Man you are the one Iam looking for, what an explanation when I see cameras Iam searching different models release date and spec, pros and cons but you are doing this in one video very simple manner 👏👏
bought second hand a6300 from 462 dollars. ($998.00 for the first hand with 16-50mm lens) it's awesome loving it and I am taking all my professional projects with it!!! loving the every investment in it :D
Jason, There is a hidden feature/bug in the a6400 no one seems to be talking about. In Animal eye af mode +af-c +af wide, if you put your eye to the EVF you can then use your thumb on the touch screen to instantly and temporary move a small/medium flexi spot (and center button to go back to wide). Only in Animal mode, not Human. I love this "bug/feature" for stills and wish it worked in Human mode too.
I got the a6600 and I love it the video quality, battery life and features are exactly what I needed as a secondary camera to my A7III. I made a video testing the camera quality and it performed really well especially for an APS-C camera.
Honestly man a great video and some fantastic advice. I have the Sony a6400 and I love it. It’s great for TH-cam it’s great for photography and project work but above all its a pleasure to use.😊
If you‘re watching this video in 2022, be aware that the a6300 has continuous eye AF but you have to put this function on a button of your choice and that this one must be pushed all the time until you‘ve finished taking your pictures. I‘ve put it on the AEL-button which is a bit more comfortable than on other buttons but quite annoying when shooting stills for a longer period. I can‘t tell how it works on the other models of the a6xxx series but keep in mind that you‘ll ALWAYS need to push two buttons to keep the eye AF working. Nevertheless, face tracking alone (the larger square) is very effective too and does the job in most cases.
About to purchase the a6100! Going to go with the 2 kit lenses as I am just getting into photography and video. Your videos have been incredibly helpful!
Thanks Jason, your videos have helped me with recent purchases, including an A6400 a couple days ago!- awesome!- great videos and content, keep up the great work, cheers!
This video just confirmed, stick with my a6500..i do video at parties etc need ibis after a few drinks..for photos love setting memory 1....2...for my 2 genres at the moment..birds perched ,,,birds in flight.....70-350mm.lens..then manual for everything else.thanks Jason.
this might sound really stupid but i really recommend the smallrig L bracket for the a6400! It makes the grip so much more comfortable and also makes your body a bit heavier and bigger which feels better in the hand! Also people that don't know anything about photography link a big camera to good quality photos and a small one to amateurish work!
@@ChrisParayno the improved autofocus and microphone Jack are what tempt me. Thought about adding a Sigma 56 1.4, but I already have the 60 2.8 so I don't think that's worth it either. Maybe I can invest in some lighting, like a SL60 or another TT600 or maybe a modifier.
Bought the A6400 on Christmas and i'm very satisfyed with it's pciture quality, the redicolous fast AF and the Human and Animal Eye AF, Also the 4k looks so gooood... 🤤
Small thing, just to prevent confusion for someone. Larger sensors don't give you more bokeh. It's the distance from subject that does it. A crop is just a crop. It would be appropriate to say that full-frame cameras give you shallower DoF with the same lens if the size of the subject in the frame is the same as when shot with an APS-C camera. You have to be closer to the subject with the full-frame to get the same angle of view and being closer to subejct, longer focal lenght and larger aperture are the three main things that give shallower depth of field.
I own an a6000 and felt that I want an update for 4K. Instead of trading it in for an a6100, a6300 or a6400, I went ahead and bought an E-M10 III after I heard the new about Olympus. I bought the Oly for 4K, IBIS (a bonus over the Sony models I've mentioned), silence fully electronic shutter and its retro look. So I have 2 systems complementing each other.
Really enjoying your channel! Insightful and fun, easy to understand for beginners, while the pacing is not to slow for more advanced viewers. I recently purchased an a6600 for my channel (not yet used) with an 18 - 135mm & 55 - 210mm. Would love to see a review video of all your favorite APS-C lenses!
@@DyZapongofficial Why not? I am planing to buy a6400, how much can 1 battery last? I am thinking of battey grip because i would have 2 battery life in one go.
@@MightySuki Because it is going to be uncomfortable when you shoot with battery grip. Also extra battery is cheap you can buy 2 more if you want to shoot more than thousand photos a day. I just have 2 batteries and replace each other it so so easy.
I have really been struggling with making a decision on which APS-C camera I want to purchase. Until now, I have only shot stills on Nikon, and all video has been filmed on my iPhone X. I am getting into a little bit of Vlogging and some minor film making etc.and I wanted an entry-level camera that checked a lot of boxes. I have watched videos on the Canon line-up such as the M50 etc, but I think I am going with the a6400 based on your review, so thanks for helping me out with my decision. I always trust your advice and enjoy watching your videos. Peace!
