldova was Romanian nationalism. Which was heavily repressed in Soviet Union, so you have no ideea what you're talking about. But after independence all was fine until somebody brought the war in Moldova. Guess who? Yes, it was the russians.