I had a M50 then upgraded to the A6400 ... but took it back after 2 days for the A6600 w/Sigma 16mm ... then I picked up the Sony 50mm F1.4 OSS ... I think I'm set for my channel for a while.
Hi Jason! I am extremely interested in the dedicated APS-C lens buying guide. I’m thinking about buying the a6600 soon and would love to learn more about the lenses. Thanks!
Looking to get the a6400 as my first camera with the sigma 30mm 1.4 mainly for photography and music cover videos with my girlfriend. Excited to get it soon, just waiting for Black Friday just in case price goes down :)
I suggest the Sigma 16mm aswell .. I have both the 30mm and 16mm , but remember the 30mm will be on crop , while the 16mm is the wide angle for entire environment
Good points in this video about APS-C sensors. I didn't think about these points and have been looking for Full Frame cameras. For now I will be fine with APS-C and maybe one day I'll go to Full Frame camera. (:
Going to buy a Sony APS-C in a couple of days. 99% it's gonna be the 6400 (if for some miracle there'd be a massive sale on 6600 I might choose that, bu not likely :)), so now just trying to pull in as much info as I can. Don't wanna make some costly mistake :D A bit afraid of the lack of IBIS, I'm going to use it for 70-80% video, but most likely going to buy a Zhiyun Weebill S, and shoot on a gimbal, with OSS lens. I'm so pumped, can't wait, but a bit terrified, because at the end it'll be like 1800-2000$ which is not a small amount in my country :D Cool video, some interesting stuff, thanks Jason! It'd be cool to see a video about the lenses. My first idea was to buy the body and the 18-105 GMasters, but read really good things about the 18-135 kit lens, so I think I'll go with that, and later add some prime wider lens (heard good things about the 35mm). Not sure how much light do you use when shooting video (other than the blog), but some pointers about buying light source (what kind for certain photos/videos, what should we consider, etc) would be helpful too :) Thanks again, great channel
I did use an external microphone with my old a6000. It's a ECM-XYST1M that connects via hot shoe. To be honest, it's 2019, I have Sony A7III, my GF - a6300, we still are using this microphone to record audio: concerts, lectures, homevideos and so on. So the information about cameras without 3,5 mm input Jack is kinda misleading. I couldn't use external microphone and flip up screen at the same time (even if my models had one) because this mic stands at the top of the camera on the place of the flash. But works great.
I'm planning to buy this but I want to skip the kit lens and jump straight into the sigma 16mm or sigma 30mm. Not sure which one. Going to be taking pics of my newborn, recording every day Life. Which one to get?
That a6100 is looking real nice! 💪🏽 might say bump it and grab that ASAP! Thanks for the video. I’ve always wanted the a6300 but I’d rather stack a lil more to get 6100 and I’ll find it used.
I ordered a second hand a6k on Amazon yesterday, for just 250$, body only .. though it has only 1 month vari warranty. Am very excited right now, although extremely scared, that what I end up with a brocken camera .. Currently I'm in Japan so that one would be definitely Japanese settings too. Gotta find a good guidence to check a6k.
Thank u for this video and for the cool channel. My current problem is that I bought the a6300 for travel and discovered that I want to photograph more. My friends asked me to do event photography and now I have a problem with the noise in the photos. I don't actually have the money to update to full-frame but was wondering if there are some lenses/gear to help me with this issue. I currently have the Sony 16-55mm, 16-55g, 35mm, 55-210mm and a lot of Minolta analog lenses that I don't think I should use for events.
Hi sir jason! I am a big fan of your yt page! Humbly asking for your opinion. I’m confused what to buy between a6300 and a6400. I’m on a budget of 800USD and currently leaning on used a6300 with a prime lens rather than the a6400 with kit lens. Is it a good choice? Or would I opt for A6400 with kit lens and probably save for a nice prime? I will really appreciate your answer. God bless!
Hello Jason! Thanks for this great video! I am also a Sony user. In my case for b&w photography with voigtlander m prime lenses (using an adapter). My question to you is: would the ibis of the a6500 be a great plus on the a6500 to upgrade from the a6000? Or would it have a minor advantage? Hope to hear from you and keep up the good work!
Jason love the videos I plan on getting a Sony A6400 but would really like some help with what I want and all to get with it there are so many options.
Definitely made my decision. Got the Sony a6000 because of the price but a year later realized.... no external mic ! Still a good camera ! Definitely hard to make the jump from Nikon to Sony . You can check out my recent videos on my channel .. I shot it with the Sony a6000. :)
you know i really dont know why they took the flip up flash away from the a6600! they could have replaced it with a flip up directional mic like flypath suggested and I would of been totally ok with that! not a fan if using additional accessories when your'e in a tight situation where you just have to quickly take the camera out and shoot so for that reason the A6400 is my favourite out of the lot specially for its value! the battery life upgrade would have been worth it if the 6600 had the flash but i guess you have to sacrifice something for something else.. wish this wasn't the case
I have the 6500, I thought about up/downgrading to 6400/6600 but just going to stick with my 6500 it still very accurate and for photos it's nice to have that ibis, I have done up to half second handheld shots with my 6500 i am surprised you did not recommend the 18-105 F4 G it's around the same price as the 18-135 constant F4 and internal zooming
I've already got the A7iii and 6 G & GM lenses but I would like another camera body, not interested in video just stills. So am I right in saying the best choice would be the 6100 or 6400 ?
Jason, good you help me with a suggestion. I have a sony a6400 . I want to buy a new lens for potrait photography. I am confused in sigma 16mm, sigma 30mm and sigma 56mm. Which one will be better. I am a bit worried about the crop factor. Could you suggest me .?
Hi Jason, thanks for the vid. I was wondering, if I'm just using the camera to record and (maybe) livestream video in a home studio, which Sony camera would you recommend?
So im looking at getting the A6100 as im a beginner and am thinking of doing video/photos. Question for you is i saw that the price was almost 150-200 dollars cheaper Jan-Mar or something like that on amazon atleast. Unfortunately i didn't start looking until after this. Was wondering if you happen to know that these go on sale often? I don't know much about the camera market. Also i am keeping an eye on the used models as well.
I'm a wedding videographer and I bought the A6300 as my gimbal cam over the A6400 and the A6500. Why over the A6400? No mode dial C1 & C2. Menu system does not matter to me as I always pre-set my cameras before shooting, that is also why the mode dials that are missing is a big loss. As of the moment, I don't care now about the picture profiles, I found that the SOOC is fine enough for the type of shooting I do. I'd want the autofocus, but then again, I don't generally trust autofocus and find myself always checking the focus. Flip-up screens are for vloggers, I need a fully articulating screen. Why over the A6500? All I'm getting are the touch screen and the IBIS. I use a Panasonic cam as my main cam, and I never use the touch screen for shooting purposes, even in menus I don't use it. It's turned off right now in my cam. IBIS... isn't important to me. The cam will be for my gimbal, I turn off the IBIS or any IS when I have the cam on my gimbal. So, if I bought the A6500, I'll be using it as an A6300 basically.
Hello I have a Sony A5100 and I'm looking to upgrade I'm interested in food photography, cooking videos and taking Street views and outdoor videos, I would like a better mic , would you be able to suggest lens and another model camera if possible that I can use with a memory card ? Thank you
I’m still rocking an old NEX-6 but having occasional technical errors - “lens not attached” and sometimes out of focus. I’ve missed some shots having to reattach lenses. I’m thinking it might be time to upgrade to the a6600.

I don't shoot videos with my a6000, but if u switch off the view finder, it will not heat up.never had any issues
@@proteins327 thanks so much
Thanks you so much for this guide! You never cease to impress with Ur timing!
Thanks Jason, your videos have helped me with recent purchases, including an A6400 a couple days ago!- awesome!- great videos and content, keep up the great work, cheers!
Yes pls. Apsc lens buying guide.
Jason the a7r3 and A73 have audio input problems that dont allow you to put external microphones. I'm really surprised you haven't mention this.
You convinced me.. I'll spend my money on glass.. my A6000 is PLENTY fine :-)
Glass is an investment, not new bodies
@@ChrisParayno the improved autofocus and microphone Jack are what tempt me.
Thought about adding a Sigma 56 1.4, but I already have the 60 2.8 so I don't think that's worth it either.
Maybe I can invest in some lighting, like a SL60 or another TT600 or maybe a modifier.
I like that, You Can't Go Wrong With Jason Vong. Good one,
I bought a 6500 2 years ago with an 18-105 and have no intention of upgrading at this point.
Glad it’s still working great for you!! A6500 was my favorite camera!!
The really cool thing about APS-C is that you can buy the cheap anamorphic lenses that are aps-c sized like the Siruis and still use them in 4k.
The a6400 is THE BOMB!👍
Best Mirrorless Camera 2019?? I think so!
@@JasonVong a6400 and Fuji Xt30 too! both are GREAT values
Nice video Jason. Thinking of jumping from MFT to all Sony (APS-C and FF) and this was a really helpful overview of the APS-C options! Cheers!
A6400 + Gimbal + Extra Battery = King of Sony APSC camera.
Did you try battey grip for a6400?
@@MightySuki Not yet, and maybe not to.
Peace!
Currently using the a6000 for run and gun video/photo. Still on the fence about the either the a6400 or a6600 but this was a great help.
I had a M50 then upgraded to the A6400 ... but took it back after 2 days for the A6600 w/Sigma 16mm ... then I picked up the Sony 50mm F1.4 OSS ... I think I'm set for my channel for a while.
Congrats!
Very nice review for me!!!
18-105 F4 & 18-135 , which one will be the best choice for a6400?
Thanks.
18 105
Thanks bro!
I already got my 6400 with 18-105 F4 lens last Sunday.
Hi Jason! I am extremely interested in the dedicated APS-C lens buying guide. I’m thinking about buying the a6600 soon and would love to learn more about the lenses.
Thanks!
I needed this video, thank you! Do you think that with the 6100 having no color profiles for video would be a problem with color grading well?
Looking to get the a6400 as my first camera with the sigma 30mm 1.4 mainly for photography and music cover videos with my girlfriend. Excited to get it soon, just waiting for Black Friday just in case price goes down :)
One Minute Guitar I have that setup. It's amazing for portraits.
Awesome! I do have a a6400 setup guide if you ever need help setting it up! :)
@@JasonVong Already binged all your videos man haha!
Glad this video helped! :)
Great review Jason. Very comprehensive!
I would be super nice if you made dedicated APSC lens buying guide 💙😁
Going to buy a Sony APS-C in a couple of days. 99% it's gonna be the 6400 (if for some miracle there'd be a massive sale on 6600 I might choose that, bu not likely :)), so now just trying to pull in as much info as I can. Don't wanna make some costly mistake :D
A bit afraid of the lack of IBIS, I'm going to use it for 70-80% video, but most likely going to buy a Zhiyun Weebill S, and shoot on a gimbal, with OSS lens. I'm so pumped, can't wait, but a bit terrified, because at the end it'll be like 1800-2000$ which is not a small amount in my country :D
Cool video, some interesting stuff, thanks Jason!
It'd be cool to see a video about the lenses. My first idea was to buy the body and the 18-105 GMasters, but read really good things about the 18-135 kit lens, so I think I'll go with that, and later add some prime wider lens (heard good things about the 35mm).
Not sure how much light do you use when shooting video (other than the blog), but some pointers about buying light source (what kind for certain photos/videos, what should we consider, etc) would be helpful too :)
Thanks again, great channel
Please make a video about lenses for APSC! And definitely include FF lenses. If it’s worth it of course!
I would recommend Ape Case for a camera bag. I have three of them. And love all three. Good quality at an affordable price.
Have my eye on the Sony a6100 as my first ever beginner mirrorless camera 🤐🤐
Jason, you did a guide on full-frame lens, how about one for APS-C lens for Sony E-Mount? thanks!
I did use an external microphone with my old a6000. It's a ECM-XYST1M
that connects via hot shoe.
Awesome video as usual, Jason. Gotta love the a6XXX series. Do you plan to review the new 70-350 lens?
If @that1cameraguy wasn't so tired of TH-cam, this would have been a great topic for Monday Night Live.
😭😭😭 i miss Danny
Great vid! Please do an APS-C lens guide!!
I'm planning to buy this but I want to skip the kit lens and jump straight into the sigma 16mm or sigma 30mm. Not sure which one. Going to be taking pics of my newborn, recording every day Life. Which one to get?
I would say 16mm.
Guess I'll be doing an UnBoxing of the 6100 as I was torn between the 6100 vs M50 from Canon.
Man, this was a great guide thanks alot
That a6100 is looking real nice! 💪🏽 might say bump it and grab that ASAP! Thanks for the video. I’ve always wanted the a6300 but I’d rather stack a lil more to get 6100 and I’ll find it used.
I have to say.... I love the portability of the A5100..... wish they would make an update of that...
it's the only one I can take skiing and it in my pocket...
Great video. Need an update on this…
hei man . witch camera are yu using to shoot this video and lens at min 8:12 ?? thank you
Thank u for this video and for the cool channel.
Any of those can be portrait lenses tbh - if you’re unsure, the safe bet is 30mm.
@@JasonVong But is it true that the auto focusing of 30 mm is not upto the mark..?
Thanks for the video brother
2:55 a5100 has pop up flash.
What a5100 doesn't have is the hot shoe :)
Hi Jason, thanks for the vid. I was wondering, if I'm just using the camera to record and (maybe) livestream video in a home studio, which Sony camera would you recommend?
I shoot photos mostly and I don't think A6500 is any worse than A6400. With 16-55 ibis is a must have.
Thanks for this video, now it All makes sense..
Hello I have a Sony A5100 and I'm looking to upgrade I'm interested in food photography, cooking videos and taking Street views and outdoor videos, I would like a better mic , would you be able to suggest lens and another model camera if possible that I can use with a memory card ? Thank you
great video and info!! thanks alot
I’m still rocking an old NEX-6 but having occasional technical errors - “lens not attached” and sometimes out of focus. I’ve missed some shots having to reattach lenses. I’m thinking it might be time to upgrade to the a6600.
